Nick Wise: Celebrity Vineyards - From Napa To Tuscany In Search Of Great Wine

Nick Wise: Celebrity Vineyards - From Napa To Tuscany In Search Of Great Wine

From the hills of Napa to the mountain slopes of Piedmont, writers Nick Wise and Linda Sunshine went in search of great wine and famous people who are also winemakers. Their astonishing trip, the wines they tasted, and the incredible men and women they met are recounted in loving and often humorous detail in this fully illustrated and eminently readable new book, Celebrity Vineyards. In the past few years, helming a winery has become more and more popular among the rich and famous. But how much involvement in the actual process of making that wine did those celebrities actually have? What was it like to get into winemaking after having a successful career in another field? Were they merely name endorsements or were they part of the incredibly difficult process of creating great wine from a field of grapes? To find out, Wise and Sunshine journeyed to Northern California to interview such winemakers as B. R. Cohn, manager of the Doobie Brothers; screenwriter Robert Kamen of The Karate Kid fame; race car drivers Mario Andretti and Randy Lewis; filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola; legendary football coach Dick Vermeil; acclaimed chef Charlie Palmer; the Walt Disney family; and representatives from the estates of former TV actors Raymond Burr and Fess Parker. In Canada?s Niagara Wine Valley, they discovered the wine estates of actor Dan Aykroyd and hockey great Wayne Gretzky. And in the hills of Tuscany, they tasted the wines of race car driver Jarno Trulli, adult-film star Natalie Oliveros (known professionally as Savanna Samson), and world-renowned composer Ludovico Einaudi. Their last visit was to the hills of Spain, where they toured Anta Banderas, the winery of Antonio Banderas. Finally, the writers include a tribute to America?s very first vintner, Thomas Jefferson, whose Monticello estate is still producing wine from the grapes that the third president of the United States planted more than 200 years ago.Written for fans of wine, travel, and the rich and famous, Celebrity Vineyards is a fascinating journey into a world that, for most of us, is only a dream. But what an amazing dream it is! Here are artists and entrepreneurs, dreamers and businesspeople who share a love of wine, a respect for the grape, and the joy of creating something amazing out of the land. Like a great glass of wine, these people will touch your heart and stay in your memory. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or can barely taste the difference between red and rosé, Celebrity Vineyards will delight, charm, and educate your palate.

Steely Dan: Reelin' In The Years

Steely Dan: Reelin' In The Years

Reelin’ In The Years is the acclaimed biography of Steely Dan, now updated to include details of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s work up to the very untimely passing of Walter Becker in 2017. The first biography to have been published on Steely Dan, it tells the strange tale of how Becker and Fagen, a couple of cynical New York jazz fans, wormed their way into a record contract and astonished critics with their superb debut, Can’t Buy A Thrill, in 1973. Seven albums later, after Aja had topped charts everywhere, they were among the biggest selling acts in the world. Then they quit, only to reform in 1993 more popular than ever. But Steely Dan were different from the rest of rock’s super-sellers. They rarely gave interviews. After some early bad experiences on the road, they refused to tour. They didn’t have their photographs taken. Few people even knew what they looked like. Steely Dan weren’t even a proper group; it was two musicians and their producer, yet every top-notch player in the world lined up to appear on their albums. They were perfectionists. They were enigmatic. They were very rich. Their music was the coolest around. In Reelin’ In The Years, Brian Sweet, founder of Metal Leg – the now defunct UK based Steely Dan fanzine – draws back the veil of secrecy that has surrounded Becker and Fagen. Here at last is the true story of how they made their music and lived their lives. Includes many photographs and a complete discography.

Watson Doc Guitar Artistry Gtr Dvd

Watson Doc Guitar Artistry Gtr Dvd

Doc Watson was a legendary performer who blended his traditional Appalachian musical roots with bluegrass, country, gospel and blues to create a unique style and an expansive repertoire. His flatpicking style elevated the acoustic guitar to solo status in bluegrass and country music, and whose interpretations of traditional American music profoundly influenced generations of folk and rock guitarists. Doc was born in Deep Gap, North Carolina on March 3, 1923, into a family already rich in musical tradition. His mother, Annie Watson, sang traditional secular and religious songs, and his father, General Watson, played the banjo, which was Doc's first instrument as well. In 1953 Doc met Jack Williams, a local piano player, and played rockabilly/swing music for seven years, a period and a style that he later revisited in the album Docabilly. But he also continued to play acoustic traditional music with his family and with his banjo playing neighbor, Clarence Tom Ashley. In 1960, spurred by the growing folk revival, folklorists Ralph Rinzler and Eugene Earle came south to record Ashley, and heard Doc Watson in the process. These sessions resulted in Doc's first recordings, Old-Time Music at Clarence Ashley's. In 1961 the Friends of Old-Time Music invited Doc, Ashley, Clint Howard and Fred Price to perform at a now-legendary concert in New York City, and one year later Doc gave his first solo performance at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village. From then on, he was a full-time professional, playing a wide range of concerts, clubs, colleges and festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall. In the late 1960s, Doc was joined on the road by his son Merle, who provided both musical and emotional companionship; with Merle playing guitar and banjo and serving as partner and driver, the father-son team expanded their audience nationwide. Sadly, Merle died in 1985 from a tractor accident. A series of over 50 remarkable recordings, including collaborations with Flatt & Scruggs, Chet Atkins and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, helped make Doc the gold standard among traditional pickers. Doc passed away in 2012. He was 89.
