The Republic (Hero Classics) - Plato - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Part of the Hero Classics series “I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.” The Republic , a pioneering work of political philosophy, is a dialogue that does not feature Plato directly as at the heart is Socrates – his teacher. Even though the conversations between Socrates and Athenians as well as foreigners take place thousands of years ago, the questions Plato addresses in the volume are far from archaic. Should men and women have equal rights? Should rulers be responsible for the well-being of their citizens and the healthcare system in general? Is it ever acceptable to lie, especially if it is a so-called ‘noble lie’? And of course, how far can we stretch social mobility? Although many of Plato’s ideas are utopian and will be regarded as immensely positive aspirations by contemporary society, some conclusions drawn by the thinker might arouse our questioning or even disdain. In particular, Plato argues that censorship can underpin the citizens’ goodness and orderly life of the whole community – an affirmation that is unlikely to be embraced by modern-day democracies. Because the philosopher prefers to construct an imaginary city in order to regard his ideas, his political ruminations can be read with a pragmatic mind but also for its artistic richness and literary thrill as Plato does not shy away from metaphors and allegories. The text is one of the most studied and referenced after the Bible and akin to the Holy text it does not have to be read in a single sitting but rather carefully revised and meditated upon to grasp its nuances and their applicability to our modern lives. It is an insight into the history of human civilization and the functionings of an individual within society – the read that is likely to be worthwhile for an advanced bibliophile and casual reader alike. The Prince (Hero Classics) - Niccolo Machiavelli - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Prince (Hero Classics) - Niccolo Machiavelli - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Part of the Hero Classics series “Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really are.” The Prince is generally labelled as a cynical and overly pragmatic account of gaining and retaining political power. It is a significant deviation from the righteous meditations of Plato and Aristotle, which emphasise the goodness of human nature. Living in a harsh political climate, Machiavelli devised a more practical and true-to-life guide for leaders who cannot possibly be always good and just. For instance, he talks among other things about the importance to inflict pain all at once but distribute the rewards available gradually and in limited amounts. Besides, the idea that ‘the ends justify the means’ had never been featured in literature so prominently and openly before. Far-fetched at first glance, Machiavelli’s insights after some analysis starts making practical sense when every state and society need to maintain one thing – stability. Although not idealistic, the text is undeniably valid as we can easily track the Prince’s features in the best and the worst political leaders of the previous century who are united by the amount of power they were able to exerts – from political heroes such as Churchill and JFK to fascist and communist dictators. In the modern world, The Prince is a viable manual of conduct more than ever with the intense demand for competitiveness not only in the political but equally in business and other spheres. The text is also famous for being written in the vernacular rather than in classical Latin. What might surprise modern readers is that, actually, this peculiarity halted the text’s dissemination across Europe as most translations were still done from Latin. The text nevertheless has reached its audience and become one of the most recognizable and accessible reads on politics and leadership. The Life of Charlotte Bronte (Hero Classics) - Elizabeth Gaskell - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Life of Charlotte Bronte (Hero Classics) - Elizabeth Gaskell - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Part of the Hero Classics series “As far as she could see, her life was ordained to be lonely, and she must her nature to her life, and, if possible, bring the two into harmony. When she could employ herself in fiction, all was comparatively well. The characters were her companions in the quiet hours, which she spent utterly alone, unable often to stir out of doors for many days together.” When Charlotte Bronte’s father asked Gaskell to write his daughter’s biography, his main concern was to preserve the legacy of Charlotte and present an authorised take on her life as opposed to the speculations and gossip in the yellow papers. Gaskell and Charlotte had met on just a few occasions, so the biographer had to do profound research to actually delve into her mysterious life. From Charlotte’s own notes to various letters she had access to, Gaskell is seen mapping through a range of sources to find out the truth of her life. Right from the first pages of the text, we can distinctly spot Gaskell’s artistic infusions of metaphors and the poetic descriptions of the setting as well as doing justice with the life of Charlotte Bronte. This biography is all that is needed for Bronte’s readers as well as the admirers of inventive stylistic takes in non-fictional writing. Upon its publication in 1857, The Life of Charlotte Bronte quite predictably caused controversy, so much so that the biographer was threatened with a legal action. Exciting exploration into Charlotte’s life and the criticism which followed, this makes it a must read for Bronte students and fans. The Castle of Otranto (Legend Classics) - Horace Walpole - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

