The Power to Care - Erez Zverling - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Power to Care - Erez Zverling - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

What happens when men and women feel powerful in intimate relationships? When does power corrupt and when does it lead to positive consequences, such as increased sensitivity to others' needs, personal growth, and social responsibility? This book offers anyone interested in such questions a clear and accessible depiction of the effects of social power, based on cutting-edge theory and research. The book starts with a general discussion on the ways power influences individuals. The role of one's personality, goals, and culture seem to play a decisive role in whether power leads to benevolent or malevolent consequences. Some effects of power are more intuitively understood (eg: taking from or contributing to a common resource, or aggressive responses in parents who feel powerless), while other effects regard much more surprising phenomena (eg: self-fulfilling prophecies, stopping an annoying fan, or forgiveness for a transgression). Following the description of this social-psychological mechanism, this book discusses the cultural and developmental circumstances in which power is experienced. Culturally acquired gender-roles, experiencing racism, egoistic vs. altruistic motivations, and defensive tendencies -- all influence what men and women want in intimate relationships, and the way power can motivate them to attain their goals. These circumstances may explain the gender differences found in the results of three experiments, described in Chapter 4. In these experiments, men and women in long-term, intimate relationships reacted differently to a temporary sense of power, in terms of their tendency to self-focus, take the perspective of others, and objectify their relationship partners. The last section discusses the seemingly contradictory beliefs of professionals and laymen alike, that power corrupts, but that the empowerment processes yields positive results. In this section, the role of power and empowerment processes is discussed, mainly in macro-level interventions, in intimate partner violence (for both victims and perpetrators), overcoming addiction, and in policy practice (eg: in court verdicts regarding cases of post-divorce relocation of custodial parents).

Credit-Based Insurance Scores - Martin H Tarlington - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Section 215 of the FACT Act (FACTA)1 requires the Federal Trade Commission (FTC or the Commission) and the Federal Reserve Board (FRB), in consultation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, to study whether credit scores and credit-based insurance scores affect the availability and affordability of consumer credit, as well as automobile and homeowners insurance. FACTA also directs the agencies to assess and report on how these scores are calculated and used; their effects on consumers, specifically their impact on certain groups of consumers, such as low-income consumers, racial and ethnic minority consumers, etc.; and whether alternative scoring models could be developed that would predict risk in a manner comparable to current models but have smaller differences in scores between different groups of consumers. The Commission issues this report to address credit-based insurance scores primarily in the context of automobile insurance. Credit-based insurance scores, like credit scores, are numerical summaries of consumers'' credit histories. Credit-based insurance scores typically are calculated using information about past delinquencies or information on the public record (eg: bankruptcies); debt ratios (i.e., how close a consumer is to his or her credit limit); evidence of seeking new credit (e.g., inquiries and new accounts); the length and age of credit history; and the use of certain types of credit (e.g., automobile loans).

Food Loss in the United States - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Food Loss in the United States - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

"Food loss" represents the amount of edible food, post-harvest, that is available for human consumption but is not consumed for any reason; it includes cooking loss and natural shrinkage (eg: moisture loss); loss from mould, pests, or inadequate climate control; and plate waste. "Food waste" is a component of food loss and occurs when an edible item goes unconsumed, such as food discarded by retailers due to undesirable colour or blemishes and plate waste discarded by consumers. Food loss (particularly the food waste component) is becoming an increasingly important topic both domestically and internationally. Better estimates of the amount and value of food loss, including food waste, could help serve as quantitative baselines for policymakers and the food industry to set targets and develop initiatives, legislation, or policies to minimise food waste, conserve resources, and improve human nutrition. Reducing food loss would likely reduce food prices in the United States and the rest of the world, though the effects depend on the nature of supply, including import and export considerations. This book provides an estimated amount, value, and caloric value of post-harvest food losses at the retail and consumer level in the United States. It also discusses supermarket loss estimates for fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, and seafood and their use in the ERD loss-adjusted food availability data.

Binge Drinking in Adolescents & College Students - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Binge Drinking in Adolescents & College Students - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Binge Drinking has been argued to be the number one public health hazard and the primary source of preventable morbidity and mortality for the the more than 6 million college students in the United States. Binge drinking often begins in adolescence and continues into young adulthood. Recent estimates indicate that 1 in 5 adolescents and 1 in 2 college students binge drink. Binge drinking has resulted in numerous alcohol-related tragedies, including acute alcohol poisonings, falls, and automobile collisions, and is often associated with other high-risk behaviours. This comprehensive resource contains all of the newest information that is now known about binge drinking and how this type of alcohol consumption (drinking to get drunk) differs from social drinking and chronic drinking and alcoholism. All of the recent research on this topic are included, such as the results from recent animal studies that indicate that binge drinking may be more damaging to an adolescent brain compared to an adult brain and how changes in trends in alcohol consumption (such as mixing energy drinks with alcohol) maybe be exacerbating this behaviour. finally, recent successful intervention techniques both on the individual level (eg: motivational interviewing in the emergency room) to the institutional level (e.g., programs to reduce binge drinking on college campuses) are described. This book is an excellent resource for any professional who comes in contact with the problems associated with this type of alcohol consumption.

