The focus is not only on technical and artistic aspects; a large number of the entries also have a socio-critical and contemporary historical background. Scandinavian studio jewellery is simply unimaginable without Tone Vigeland (b.1938) and her work. Jewellery and object artist Anton Cepka (1936) is one of the most important jewellery artists of the twentieth century and a protagonist of the so-called studio jewellery movement, which arose after the Second World War. Today he is considered the doyen of Slovakian and Czech jewellery designers. Whitened silver, optical glass, stones and modern acrylic glass are Anton Cepka''s preferred materials. His jewellery and his objects as he himself says ''bear all the signs of today. At the same time they express the reflection of today''s over-engineered world.'' Movement and light unexpectedly come into play in these pieces; thus kinetic art enters jewellery art for the first time in a conceptual way. Aerotechnical, fragile futuristic forms, the colour of the whitened silver and titles such as Radar, Antenna, Airplane, Satellite and Planet reflect the current, technological advancement and reference of our times. Since the beginning of his creative work in 1980, Georg Dobler, the jewellery artist and lecturer at the University of Applied Arts and Science in Hildesheim, has engaged in working with geometrical forms. Also in the mid 1980s, when he first drew on naturalistic elements, provoking an outcry in the jewellery world, his work was still bound by geometrical dimensions. It was exactly because naturalism was viewed as outmoded, however, that Dobler was viewed as a pioneer by the next generation of auteur jewellery designers.The artist complements his casts from nature (exotic plants and beetles) - Dobler sees himself as a collector of structures and forms - with large, facetted stones as an artistic addition. Yellow to orange-glowing lemon citrine and tender lilac amethysts combine with the metal surfaces to create a shimmering play of colours. Pure silver is seldom found in Dobler''s work; his trademark is rather black chromium or oxidized silver surfaces that shine in iridescent black.Georg Dobler is not only a pioneer, he also finds inspiration among the great artists of early modern art. Thus in the mid 1990s he drew on the abstract paintings of a Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky or Kazimir Malevich, who ignited his fantasy and inspired his compositions. Arte Vetraria Muranese (AVEM) emerged from the liquidation of Successori Andrea Rioda in November 1931. The new factory placed a very personal accent on contemporary artistic glass production on Murano: while designs prior to the Second World War were generally still the responsibility of master glassblowers themselves, after the war designers and freelance artists increasingly determined production. Giulio Radi began experimenting in 1940, obtaining the company''s signature chromatic effects by superimposing mould-blown layers of glass, often opaque and transparent in alternation, and inlaying them with gold and silver foil. Kokon is the term Doerthe Fuchs uses to define a group of pieces of jewellery which are complete in themselves yet surprisingly draw the viewer''s eye inwards. With her project Kokon Doerthe Fuchs succeeds in uniting opposite extremes. The outcome is amazement. Even the materials she uses effortlessly overcome all sources of potential friction: coarse stone is linked with fine configurations of silver; mundane objects are veiled in the elegance of gold. 2018 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first international symposium of silver jewellery Jablonec ''68. Michael Glancy is widely recognised as a prominent innovator in the field of studio glass. After studying with the critically acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly, he found his own artistic personality by combining different techniques: Glancy works with cold glass, which he sculpts through sandblasting and acid-cutting, and then coats with electroformed copper, silver or gold. Elegant and exceptional in their quality and beauty, Michael Glancy''s sculptures reveal the artist''s pursuit for perfection; fascinated by microscopic landscapes, Glancy translates cellular structures and geological stratifications into impressive sculptural objects. The lattice patterns etched into the glass suggest latitude and longitude, while the organic and undulating vessels allude to topography. Glancy''s own very specific mode of presentation - that of a base of sheet glass which shadows or connects to the standing vessel - has become his signature style. It is as if the two-dimensional world of the sheet of glass has developed and warped itself into a three-dimensional object.
