Mr. Funkyman!

Every band needs a good funk chart to add to its festival or concert repertoire and Mr. Funkyman! from Mark Taylor is sure to fit the bill. Using a moderate tempo, the rhythm section churns throughout as the brass and saxes provide powerful riffs and punches. This is also a rare chance for your guitarist to turn loose on a solo!

This steamy and sultry theme from Henry Mancini is instantly recognizable from just the opening phrase. Rick Stitzel's medium slow swing treatment is largely ensemble based, and will sound great with young players.

Featuring a light rock groove which alternates with stop time sections, this tune by jazz master Wes Montgomery works great for young bands. The chart opens with a duet of trumpet and tenor sax, and includes a sax soli built on fragments of Wes' own original solo. Solos are also included for trumpet and tenor sax.

Originally released by Electric Light Orchestra in 1978, this rock hit has been thrust back in the limelight thanks to numerous movie usages including the opening sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Whether or not you're a fan of the movie, this is still a great-sounding arrangement playable by young bands.

Featured in the opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, this '70s hit recorded by Electric Light Orchestra has a timeless feel and sounds great with a marching band!

Mister Magic (Mr. Magic)

Skillfully blending jazz with R&B, saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. created a fusion classic with his 1975 recording of this tune. Roger beautifully adapts the soulful lines and hypnotic groove for jazz ensemble in this nicely scored arrangement.

Mr. Holland's Opus (Medley)

The dramatic music from this exceptional movie depicting the life of a music teacher offers you a wonderful opportunity to draw attention to the value of music education in our schools. Includes: An American Symphony, Visions Of A Sunset, and Cole's Song.

James Bond movies always seem to inspire terrific music and this latest installment is no exception. Sam Smith's memorable ballad features sweeping melodies and haunting harmonies. Nicely adapted for band by Michael Brown.

Sam & Dave were early pioneers of the soul sound, and this medium tempo rocker helped to put them on the map. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted it for young bands with simplified but still very convincing rhythms. Includes solos for alto sax and trumpet.

Mr. T. and company ruled the TV airwaves in the '80s, along with their equally famous theme song. A great way to pump up the crowd and fire up your own A team.

A simple diatonic melody that lends itself well to John Leavitt's unique styling for strings, Sweet Afton also features moments for a quartet within the string ensemble. Once again Mr. Leavitt has provided us with a simple yetartistic work for young string groups. Dur: 2:30

Rivers (Movement II of Georgian Suite)

Commissioned by the Pickens County (GA) Middle School Band on the occasion of the band program being split into separate schools, this marvelous composition for young players explores the emotions of separation. Sam uses theanalogy of a river that, when divided, maintains its identity yet becomes two separate entities. Three themes are presented individually then come together in grand fashion at the end. Our Kingsland Spring : Movement I of Georgian Spring

Commissioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association District 8 Honor Band, this lyrical work uses flowing melodic lines and creative scoring to create an effective setting for young bands. Sam skillfully alternates sections oflight and delicate writing with full broad-sounding chorale passages in a work that definitely sounds more impressive and complex than its easy level would indicate. Here's a terrific suite arranged for school string ensembles by the original fiddler from the Broadway show, Herbert Baumel. Mr. Baumel's carefully crafted collection is presented in separate movements that can be performed invarious combinations.
