Kaija Saariaho: Verblendungen (Score)

The Full Score of Saariaho's Verblendungen for Orchestra and Tape. The piece is dedicated to Esa-Pekka Salonen, who conducted the premiere performance in Helsinki, Finland with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in April 1984. With both orchestra and tape working in opposite directions of the tonal spectrum, this is a fantastic and expressive work that balances the contrast the two elements. Despite these tonal differences, the tape and orchestra join together in an inseparable sound world and form a breath-taking orchestral piece that moves through jagged, grainy sounds to smoother, more reflective moods.

'Dinosauros' was composed in 1971 for the Danish accordion virtuoso Mogens Ellegaard. The work explores the sound possibilities of the instrument in a way that gives the work the caracter of relaxed experiment. Also the music on the tape element consists of Accordion sounds a fact that gives the music resemblances with an accordion duo.

Kaija Saariaho: Jardin Secret II (Harpsichord Part)

This is the Harpsichord Part for Kaija Saariaho's Jardin Secret II for Saariaho's 1986 work for Harpsicord and Electronics. This hair raising and spatially aware piece from 1986 also contains detailed performance instructions and tape guides. Also available is a CD and CD-Rom package, with accompaniments and all the patches and files required for a real time performance (KP00291).

Arne Nordheim: Epitaffio (SATB)

In his String Quartet (1956) Arne Nordheim used the title EPITAFFIO for the third and last movement. And in 1963 he used this title again, now for a complete work:Epitaffio per orchestra ed nastro magnetico.This orchestral work incorporates the Quasimodo text, sung by a children?s chorus, on a tape accompanying the orchestra towards the end of the piece.The present choral version was arranged and typeset by Andrew Smith, based on the instrumental movement from the string quartet, as well as the choral treatment in the orchestral setting.

Asbjørn Schaathun: Musical Grafitti Nr. 2

MUSICAL GRAFITTI(II)In Musical Grafitti(II), "virtuoso drawings for amplified piano, large ensemble and tape with cosmic sounds, von den herrn Asberion Ska-tune" (1983-84), Schaathun is particularly concerned about investigating the relationship between various kinds of compositional techniques and their actual influence on the sound image, and therebye on the musical language. Thus is Musical Grafitti about different settings of the same musical gesture, which are presented in the initializing Formula. At the same time Formula serves as a model for the progression of the entire piece on various levels.The computer-program SCHAATON, written especially for this work by Swedish composer Bo Rydberg, governs the relative intervallic relationship in the first extensive piano exposition. In this part of the piece, the computer establishes the chordal focal points of the work, thus rather paradoxically making itself redundant.The brief tape interpolations and the long ending consist of cosmic noise recorded by a satelite. This noise symbolizes the outermost edge of the musical continuum Schaathun is seeking to describe: from "white" noise to music characterized by an "advanced" syntax. To compose is to control a defined continuum of sound. In this piece the control is represended by the Formula.The piece may also be read as a big prelude to Luciano Berios "points on the curve to find..." At one point Schaathun's "curve" crosses Berios curve, and the contours become directly involved in Berio's instrumentation before passing through and the soloist disappears into the "coloured" noise into which the piece fades away.(+ Fransk versjon NMI)

Kaija Saariaho: Io (Score)

The harmonic basis for this composition is found from analysing sounds of individual instruments, with the non-harmonic sounds produced on double bass and bass flute, these provide a model for the chord structure of the piece.The harmonic energy of the piece is provided through the treatment of timbre as a system, which is formed from the categorisation of instruments and the sounds they produce. The instruments are divided into different categories according to how and where they place themselves along an axis whose end points are either clear or noise like sounds. In this approach clear, clean sounds are considered consonances with noises as dissonances.Work for Chamber Ensemble, Tape and Live Electronics. Premiered in the Pompidou Centre, Paris in in July 1987, and commissioned by IRCAM for the Ensemble Intercontemporain to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Centre Georges-Pompidou. Winner of the 1998 Ars Electronica Prize.

MAA translates from Finnish into world, earth or country. It is a complimentary title as the ballet does not have a plot as such, rather it is built around thematic archetypes such as doors, gates, stepping into new worlds, journeys and the crossing of waters. Gates can be played either as an acoustic or, often preferably, an amplified version. The acoustic version is suitable for small and resonant halls, or in a context of e.g. an early music program, in which case the piece can also be played on original instruments. This is the Full Score for one of Kaija Saariaho's most major works to date. The set of Parts is available: KP00327.

Jørgen I Jensen og Per Nørgård Om illustrationerne i bogen Fotografierne i denne bog stammer alle fra The Father Browne SJ Photographic Collection. Der er her tale om fotografier taget af Frank Browne (1880-1960), som rejste med Titanic på første del af luksuslinerens jomfrurejse, nærmere bestemt strækningen fra Southampton til Cobh (Queenstown) i Irland. Rejsen var en gave fra Browne's onkel, som i tilgift udstyrede ham med et kamera, så han i fotografisk form kunne dokumentere sejlturen. Undervejs blev Browne gode venner med en velstående, amerikansk familie, som tilbød ham at rejse med hele vejen til New York, men Browne's onkel modsatte sig og beordrede nevøen i land i Cobh: I øjeblikket nedslående for den unge rejsende, men samtidig årsagen til at han overlevede og at vi i dag kan betragte disse unikke fotos. Herudover bringes sektioner af Per Nørgårds partitur til værket Titanic med tekniske anvisninger og tidsangivelser til brug ved opførelse.
