Technology has allowed the world to become a smaller place. Today''s students will have actual and virtual access to more parts of the world than ever imagined by the previous generation, and teachers must be skilled in providing a global perspective to the curriculum that goes beyond the traditional focus on heroes and holidays. Instead, new approaches will extend the focus of the classroom to a more inclusive, global perspective. Such new approaches that include the creative use of technology will help students understand and appreciate those who live in different cultures. The purpose of Capturing Change is to provide these approaches. This book offers: 1. Three models for globalizing the classroom. The first model approach promotes a global curriculum, which focuses on understanding of individual differences and on reducing conflict between cultures. The second model is an integration approach, which advocates the inclusion of global issues into all curriculums. The third model reviews the traditional unit approach. 2. Activities that utilize technology. There are four strategies proven effective for using technology in the classroom as suggested by The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in its National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). The strategies include Web-based lessons, multimedia presentations, telecomputing projects, and online discussions, all four of which can be used by classroom teachers to incorporate technology into the global curriculum. 3. Research on globalizing the curriculum. This research will particularly focus on the teaching of social studies, science, mathematics, literature, related arts and physical education. For inservice and preservice teachers at all levels.

Building Walls - Ernesto Castaneda - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

The election of Donald Trump has called attention to the border wall and anti-Mexican discourses and policies, yet these issues are not new. Building Walls puts the recent calls to build a border wall along the US-Mexico border into a larger social and historical context. This book describes the building of walls, symbolic and physical, between Americans and Mexicans, as well as the consequences that these walls have in the lives of immigrants and Latin communities in the United States. The book is divided into three parts: categorical thinking, anti-immigrant speech, and immigration as an experience. The sections discuss how the idea of the nation-state itself constructs borders, how political strategy and racist ideologies reinforce the idea of irreconcilable differences between whites and Latinos, and how immigrants and their families overcome their struggles to continue living in America. They analyze historical precedents, normative frameworks, divisive discourses, and contemporary daily interactions between whites and Latin individuals. It discusses the debates on how to name people of Latin American origin and the framing of immigrants as a threat and contrasts them to the experiences of migrants and border residents. Building Walls makes a theoretical contribution by showing how different dimensions work together to create durable inequalities between U.S. native whites, Latinos, and newcomers. It provides a sophisticated analysis and empirical description of racializing and exclusionary processes.View a separate blog for the book here: https://dornsife.usc.edu/csii/blog-building-walls-excluding-people/

Volcker - William L. Silber - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Volcker - William L. Silber - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Over the course of nearly half a century, five American presidents-three Democrats and two Republicans-have relied on the financial acumen, and the integrity, of Paul A. Volcker. During his tenure as chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, when he battled the Great Inflation of the 1970s, Volcker did nothing less than restore the reputation of an American financial system on the verge of collapse. After the 2008 financial meltdown, the nation turned again to Volcker to restore trust in a shaky financial system: President Obama would name his centerpiece Wall Street regulation the Volcker Rule. Volcker''s career demonstrated that a determined central banker can prevail over economic turmoil-so long as he can resist relentless political pressure. His resolve and independent thinking-sorely tested by Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan-laid the foundation for a generation of economic stability. Indeed, William L. Silber argues, it was only Volcker''s toughness on monetary policy that "forced Reagan to be Reagan" and to rein in America''s deficit.Noted scholar and finance expert Silber draws on hours of candid personal interviews and complete access to Volcker''s personal papers to render dramatic behind-the-scenes accounts from Volcker''s career at the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve: secret negotiations with European ministers; confrontations with the White House; crisis conferences with Wall Street titans, and even tense boardroom rebellions within the Fed itself. Filled with frank commentary from Volcker himself-including why he was personally irked with the "Volcker Rule" label-this will be the definitive account of Volcker''s indispensable role in American economic history.

All-American Rebels - Robert C. Cottrell - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

All-American Rebels - Robert C. Cottrell - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

From women’s suffrage to Civil Rights for African Americans, to the environment, and the gay and lesbian liberation movement, the American Left has achieved notable successes in the 20th and 21st centuries. Sometimes celebrated and sometimes reviled, the Left has taken on many forms and reinvented itself many times over the past century. In All-American Rebels, historian Robert C. Cottrell traces the rise and fall, ebb and flow of left-wing American movements. Following an overview of early 20th century movements, Cottrell focuses on the 1960s to today, offering readers a concise introduction and helping them to understand the political and ideological roots of the Left today. Cottrell includes chapters on the most recent versions of the American left, discussing community organizing, gay liberation, the women’s movement, the Campaign for Economic Democracy, the nuclear freeze movement, opposition to U.S. intervention in Central America, the anti-WTO campaign, Code Pink, Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and more. The demand for and support of democracy and the quest for empowerment in various guises unifies these different lefts to one another and to the general unfolding of American history. Cottrell argues that democratic engagement has proven inconsistent and at times outright contradictory. The Left has been most successful when it fully embraces a democratic vision.
