Californium is a first-person PC adventure game set in the realities of science fiction, inspired by the biography of one of the most famous American science fiction writers, Philip K. Dick. The title was developed jointly by two French studios: Darjeeling and Nova Production in cooperation with the French-German TV station ARTE.
The fictional inspirations mentioned by the creators of Californium themselves include, among others Philip K. Dick's novels and short stories such as The Man in the High Castle, Through the Dark Mirror, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? And we will remind Mr. Hurtowo, on the basis of which the cult science fiction films - Android Hunter and Absolute Memory were made. The most important inspiration, however, was the biography of the writer, who during his career often struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, and even suspicions of insanity.
The plot of the game takes us to 1967, and we play the role of the unfortunate writer Elvin Green, who at the same time leaves Thea's wife and the current publisher Teddy, and the very completion of his debut novel turns out to be a real problem. When the psyche of our hero deteriorates strongly, he quickly falls into a self-propelling spiral of alcohol and drugs. With nothing to lose, the protagonist slowly rolls to the bottom, where, in a narcotic trance, he discovers a transition to an alternate reality called Theta. This event will forever change the hero's life and the way he perceives the surrounding reality.
While playing, we observe the action of the game from the eyes of our hero, and the gameplay mechanics do not differ much from the standards of adventure games, focusing on exploration and searching for items necessary for the proper development of the plot. The main distinguishing feature of Californium is the fact that in the course of the game we move to alternative realities, and the items found there are the key to solving the hero's problems in the real world. At the same time, all plots and clues in the game quite strongly refer to the biography of Philip K. Dick himself and the problems and obsessions that haunt him.
