Expressing the Self - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Expressing the Self - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book addresses different linguistic and philosophical aspects of referring to the self in a wide range of languages from different language families, including Amharic, English, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Newari (Sino-Tibetan), Polish, Tariana (Arawak), and Thai. In the domain of speaking about oneself, languages use a myriad of expressions that cut across grammatical and semantic categories, as well as a wide variety of constructions. Languages of Southeast and East Asia famously employ a great number of terms for first person reference to signal honorification. The number and mixed properties of these terms make them debatable candidates for pronounhood, with many grammar-driven classifications opting to classify them with nouns. Some languages make use of egophors or logophors, and many exhibit an interaction between expressing the self and expressing evidentiality qua the epistemic status of information held from the ego perspective. The volume''s focus on expressing the self, however, is not directly motivated by an interest in the grammar or lexicon, but instead stems from philosophical discussions on the special status of thoughts about oneself, known as de se thoughts. It is this interdisciplinary understanding of expressing the self that underlies this volume, comprising philosophy of mind at one end of the spectrum and cross-cultural pragmatics of self-expression at the other. This unprecedented juxtaposition results in a novel method of approaching de se and de se expressions, in which research methods from linguistics and philosophy inform each other. The importance of this interdisciplinary perspective on expressing the self cannot be overemphasized. Crucially, the volume also demonstrates that linguistic research on first-person reference makes a valuable contribution to research on the self tout court, by exploring the ways in which the self is expressed, and thereby adding to the insights gained through philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science.

Sexual Offences Referencer Digital Pack - Hhj Patricia Lees - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Sexual Offences Referencer Digital Pack - Hhj Patricia Lees - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Companion website: www.oup.com/LeesLaws3e An easy to follow guide and referencer which contains all the technical information needed in sexual offences cases. The law in this area has expanded greatly in recent decades; many ''historic'' cases are currently tried under the law existing at the time the offence was committed (and, if the abuse was lengthy, this will often straddle several pieces of legislation). Current editions of legal textbooks do not include the old laws that these historic cases fall under, so practitioners have to resort to a mix of old editions and new. This book sets out the correct indictments and sentencing provisions for the different sexual offences dating back to 1943, to cover all cases which might be prosecuted. Anyone looking up a particular offence will find all the necessary technical information in one place. Each chapter sets out an offence (giving its historic and current description) and all that relates to it in terms of indictments and sentence, including current sentencing guidelines and relevant case law. The book also includes model indictments; timelines; the latest material from the Sentencing Council; the Notification Requirements as they have been amended; and specified offences under the Criminal Justice Act 2003.This product includes a copy of the paperback and a digital version available on PC, Mac, Android devices, iPad, or iPhone for quick and easy access wherever you are.

The Sociology of Speed - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Sociology of Speed - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

There is a widespread perception that life is faster than it used to be. We hear constant laments that we live too fast, that time is scarce, and that the pace of everyday life is spiraling out of our control. The iconic image that abounds is that of the frenetic, technologically tethered, iPhone/iPad-addicted citizen. Yet weren''t modern machines supposed to save, and thereby free up, time? The purpose of this book is to bring a much-needed sociological perspective to bear on speed: it examines how speed and acceleration came to signify the zeitgeist, and explores the political implications of this. Among the major questions addressed are: when did acceleration become the primary rationale for technological innovation and the key measure of social progress? Is acceleration occurring across all sectors of society and all aspects of life, or are some groups able to mobilise speed as a resource while others are marginalised and excluded? Does the growing centrality of technological mediations (of both information and communication) produce slower as well as faster times, waiting as well as ''busyness'', stasis as well as mobility? To what extent is the contemporary imperative of speed as much a cultural artefact as a material one? To make sense of everyday life in the twenty-first century, we must begin by interrogating the social dynamics of speed. This book shows how time is a collective accomplishment, and that temporality is experienced very differently by diverse groups of people, especially between the affluent and those who service them.

