Frayn Plays: 4 - Michael Frayn - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Michael Frayn is one of the great playwrights of our time, enjoying international acclaim and prestige. This anthology contains three of his strongest titles of serious drama: Copenhagen, Democracy and Afterlife . The volume features the definitive version of each play together with an introduction by the author and a chronology of his work. Copenhagen : ''The most invigorating and ingenious play of ideas in many a year and a work of art that humanizes physics in a way no other has done'' New York Times ''Michael Frayn''s tremendous new play is a piece of history, an intellectual thriller, a psychological investigation and a moral tribunal in full session.'' Sunday Times ''A profound and haunting meditation on the mysteries of human motivation.'' Independent Democracy : ''Michael Frayn''s complex and richly rewarding new play...is wonderfully alert to the piquant paradoxes and ironic twists of this intensely tricky period in Germany''s conversation with itself.'' Independent ''What makes Frayn''s play essential viewing is its Schiller-like grasp of practical politics'' Guardian ''Michael Frayn''s Democracy ...is one of those rare dramas that don''t just dare to think big but that fully translate their high aspirations to the stage, with sharp style and thrilling clarity'' New York Times Afterlife : ''This play is almost literally brilliant - it glitters, shines and gleams with Frayn''s trademark perceptive wit as it sends up the whole concept of theatre in the process of telling a strong, essentially tragic biographical story'' The Stage

T&T Clark Reader in Kierkegaard as Theologian - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

T&T Clark Reader in Kierkegaard as Theologian - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Lee Barrett discusses the uniqueness and challenges of Kierkegaard’s approach to theology. He examines Kierkegaard’s explicit reflections on the appropriate way to engage in the theological task, as well as shows how the theme of God’s “otherness” is held in dialectical tension with the theme of God’s intimate love. Barrett discusses Kierkegaard’s key reflections of the nature and purpose of human life as a paradoxical journey toward self-fulfilment through a self-emptying in which the self more intensively reflects God’s self-giving love. He examines the works that describe sin as both a condition in which the individual is trapped and as a culpable act for which the individual must assume responsibility. Barrett explores Kierkegaard’s thoughts on sin, his descriptions of Jesus Christ as the enactment in time of God’s eternal self-giving compassion, his view of faith and his critique of culturally established Christianity as a form of fatal religious anaesthesia. This volume includes the following pedagogical features:- Each chapter contains its own introduction, explanatory notes, discussion questions and recommendation for further reading in both the primary and secondary literature- Includes links to Kierkegaardian texts provided by the Kierkegaard Research Center of the University of Copenhagen, the Howard and Edna Hong Kierkegaard Library of St Olaf College, as well as the resources of the Søren Kierkegaard Society

Contemporary Performance Lighting - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Contemporary Performance Lighting - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This is the first major collection of critical responses to performance lighting and includes contributions from award-winning lighting designers, researchers and artists. Showcasing recent examples of work – with case studies of lighting practices in Britain, Europe, the US and China – combined with theoretical and analytical approaches to practice, this will enrich your understanding of the role and potential of light in performance and related creative practices. This volume explores three core themes and provides a framework for thinking through the role of light in performance:1. Experience — considers both the audience''s experience of light and the ways in which light influences the experience of performers2. Creativity — examines both the creative, performative capacities of light in performance, as well as the creative practices of lighting designers3. Meaning — offers an expanded view of performance aesthetics by examining the capacity of light to influence and generate meaning within performance. The case studies are drawn from a wide-array of lighting practice, including: Jennifer Tipton on the role of light as a structural language in performance; Jesper Kongshaug on the lighting of Copenhagen''s Tivoli Gardens; Lucy Carter on her work in installation and dance; Psyche Chui on the productive fusion of Western lighting techniques with contemporary Chinese opera; Katharine Williams on the role of light in feminist political theatre made by RashDash; and Paule Constable on storytelling with light in a range of productions, including War Horse , The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and Angels in America .

Private/Public in 18th-Century Scandinavia - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Private/Public in 18th-Century Scandinavia - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This open access book looks at how, in the 17th and 18th centuries, a new loanword ‘private’ came into the Nordic languages. It had very little to do with the way we define the word today. Still, the introduction of it contributed to an emerging discourse that clearly distinguished between the public – usually identified with the state – and its opposite. Private/Public in 18th-Century Scandinavia includes ten case studies analysed by leading Swedish and Danish researchers in the fields of history, law, archaeology, and theology. It considers whether the modern sense of the word ‘private’ can be found in material from the period. The questions are approached through a multitude of different sources, including parliamentary-records, letters, newspapers, architectural drawings, archaeological findings, records of probate courts, legislation, and court cases. The volume starts from the assumption that the private and the public neither were, nor are, fully separated, but instead continuously work in relation to each other. To study the private, it argues, we are compelled to pay special attention to the public and how private and public interacted.Privacy and protection of privacy remains of great topical interest and this book contributes to the present-day debate by examining neglected aspects of the history of the private before these concepts gained their modern meaning. In addition to investigating the history of these concepts in Scandinavia, the text offers a general theoretical reflection about what private was and is. The open access edition of this book is available under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license on www.bloomsburycollections.com. The Shit/La Merda - Cristian Ceresoli - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Shit/La Merda - Cristian Ceresoli - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

You have to laugh. It is a tragedy in three movements: The Thighs, The Dick, The Fame and a counter-movement: Italy. An actress creates a physical and vocal mask challenging a provocative, scandalous and beastly text. Words might be sung, howled and shrieked but a chant never emerges. In her naked physicality she tells a personal story in an unbroken flow of thoughts/words rendered as sounds and movement. The deafening screams being choked. Appeased. Imploded. This female onstage offers herself up in a feast, ready to be torn apart by anyone. A poetic piece born of the flesh that returns to the flesh, captured in a tightly-sealed aesthetic. Applause required. The Shit is driven by a desperate attempt to pull ourselves out of the mud, the latest products of the cultural genocide aptly described by Pasolini since the modern consumer society began taking form. A totalitarianism, according to Pasolini, even more repressive than the one of the Fascist era, because it''s capable of crushing us softly. Since its world premiere in Milan in 2012, #LaMerda, written by Cristian Ceresoli and embodied by Silvia Gallerano, has brought its poetic and shocking stream of consciousness on the human condition around the world with sell-out seasons in Edinburgh, London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Adelaide and across Italy (where a subtle censorship is still applied), winning six major international awards including the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award for Writing Excellence and The Stage Award for Best Performance. The play has already been translated and produced in Italian, English, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Spanish and Czech, and will shortly be translated into German and French.
