This volume is based on the section Transnationalities -- Transidentities -- Hybridities -- Diasporization, organised by the Ibero-American and Francophone Research Centres of the University of Leipzig as part of the First Annual Conference of the Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig. By now, already a decade has passed since our conference section took place and it is due to various circumstances that this volume has not been published earlier. It carries along, in some sense, its own migration trace. Nevertheless, the questions examined in the contributions have reached even more relevance since then in both, the Old World and the New, due to the various political, social, economic and ecological crisis around the globe that have led to the increased arrival of refugees to Europe and the harsh discussion about a concrete or intelligent wall to shield the USA from Latin American migrants, among others. Today, there is an urgent political and social need for concepts of living together in much more heterogeneous and much less familiar societies. The questions, notions and cases explored in the nine contributions that comprise this publication focus on this emergency. The aim of this volume is to explore different issues of Ibadi theology from the early beginnings until the present day. Ibadi Islam emerged in the early Islamic period and played a pivotal role in the development of Islamic law and theology. Today, it continues to be an influential force in the contemporary Middle East and North Africa. Despite its antiquity, Ibadi Islam and particularly Ibadi theology remains little known and has often been misunderstood. Up to now only few prominent book-length works devoted to Ibadi theology in European language; this volume aims at redressing this gap by introducing the distinctive theological teachings of this influential Islamic school to a broad public, specialists and non-specialists alike. Dealing with a series of cases, from different periods and different sources and using an interdisciplinary approach, the authors address questions such as dogma and creed, conception of faith, theological controversies, reassessment of theological sources, the Ibadi "modernism" in last century Oman and North Africa. Medieval Ibadi sources are crucial to understand the early development of the movement and the doctrinal and political disputes which differentiate Ibadi doctrine from Sunni Islam, on the other hand the volume emphasize the importance of also focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries Ibadi sources, when the Ibadi reform movement started looking for reconciliation between Islam and modernity.

While the volumes main title suggests a rather unambiguous stand towards the manifold possible relations between music and movement, its various chapters each nuance this seemingly univocal articulation. Rather than providing the reader with an all-inclusive theory on movement that is simply mapped onto the manifold complex musical dynamics the volume attends to, each chapter explores these composite dynamics in and on their own terms. Besides a clear but diverse focus on questions of music and movement, the individual chapters have common conceptual, methodological, and theoretical ground. Issues of central concern for musicology (here understood in its most inclusive sense), such as questions of power, musical meaning, and identity construction underlie most of its chapters. Three uniting concepts, which are of crucial importance for debates within musicology and cultural studies, emerge most prominently from, frame, and connect the individual papers: relation, knowledge, and transformation. The present volume is a tribute to Lucia Calboli Montefusco, Professor Emerita of the University of Bologna, internationally recognised specialist in the history of rhetoric and President of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric 2009-11. After a discussion of her career and publications 27 essays follow linked in different ways to rhetorical argumentation, one of the central problems of Lucia Calboli Montefuscos research. Following a flexibly chronological plan, these studies discuss successively Greek theory and practice (Thucydides, Lysias, Isaeus, Isocrates, Aristotle, Chrysippus), and Greco-Roman rhetoric between the Republic and late antiquity (Cicero, Quintilian, Chariton of Aphrodisias, John Chrysostom, Choricius of Gaza, Cassiodorus, Martianus Capella). The volume ends with analyses on medieval Latin epistolography (Thirteenth century) and dialectic in the renaissance (Lorenzo Valla and Rudolph Agricola). These studies devoted to the dialectical aspect of rhetoric are enhanced by studies of the link between rhetorical argumentation and historical circumstances, the parts of the oration, other forms of textual production (the novel, the letter), theatre, torture and the law. This broad view, faithful to the breadth of "the Realm of Rhetoric" (Chaim Perelman) is also a tribute to a tradition which Lucia Calboli Montefusco has herself illuminated to a very large extent in working as well on Aristotle and Consultus Fortunatianus as on George Trapezuntius of Crete.

This book attempts a conceptual clarification of Kant''s approach to culture, given the lack of systematic study of this aspect of his thought. At its origin there was only a thematic interest in the manifold meanings of the term "culture", as well as the underlying persuasion that Kant''s moral philosophy could provide us with a systematic framework to understand the increasing relevance of "culture" in modern thought. Specifically, the hypothesis was that the emergence of culture as a relatively autonomous realm was implied in Kant''s refusal to let nature play a role in the constitution of the moral norm, and his requirement that the moral norm be defined through pure reason alone. As a result, culture would appear as a middle terrain: being neither empirical nature nor pure morality. Accordingly, culture can be approached either from the perspective of nature, or from the perspective of morality. Both approaches represent what can be termed "Kant''s explicit account of culture". Behind this explicit, two-fold account of culture, however, an implicit account of culture in terms of "projection of man''s subjectivity" can be discovered. This latter account, itself a consequence of the critical enterprise, constitutes Kant''s most original contribution to the philosophy of culture.

