For the first time a completely self-contained organ repertoire is presented which originated in the churches of northern Germany after 1780, and yet keeping up the musical traditions of the 17th century. Thus, a many-facetted, “more recent” organ music from northwestern middle Europe is now accessible. Focal points of the music clearly are church songs and counterpoint; a fascinating element is the rich chromaticism. The pieces are of medium difficulty, practical for liturgical or concert use.

Johann Wilhelm Wilms : Piano à Quatre Mains. Klaviersonaten

Johann Wilhelm Wilms [1772 1847] is regarded as the most important Dutch composer of his time. Beginning in 1791 he worked in Amsterdam as a music teacher. He left an extensive opus including orchestra music, solo concertos and chamber music. He achieved lasting fame through the song Wien Neêrlands Bloed, which was the national anthem of the Netherlands from 1815 to 1932. His Sonatas for piano four hands, op 31 and op. 41 [the latter a world premiere recording], recorded for Carus by the piano duo Hans Peter and Volker Stenzl, demonstrate that under no circumstances was he a “ poor, musical day laborer,” as he once characterized himself in all modesty. Rather, here oneexperiences the expressly enthusiastic works of a genuine musician and a musical original.

This world premiere recording of the Weihnachtsoratorium by Reinhard Keiser makes available one of the few surviving sacred works by a musician who was highly regarded by his contemporaries, primarily as a composer of operas. Well-known Christmas chorales, opulently scored, with rich polyphony, are joined by movements which depict with great delicacy the secene around the crib at Bethlehem. This CD includes, also recorded for the first time, the Magnificat by Christoph Graupner, written in 1772 to support his application for the post of Thomaskantor in Leipzig.

Christoph Schönherr, Professor at the Hamburg Conservatory of Music, is a respected expert in the field of jazz and pop choirs and he is a much sought after choral composer. He has written of his work: “I have been especially influenced by the polarity of the text. On one hand it expresses Mary's joy at her pregnancy, but on the other Mary presents a bold image of God: a God of almost old Testament sternness in his demand for justice on earth. My music depicts a strong woman, who rejoices in her happiness and also swings [many 6/8, 12/8 and swing passages], but on the other hand who in formulating her concept of God clearly stands up for the poor and needy. Here I use stylisticelements of rock and funk music.”

Mendelssohn's well-known "Lieder ohne Worte" [Songs without words] have been arranged by Bernd Stegmann for mixed choir and organ. In the process he has set sacred texts to music. The melodies, often vocal in character, and the distinctive accompanying figures are sometimes simple, in one-part adopted from the model; at other times they are in a four to six-part choral setting, sometimes as a dialog of different groups or treated as polyphonic play using the building blocks of the original. Rich color and striking music is combined with profound texts which invite reflection as well as listening.

Bless the Lord. Psalm 103

The motet Bless the Lord, O My Soul (2013) on verses from Psalm 103 exploits the possibilities of vocal combinations and the resulting sound effects to a high degree: In the opening invocation "O my soul", the soprano 1 ascends to float above the fanned out low chord of the other voices: and beginning from "For as the heavens are high above the earth", an eight-part fugato masses together into an extensive architecture of sound. The harmony of the work is tonal, but many enriched chords create a tension rich in nuances in the setting. The work has been released on the CD "Rejoice. Vocal Music by Kay Johannsen" (Carus 83.496/00).

The harmonic turns and piano configurations in La vie antérieure – the “former life” – seem almost exuberantly lyrical. At the beginning, the archaic sounds and words of the male choir conjure up a dream world that is soon flooded with the power of the waves and the rich polyphonic harmony of the choir and the piano. With the outcry “C’est là que j’ai vécu!” [I have lived there] which expresses the fervent yearning to return to a past life, the collective desperately reinforces the longing for the past. Once more, the women’s choir conjures up this lost paradise in an undulating soft sound before the desolate sadness is pierced by the power of the music of the piano postlude,creating a moment that is completely in the present.

Messa : Op. 20

Amilcare Ponchielli (1834–1886) is known nowadays mainly as an opera composer and the composition teacher of Giacomo Puccini and Pietro Mascagni. He scored his greatest success in 1876 at La Scala Milan with the opera La Gioconda, a work which is still in the repertoire of the major opera houses. Ponchielli’s sacred works were composed in his later years, when he was maestro di cappella at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. There his Mass in A flat op. 20 (also known as "Messa per la notte di natale") was premiered on Christmas Day 1882. The Mass is captivating because of its flowing, singable melodies, rich harmonies, and warm tonal colors. The important role given tothe chorus, with which the three male soloists interact closely, is striking. The first music edition of the Messa is a real discovery for choirs with good male voices: the second tenor part can largely be sung by the baritones.

The fifth anniversary of the consecration of the Dresdner Frauenkirche will occur on 31 October. To mark this occasion Carus presents the musical highlights from the CD series entitled Musik aus der Frauenkirche Dresden. The recordings in this series not only document the rich musical tradition which has been reborn in the Frauenkirche, but they are also works of art in sound. Thus this exclusive series, which in the meantime numbers a total of 18 CDs, has been given great acclaim in the press. Authenticity and quality characterize the series to a special degree. The artists most closely connected with the Frauenkirche include Ludwig Güttler, kantor Matthias Grünert ororganist Samuel Kummer. Recordings have also been made by the Dresdner Philharmonie and the Dresdner Kreuzchor, as well as the Dresdner Kammerchor, directed by, among others, the late Charles Mackerras and Hans-Christoph Rademann.