“He was persuaded he could know no happiness but in the society of one with whom he could for ever indulge the melancholy that had taken possession of his soul.” The Castle of Otranto is a macabre tale that revolves around a haunted castle. Manfred, the lord of Otranto, finds his son, Conrad, smashed by an enormous helmet on his wedding day. It is soon revealed that according to an ancient ambiguous prophecy Conrad''s death might have been an ominous event that signifies the end of his lordship. To rectify the situation Manfred decides to marry his son''s bride despite having a wife. Will Manfred plot succeed? Is he indeed a true prince of the castle? Walpole got the inspiration for this bizarre story from a dream. He gave his novel a very authentic embellishment using the plan of Strawberry Hill castle for the set in the novel. He also went as far as to make a believable spoof in the Preface to the first edition that the novel was recovered and translated from an old Italian manuscript. Not as culturally present and talked about a title as other Gothic classics like Frankenstein or Dracula , Otranto became the cornerstone text of the genre. The echoings of Otranto are even noticeable in more contemporary gothic tales such as Toni Morrison''s Beloved where a building is more than a location but an entire mysterious entity in itself. “No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one’s existence—that which makes its truth, its meaning—its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream—alone.” Regarded as one of greatest English novels of the twentieth century, Heart of Darkness tracks the aftermath of a disturbing voyage up the Congo River. This provocative novel, inspired by Joseph Conrad''s own experiences, touches on economic, social and political exploitation. Almost one-hundred years after publication, this timeless classic provided the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola''s 1979 film Apocalypse Now . Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Hero Classics) - Frederick Douglass - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Hero Classics) - Frederick Douglass - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Part of the Hero Classics series “Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.” Douglass cultivated himself to such an extent that the listeners of his lectures doubted if his narratives were true. His autobiography is both a compelling tale of a slave and a contribution to the public discourse on slavery. His language is poetic and precise honed in its simplicity as if something artificially put together but immensely natural at the same time. Opening this book is opening the door into Douglass''s consciousness and tracking his inner journey of finding himself in the world: a story of his childhood and youth – a long and laborious path to freedom. Douglass talks about the explicit punishments and tortures that slaves were exposed to. Despite the suffering, he emphasises the power of self-education and continuous resistance that pushes one to fight their predicament. The publication of this book was such an unprecedented event that the author had to leave the US for Europe for about two years. The fact that Douglass''s experience and meditations were issued in print gave him a wider audience, not restricting dissemination of his beliefs to those who could physically come to his public speeches. A Christmas Carol (Legend Classics) - Charles Dickens - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

No space of regret can make amends for one life''s opportunity misused. A Christmas Carol is one of the most beloved and heart-warming Christmas tales of all time. Ebenezer Scrooge is a greedy and unsympathetic man who has no time for Christmas. "If I could work my will," said Scrooge indignantly, "Every idiot who goes about with ''Merry Christmas'' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!" Yet everything changes when his former partner, Jacob Marley, returns from the dead to haunt him on Christmas Eve. Soon he has to face the Christmases of his past, present and future in a journey to become a better person. The Trial (Legend Classics) - Franz Kafka - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

“It''s only because of their stupidity that they''re able to be so sure of themselves.” A novel of such ambiguity will inevitably lend itself to a diversity of interpretation, but in The Trial you can at least be sure to find every element of storytelling now defined as Kafkaesque . Josef K., our protagonist, is unexpectedly arrested on the morning of his thirtieth birthday. The agents who arrest him are unidentified, the agency they work for is unspecified, and the crime for which he has been accused is unknown. When he is released, shortly after, he is told to await further instruction. So begins the manic and emotionless trial of a man beholden to the whims of an unknown force, and his painstaking attempts to find a way out of this existential maze. The Trial brings into focus the absurdity of life, our universal fear of judgement, and one ultimate question: how much of this endless maze will you explore before you accept the fate life has bestowed upon you? The Metamorphosis (Legend Classics) - Franz Kafka - Bog - Legend Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.” The Metamorphosis - the masterpiece of Franz Kafka - was first published in 1915 and is one of the seminal works of fiction of the twentieth century. The novel is cited as a key influence for many of today’s leading authors; as Auden wrote: "Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man". Traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, wakes to find himself transformed into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Gregor''s transformation is never revealed, and as he attempts to adjust to his new condition he becomes a burden to his parents and sister, who are repelled by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become. A harrowing, yet strangely comic, meditation on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation, The Metamorphosis has taken its place as one of the most widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction.