This is the second volume devoted to the history of the question of categories, an issue which was also the focus of the collective volume published in 2017. The aim is still to describe some trajectories and perspectives of this history, without claiming an exhaustive overview of it, but rather representing a contribution to a wider project, which is gradually reaching its goal. In this volume the problem of categories has been investigated in the work of further philosophers, from Plato to Quine; in this way the present work complements that done in the first volume. The question of categories has been dealt with in different times and contexts, sometimes coming into the foreground and sometimes concealing itself -- and this is something worthy of investigation in itself. It is also interesting to understand why in particular contexts greater attention is paid to a particular issue that had previously lost its centrality.

The state of Oaxaca has always held a distinct position in Mexico: Not only is it among the poorest, but its population is also considered to be particularly combative. It therefore does not seem surprising that the state harbours the most prominent and vocal union section of the teachers union SNTE and the dissident teachers'' movement CNTE. The power and influence of the Sección 22 reach beyond the limits of educational matters and the schools and into state politics, affecting the lives of many Oaxacans -- also due to frequent street blockades and strikes that lead to educational deficits for children. The teachers'' embeddedness in society and their narrative of protest sets their struggle in the context of the defence of the entire Mexican peoples rights and in the idea of the state''s cultural heritage. The result is an outstandingly strong social movement, apparently organising in protest as a reflex against government policies, even when these aim at a long-necessary democratisation.

"Taking panegyric literature about Damascus as an example, this study discusses its literary elaboration and established motif traditions in relation to a wide range of textual representations of cities. The vast corpus of city panegyrics in prose and poetry gives testimony to the dynamics of urban life and urban consciousness, as it has also always been a source of civic pride and belonging. The vigorous form of aesthetic elaboration about cities was both persistent and open for contestation at the same time. A striking example, which attests to this contestation and the dynamics of city praise is a city-slam (mufahara / munazara) between Baghdad and Damascus, written in ca. 16th century Syria. This study focuses on rhetorical elements and their inversion in the city praise rather than on the topographical history of Damascus or other featured cities. Exposing the aesthetic devices and analyzing their functions by inverting them according to the rules of poetic speech offers a convenient tool for a more adequate understanding of city panegyrics, and the cultural perception of cities. Panegyrics contain assertions relating both to praise and criticism. Hardly any literary city praise is a mere embellishment or a hymnody of the respective city, and hardly any form of dispraise is just a verbal outburst without offering a counterproposal."

This work attempts to organise and classify the entire Skakespearen vocabulary. It presents the "world" which can be derived from Shakespeare''s idiolect and gives an impression of the surrounding Elizabethan world. The perspective is thus not solely personal or literary or linguistic but also historical, sociological and cultural. This classified inventory consists of 37 main groups and 897 subgroups, ranging from the physical world to sense perception to law to religion to time to space. Emphasis is given to such interests as communication and motion, solidarity and warfare. Other topics covered include horses and health, clothes and colours, swords and social structures, earth and education, gout and government, plants and pride. To account for the entire vocabulary, certain groups not normally found in a work of this kind have to be formed. The largest consists of the names of places and persons arranged so as to constitute a map and a pocket history, mythology and onomasticon. Others include malapropisms, oaths, word classes and foreign words.

These novelsGalatea 2.2, Plowing the Dark, The Echo Maker, and Generosity: An Enhancementreveal complex structural elements, highlighting interconnectedness between various interdisciplines. This study reveals how interdisciplinarity is necessary for the evolution of writing, while it identifies modes of artificial evolution in Powers novels. Three prominent types of artificial evolution are addressed: human genome engineering, brain malleability, and artificial intelligence. The book tackles civilizational dynamics in the light of clashes of groups with the same identity, as well as terrorism and wars. It examines artistic evolution through iconoclash, interweaving virtual environment CAVE-, architecture-, and scripture-like structures. By exploring these aspects, the novels interdisciplinary structures become visible. This book shows that the interdisciplinary novel is liquescent and multiplanar. Its narrative structures are imprinted with superimposed cross-cultural and interdisciplinary strata. These establish not only interconnections but also evolutionary exponential trends. This dissertation presents an analysis of the musical belt voice, especially the belt sound and its necessary vocal technique, and examines the unique actors personage of the elite female Broadway musical performer. Discourses about the status of the Broadway Belt as star and diva, as well as her public reception, strongly suggest a feminist perspective. Through belting out in feminist roles on stage and speaking out on related issues offstage, she contradicts gender preconceptions. A focused discussion on African-American belters and their roles sheds light on the intersectionality of racism and anti-feminism in Broadway musical theatre. Finally, the study presents a musical analysis of Roses Turn in Gypsy alongside a case study of the character Rose, one of the most influential roles for a Broadway Belt. This monograph advocates the creation of new musicals as star vehicles for Broadway belters of any ethnicity and gender as indispensable to guide Broadway musical theatre into its platinum age.
