Despite their removal from England’s National Curriculum in 1988, and claims of elitism, Latin and Greek are increasingly re-entering the ‘mainstream’ educational arena. Since 2012, there have been more students in state-maintained schools in England studying classical subjects than in independent schools, and the number of schools offering Classics continues to rise in the state-maintained sector. The teaching and learning of Latin and Greek is not, however, confined to the classroom: community-based learning for adults and children is facilitated in newly established regional Classics hubs in evenings and at weekends, in universities as part of outreach, and even in parks and in prisons. This book investigates the motivations of teachers and learners behind the rise of Classics in the classroom and in communities, and explores ways in which knowledge of classical languages is considered valuable for diverse learners in the 21st century. The role of classical languages within the English educational policy landscape is examined, as new possibilities exist for introducing Latin and Greek into school curricula. The state of Classics education internationally is also investigated, with case studies presenting the status quo in policy and practice from Australasia, North America, the rest of Europe and worldwide. The priorities for the future of Classics education in these diverse locations are compared and contrasted by the editors, who conjecture what strategies are conducive to success.

Teaching Classics with Technology - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The impact of ICT on the teaching of classical languages, literature and culture has not until now been extensively described and evaluated. Nevertheless, educational technology has made a huge difference to the ways in which Classics is taught at junior, senior and college level. The book brings together twenty major approaches to the use of technology in the classroom and presents them for a wide, international audience. It thus forms a record of current and developing practice, promotes further discussion and use among practitioners (teachers, learners and trainers) and offers suggestions for changes in pedagogical practices in the teaching of Classics for the better. The many examples of practice from both UK and US perspectives are applicable to countries throughout the world where Classics is being taught. The more traditional curricula of high-school education in the UK and Europe are drawing more and more on edutech, whereas educational jurisdictions in the US are increasingly expecting high-school students to use ICT in all lessons, with some actively dissuading schools from using traditional printed textbooks. This book presents school teachers with a vital resource as they adapt to this use of educational technology in Classics teaching. This is no less pertinent at university level, in the UK and US, where pedagogy tends to follow traditionalist paradigms: this book offers lecturers frameworks for understanding and assimilating the models of teaching and learning which are prevalent in schools and experienced by their students.

Serialization, Commercialization and the Children’s Classics - Dr Amy Webster - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Serialization, Commercialization and the Children’s Classics - Dr Amy Webster - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

An exploration of the serialization of children''s classics by contemporary publishers, this book digs into the impact of the practice and provides new ways of reading the corpus of British children''s literature from the 20th century. Amy Webster demonstrates how publishers select texts for their series, which texts they omit, which outliers are sometimes included and how a core group of works from the golden age of children''s literature emerged. The text also examines how texts are abridged and transformed from publisher to publisher through close readings of The Wind in the Willows and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ; and how the repackaging of works within a series highlight issues and choices tied to key paratextual elements. Analysing data through distant reading and close reading of series from Ladybird, Longman, Puffin and Walker Illustrated editions, this book sheds light on how modern classics series are marked by variation and instability but also a reductive homogeneity.Through her use of quantitative and text-focused research, Webster reveals how commercial motivations have created a gulf between the canonical concepts of the classic and how the term functions as a marketing tool in British children’s publishing. With notions of what counts as a classic compromised and complicated, this book leads the call for a critical approach towards both the term ‘classic’ and to reading children’s classics that acknowledges how they are tied to the commercial enterprises of the children’s book business.

Modern Hungarian Culture and the Classics - Dr Peter Hajdu - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Péter Hajdu examines the cultivation of the Classics as an intellectual framework and crucial ingredient of the western aspect of Hungarian national identity. This book approaches the relationship of modern Hungarian culture to classical heritage from the various viewpoints of identity politics, education, translation history, scholarship, and its impact on literature. When the Hungarian nation-building project developed ideas of national identity, it necessarily incorporated the historical narrative according to which the Hungarians arrived at their current homeland in the Middle Ages, and only later did it adopt European culture. The duplicity of a mostly imagined Asian, pagan, barbaric or nomadic culture, and a Western, Christian, civilized identity, deeply rooted in European culture, has played and continues to play a role in the Hungarian discourse. Hajdu also studies the gradual disappearance of classics from the Hungarian school education since the 19th century, which has been accompanied by fervid political debates. However, over this period, translations of classical texts paradoxically became more frequent and popular with the decline of a classical education, even though fewer readers had access to the original texts. Despite this change, the translation strategies tended to remain school-bound. The knowledge of classical literature still leaves traces on Hungarian literature, which Hajdu explores using examples from nineteenth-century novels and contemporary poetry. This book sheds light on a topic of classical reception that has remained largely unexplored in this part of Europe, but one which has an incredibly rich history, culture and literary tradition.

The Classics in South America - Dr German Campos (appalachian State University Munoz - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This volume examines the long and complex history of the Greco-Roman tradition in South America, arguing that the Classics have played a crucial, though often overlooked, role in the self-definition in the New World. Chronicling and theorizing this history through a detailed analysis of five key moments, chosen from the early and late colonial period, the emancipatory era, and the 20th and 21st centuries, it also examines an eclectic selection of both literary and cinematographic works and artefacts such as maps, letters, scientific treatises, songs, monuments, political speeches, and even the drafts of proposals for curricular changes across Latin America. The heterogeneous cases analysed in this book reveal cultural anxieties that recur through different periods, fundamentally related to the ''newness'' of the continent and the formation of identities imagined as both Western and non-Western – a genealogy of apprehensions that South American intellectuals and political figures have typically experienced when thinking of their own role in world history. In tracing this genealogy, The Classics in South America innovatively reformulates our understanding of well-known episodes in the cultural history of the region, while providing a theoretical and historical resource for further studies of the importance of the Classical tradition across Latin America.
