The narrative re-tellings of the life, reign, and death of the English King Edward II (reigned 1307–1327) present a unique opportunity for scholars of sexuality in the early modern era. This is because the works of authors like Christopher Marlowe, Michael Drayton, Sir Francis Hubert, Elizabeth Cary, and Richard Niccols were all inspired by the public, cultural memory fashioned from Edward’s same-sex love affair with Piers Gaveston. As such, each of them presents a particular representation of and a specific discourse about male-male sexual relations in the Renaissance. In other words, what these works present is a concentrated body of literature about same-sex love in the early modern era: works that openly and frankly explore the possible origins of the love, the reasons and causes for it; works that explore the ramifications of male-male romantic relationships; works that explore the sexual politics and sociocultural dynamics of same-sex romantic partnerships; and works that describe and denote same-sex love from an English Renaissance perspective. This study looks at each of the major Renaissance texts about Edward II and examines the means through which each text understands and analyzes the nature of male-male same-sex love. From Marlowe’s crafting of a lover-identity for Edward to Drayton’s obsession with Marlowe’s version of (gay) history; from Hubert’s Augustinian construction of Edward’s nature to Cary’s identification with the fallen king to Niccols’ inspired exemplum, what each of these works demonstrates is that the “love that dare not speak its name” would not be silenced, at least not in the case of Edward and Gaveston. When one sees the name Edward II, one also sees his same-sex loves. The correlation has become ingrained into our public recall of history. Thus, as far as the world is concerned, Edward II was—and ever will be—the gay king.

It is argued that the primary sources of Muslim knowledge addressed sexual acts between the same gender in the context of inhospitality, exploitation, coercion and disease, but not true same-sex unions; past Muslim scholarship is silent on the issue of sexual orientation and Muslim same-sex unions. The arguments of contemporary conservative Muslim leaders are deconstructed and the case for Muslim same-sex unions is made based on jurisprudential principles and thorough arguments from within the Muslim tradition.

Rather than settling the question of whether states ought to abolish marriage, make it more inclusive, contractual, or call it something else, this book exposes readers to some of the normative, legal, and empirical questions that Americans must address before they can deliberate thoughtfully about whether to keep the marital status quo where monogamy remains privileged. Unlike much of the debate over same-sex marriage, they exchange reasons with one another as they discuss marital reform. This book is for ordinary Americans, their elected representatives, and judges, to help them ultimately decide whether they want to continue to define marriage so narrowly, make it more inclusive to avoid discrimination, or have the state leave the marriage business. (Inter)racial Relationships as Accompaniment in Twenty-First Century African American Novels explores the acts of accompaniment to disrupt the embodied discursive practices of whiteness and Black vulnerability as a way to change social relations across racial difference in the novels. The novels analyzed in the book explore those Black male characters, who work through the norms of whiteness in their relations with Black and white wo/men while at the same time enacting the practices of accompaniment to subvert the embodied practices of whiteness. At a time when there is the rise of interest in activist work such as the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement against the systems of white supremacy in the post-Trump era, these novels shape an understanding of Black characters’ struggle against discursive violence as a radical social praxis to transform the everyday life. The book consists of four chapters on Kalisha Buckhanon’s Speaking of Summer (2019), Kalisha Buckhanon’s Upstate (2005), Ben Burgess Jr.’s Defining Moments: Black and White (2020), and Walter Mosley’s Every Man a King: A King Oliver Novel (2023). While these novels depict a critique of racialized everyday life, they interrogate whiteness as a political act of devaluation of Blackness and Black life by establishing relations through accompaniment. The act as such stretches the boundary lines between who is the accompanier and the accompanied in shifting configurations of whiteness and blackness in the positioning of the vulnerable.