Freedom and Self-Creation - Katherin A. (university Of Delaware) Rogers - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Freedom and Self-Creation - Katherin A. (university Of Delaware) Rogers - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Katherin A. Rogers presents a new theory of free will, based on the thought of Anselm of Canterbury. We did not originally produce ourselves. Yet, according to Anselm, we can engage in self-creation, freely and responsibly forming our characters by choosing ''from ourselves'' (a se) between open options. Anselm introduces a new, agent-causal libertarianism which is parsimonious in that, unlike other agent-causal theories, it does not appeal to any unique and mysterious powers to explain how the free agent chooses. After setting out Anselm''s original theory, Rogers defends and develops it by addressing a series of standard problems levelled against libertarianism. These include the problem of ''internalism--in that an agent is not the source of his original motivations, how can the structure of his choice ground his responsibility?; the problem of Frankfurt-style counterexamples--Do we really need open options to choose freely?; and the problem of luck--If nothing about an agent before he chooses explains his choice, then isn''t the choice just dumb luck? (The Anselmian answer to this perennial criticism is especially innovative, proposing that the critic has the relationship between choices and character exactly backwards.) Finally, as a theory about self-creation, Anselmian Libertarianism must defend the tracing thesis, the claim that an agent can be responsible for character-determined choices, if he, himself, formed his character through earlier a se choices. Throughout, the book defends and exemplifies a new methodological suggestion: someone debating free will ought to make his background world view explicit. In the on-going debate over the possibility of human freedom and responsibility, Anselmian Libertarianism constitutes a new and plausible approach.

Truth, Fiction, and Literature - Stein Haugom Olsen - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book examines the complex and varied ways in which fictions relate to the real world, and offers a precise account of how imaginative works of literature can use fictional content to explore matters of universal human interest. While rejecting the traditional view that literature is important for the truths that it imparts, the authors also reject attempts to cut off literature altogether from real human concerns. Their detailed account of fictionality, mimesis, and cognitive value helps restore to literature its distinctive status among cultural practices. The authors also explore the limits of fictionality, particularly in relation to metaphysical and sceptical views, prevalent in modern thought, according to which the world itself is a kind of fiction, and truth no more than a cultural construct. They identify different conceptions of fiction in science, logic, epistemology, and make-believe, and thereby challenge the idea that discourse per se is fictional and that different modes of discourse are at root indistinguishable. They offer rigorous analyses of the roles of narrative, imagination, metaphor, and ''making'' in human thought processes. Both in their methods and in their conclusions, Lamarque and Olsen aim to bring much-needed rigour and clarity to debates about the values of literature, and to provide new, philosophically sound foundations for a genuine change of direction in literary theorizing.

Moonlighting - Nathan (senior Lecturer In Early Twentieth Century And Modernist Literature Waddell - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Moonlighting - Nathan (senior Lecturer In Early Twentieth Century And Modernist Literature Waddell - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

How and why did the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) matter to experimental writers in the early twentieth century? Previous answers to this question have tended to focus on structural analogies between musical works and literary texts, charting the many different ways in which poetry and prose resemble Beethoven''s compositions. This book takes a different approach. It focuses on how early twentieth-century writers--chief among them E. M. Forster, Aldous Huxley, Wyndham Lewis, Dorothy Richardson, Rebecca West, and Virginia Woolf--profited from the representational conventions associated in the nineteenth century and beyond with Beethovenian culture. The emphasis of Moonlighting falls for the most part on how modernist writers made use of Beethovenian legend. It is concerned neither with formal similarities between Beethoven''s music and modernist writing nor with the music of Beethoven per se, but with certain ways of understanding Beethoven''s music which had long before 1900 taken shape as habit, myth, cliché, and fantasy, and with the influence they had on experimental writing up to 1930. Moonlighting suggests that the modernists drew knowingly and creatively on the conventional. It proposes that many of the most experimental works of modernist literature were shaped by a knowing reliance on Beethovenian consensus; in short, that the literary modernists knew Beethovenian legend when they saw it, and that they were eager to use it.