Contemporary Perspectives on Legal Regulation of Sexual Behavior - Monica K Miller - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Contemporary Perspectives on Legal Regulation of Sexual Behavior - Monica K Miller - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Throughout history, the law has regulated sexual behaviours. Some regulations eventually become outdated and are no longer enforced. For instance, many states have adultery laws that are rarely or never enforced. Other regulations have been adopted more recently, as culture and technology have advanced. For example, laws regulating internet pornography are relatively recent. Often, these regulations are controversial and prompt analysis and research. It is the purpose of this book to present a variety of original research and legal analyses concerning such regulations. Research in psychology and social justice is particularly applicable to the study of legal regulations of sexual behaviour. As such, this edited volume will take a ''psycho-legal'' approach by addressing such issues using both psychological and legal principles. This book will contain original research articles, psycho-legal analyses, and psycho-legal briefs. All will involve current issues relating to the legal regulation of sexual behaviour and its outcomes. Some themes include access to sex (e.g., prostitution) or sexual materials (e.g., obscenity), teen sexual behaviour, the legal implications of the media''s portrayal of sexual behaviour, the outcomes of sexual behaviour (eg: abortion), psychological factors that predict support for laws that regulate sexual behaviour and outcomes, and ways in which the legal system can improve the lives of those it serves. It is the goal of this book to present original perspectives and prompt discussion within legal and social science communities.

Hyaluronic Acid - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Hyaluronic Acid - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book offers a valuable clinical resource for health professionals and researchers. It gives an overview about the pivotal role played by High Molecular Hyaluronic Acid (HMW-HA) during pregnancy and its applications in the gestational period. Hyaluronic acid is a critical component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and one of the most interesting, versatile and useful natural molecules in almost all areas of biology. As widely reported, HA has a pivotal role in several phases of pregnancy, from fertilisation to labour and it displays several regulatory activities and functional properties based on its different molecular weight. While low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) is widely used in gynaecology for menopause-related symptoms or in association with physical treatments (eg: radiation therapy) to counteract the onset of adverse events, HMW-HA has been poorly evaluated as clinical treatment. Its physiological presence in the extracellular matrix of all the main organs and tissues involved in pregnancy (uterus, cervix, placenta, decidua, chorion, amnios, ovarium etc..) suggests the importance of this molecule for a successful gestation. Several papers, in particular, shed light on its importance for blastocyst adhesion and implantation, for an efficient immune tolerance and for the correct development of haemo-lymphatic system. It has been demonstrated that HMW-HA has regulatory activity on the PGRMC1 expression, a specific progesterone receptor expressed in maternal and foetal-maternal interface tissues, involved in uterine quiescence. On these premises, the administration of HMW-HA may represent an interesting treatment opportunity for the prevention of recurrent miscarriage and pre-term birth (PTB) in patients with risk factors. The high safety profile of HMW-HA further supports its administration in pregnancy. All these interesting topics will be discussed and deepened in this book, giving the opportunity to explore in detail every aspect of this effective and attractive molecule, thus helping physicians to assess the state of connective tissues in pregnancy and to evaluate the risk for the onset of gestational complications.

Saving for College Through Qualified Tuition (Section 529) Programs - Linda Levine - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Saving for College Through Qualified Tuition (Section 529) Programs - Linda Levine - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Congress has tried to make higher education more affordable by providing favourable tax treatment to savings accumulated in qualified tuition programs (QTPs), also called Section 529 programs after their citation in the Internal Revenue Code. QTPs initially allowed individuals to save for qualified higher education expenses(QHEEs) on a tax-deferred basis. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) made permanent the temporary enhancements to QTPs contained in the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. The enhancements include making qualified withdrawals from QTPs tax-free. One type of QTP, prepaid tuition plans, enables account owners to make payments on behalf of student beneficiaries for a specified number of academic periods/course units at current prices thereby providing a hedge against tuition inflation. States were the only sponsors of prepaid plans until Congress extended sponsorship to eligible higher education (private) institutions effective in 2002. States remain the sole sponsor of the more popular type of Section 529 program, college savings plans, which account for most of the $105.7 billion in QTP assets as of December 31, 2006. College savings plans can be used toward a variety of QHEEs at any eligible institution regardless of which state sponsors the plan or where the beneficiary attends school. In contrast, if beneficiaries of state-sponsored prepaid plans attend out-of-state or private schools, the programs typically pay the same tuition that would have been paid to an eligible in-state public school. Also unlike prepaid plans, in which the state plan invests the pooled contributions with the intent of at least matching tuition inflation, college savings account owners can select from a range of investment portfolios. College savings plans thus offer the chance of greater returns than prepaid plans, but they also could prove more risky. Additionally, college savings plans charge fees (e.g., enrolment fees and underlying mutual fund fees) that lower returns -- more so for accounts opened through investment advisors (e.g., sales charges). The level of these fees vis-á-vis the tax savings, the extent and manner of fee disclosure across plans, and the role of federal regulators in this area was the subject of oversight during the 108th Congress. (More recently, the 109th Congress included in the PPA enactment of Section 529(f). It charges the Secretary of the Treasury with developing regulations to prevent abuse of Section 529 and to carry out its purposes in general. The Internal Revenue Service currently is developing a notice of proposed rule making, which will include portions of the 1998 proposed regulation and anti-abuse rules.) Both types of Section 529 programs have several features in common beyond qualified withdrawals being tax-free. Earnings not applied toward QHEEs (eg: the beneficiary forgoes college) generally are taxable and subject to a penalty. The tax and penalty can be avoided if account owners designate a new beneficiary who is an eligible relative of the original beneficiary. Account owners, rather than beneficiaries, maintain control over the funds. Contributions are not deductible on federal tax returns.
