János Galli (1921-2006) was a conductor, composer, music teacher, a well-known and highly respected personality in Hungarian wind music life. As a music teacher he directed numerous string and wind ensembles and choirs, made hundreds of transcriptions for wind orchestras, and instrumented works for ensembles of all sizes and formations. The most important of his works are his series of volumes of marches, folksong arrangements and church music. He was excellent at instrumentation. For its fine sound and easy playability we recommend to youth wind bands and their conductors this work of his composed in memory of the king who founded the Hungarian state.

Joyance - for Saint Julius Hydrophilos for picco : for Saint Julius Hydrophilos for piccolo-flute, harp and string trio

In this piece the musicians have not only instrumental but also acting roles. They have to walk about the performing area in accordance with a specific plan, while uttering words and sentences taken from James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake. The theoretical background to this use of the text is provided by the general container-function theory developed by the British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion. This theory also determines all the parameters of the music as well. Assistance in working out the harp part was provided by harpist Sarah O?Brian, who was the soloist at the premi?re of the work in Germany in 1999.

Hungary has a thousand-year-old tradition of reverence for the Virgin Mary. In the course of the centuries the Church has found more and more occasions for the celebration of Mary. The greatest is the celebration of Mary?s assumption into heaven, which coincides with the anniversary of the death of Saint Stephen, on August 15. The texts of these choral works originate from various supplicatory prayers from the office, vocal texts and hymns. The six choral works don?t form a cycle, since the texts are associated with different liturgies. The choruses: Regina caeli ? antiphon for Easter, Sub tuum praesidium ? antiphon, Maria Mater gratiae ? short hymn, Ave Regina caelorum ?antiphon for Lent, Ave maris stella ? Hymn to Mary, Virgo parens Christi benedicta ? responsorium, can be sung singly or in any combination.
