Remote and Hybrid Work - Barbara Z. Larson - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In Remote and Hybrid Work: What Everyone Needs to Know®, long-time remote work scholar and consultant Barbara Z. Larson provides an accessible and critical resource for understanding the remote and virtual workplace, and how to lead in this new work environment. Remote and hybrid work have become defining features of the twenty-first century workplace, and affect almost all of us, including those who work daily in the office. As many people discover the benefits and challenges of working from home, co-workers are contending with emptier offices and virtual teams, managers are learning how to lead from a distance, and businesses and governments are working through the policy implications of a new model of work.In Remote and Hybrid Work: What Everyone Needs to Know®, Barbara Z. Larson addresses key questions regarding the contemporary workplace: what is the difference between virtual work and remote work? How common is remote work, and what changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic? Is there a particular type of person who is better suited for remote work? What are the effects of using technology to monitor remote workers? What are the societal benefits and costs of remote work? What has happened to companies that have tried to go fully remote, with no offices at all? Larson looks carefully into the challenges and opportunities that people and companies face today as work changes. Chapters address the issues that vital stakeholders experience in remote-work environments, including the remote worker, remote teams, managers of remote workers, and companies with remote workforces. Larson also incorporates real-world examples to illustrate key points and demonstrate best practices. Readers will learn from more than thirty years of extensive research by scholars in the areas of applied psychology, organizational behavior, computer-mediated communication, and organizational economics. Killing by Remote Control - Jeff Mcmahan - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Killing by Remote Control - Jeff Mcmahan - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The increased military employment of remotely operated aerial vehicles, also known as drones, has raised a wide variety of important ethical questions, concerns, and challenges. Many of these have not yet received the serious scholarly examination such worries rightly demand. This volume attempts to fill that gap through sustained analysis of a wide range of specific moral issues that arise from this new form of killing by remote control. Many, for example, are troubled by the impact that killing through the mediated mechanisms of a drone half a world away has on the pilots who fly them. What happens to concepts such as bravery and courage when a war-fighter controlling a drone is never exposed to any physical danger? This dramatic shift in risk also creates conditions of extreme asymmetry between those who wage war and those they fight. What are the moral implications of such asymmetry on the military that employs such drones and the broader questions for war and a hope for peace in the world going forward? How does this technology impact the likely successes of counter-insurgency operations or humanitarian interventions? Does not such weaponry run the risk of making war too easy to wage and tempt policy makers into killing when other more difficult means should be undertaken? Killing By Remote Control directly engages all of these issues. Some essays discuss the just war tradition and explore whether the rise of drones necessitates a shift in the ways we think about the ethics of war in the broadest sense. Others scrutinize more specific uses of drones, such as their present use in what are known as "targeted killing" by the United States. The book similarly tackles the looming prospect of autonomous drones and the many serious moral misgivings such a future portends."A path-breaking volume! BJ Strawser, an internationally known analyst of drone ethics, has assembled a broad spectrum of civilian and military experts to create the first book devoted to this hot-button issue. This important work represents vanguard thinking on weapon systems that make headlines nearly every day. It will catalyze debates policy-makers and military leaders must have in order to preserve peace and protect the innocent. - James Cook, Department Chair/Head of Philosophy, US Air Force Academy "The use of ''drones'' (remotely piloted air vehicles) in war has grown exponentially in recent years. Clearly, this evolution presages an enormous explosion of robotic vehicles in war - in the air, on the ground, and on and under the sea. This collection of essays provides an invaluable contribution to what promises to be one of the most fundamental challenges to our assumptions about ethics and warfare in at least the last century. The authors in this anthology approach the ethical challenges posed by these rapidly advancing technologies from a wide range of perspectives. Cumulatively, they represent an essential overview of the fundamental ethical issues involved in their development. This collection makes a key contribution to an urgently needed dialogue about the moral questions involved." - Martin L. Cook, Adm. James B. Stockdale Professor of Professional Military Ethics, Professor Leadership & Ethics, College of Operational & Strategic Leadership, U.S. Naval War College

Digital Domesticity - Martin Gibbs - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Digital Domesticity - Martin Gibbs - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

At the turn of the twenty-first century, typical households were equipped with a landline telephone, a desktop computer connected to a dial-up modem, and a shared television set. Television, radio and newspapers were the dominant mass media. Today, homes are now network hubs for all manner of digital technologies, from mobile devices littering lounge rooms to Bluetooth toothbrushes in bathrooms--and tomorrow, these too will be replaced with objects once inconceivable. Tracing the origins of these digital developments, Jenny Kennedy, Michael Arnold, Martin Gibbs, Bjorn Nansen, and Rowan Wilken advance media domestication research through an ecology-based approach to the abundance and materiality of media in the home. The book locates digital domesticity through phases of adoption and dwelling, to management and housekeeping, to obsolescence and disposal. The authors synthesize household interviews, technology tours, remote data collection via mobile applications, and more to offer readers groundbreaking insight into domestic media consumption. Chapters use original case studies to empirically trace the adoption, use, and disposal of technology by individuals and families within their homes. The book unearths social and material accounts of media technologies, offering insight into family negotiations regarding technology usage in such a way that puts technology in the context of recent developments of digital infrastructure, devices, and software--all of which are now woven into the domestic fabric of the modern household.

Refuge beyond Reach - David Scott Fitzgerald - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Media pundits, politicians, and the public are often skeptical or ambivalent about granting asylum. They fear that asylum-seekers will impose economic and cultural costs and pose security threats to nationals. Consequently, governments of rich, democratic countries attempt to limit who can approach their borders, which often leads to refugees breaking immigration laws. In Refuge beyond Reach, David Scott FitzGerald traces how rich democracies have deliberately and systematically shut down most legal paths to safety. Drawing on official government documents, information obtained via WikiLeaks, and interviews with asylum seekers, he finds that for ninety-nine percent of refugees, the only way to find safety in one of the prosperous democracies of the Global North is to reach its territory and then ask for asylum. FitzGerald shows how the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia comply with the letter of law while violating the spirit of those laws through a range of deterrence methods -- first designed to keep out Jews fleeing the Nazis -- that have now evolved into a pervasive global system of "remote control." While some of the most draconian remote control practices continue in secret, Fitzgerald identifies some pressure points and finds that a diffuse humanitarian obligation to help those in need is more difficult for governments to evade than the law alone.Refuge beyond Reach addresses one of the world''s most pressing challenges -- how to manage flows of refugees and other types of migrants -- and helps to identify the conditions under which individuals can access the protection of their universal rights.

The Alice Behind Wonderland - Simon Winchester - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In the summer of 1858, in a garden behind Christ Church in Oxford, Charles Dodgson--better known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll--dressed the six-year-old Alice Liddell in ragamuffin''s clothes, draped the folds of cloth low enough to expose her bare chest, asked her to look deep into his eyes--and then snapped the camera''s shutter. In The Alice Behind Wonderland, Simon Winchester uses the famous photograph of Alice--notorious for the child''s alluring pose--as the launching pad for an energetic and penetrating look at the inspiration behind, and the making of, one of the greatest classics of children''s literature: Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland. Indeed, Winchester shows that it was Dodgson''s photographic love affair with Alice that transformed this shy and half-deaf mathematician into one of the world''s best-loved writers. Equally important, this photograph offers a window into Dodgson''s troubled Victorian''s mind and soul; it is a picture imbued with more meaning than its appearance would suggest. Much like the fictional Alice''s world, as the photograph is subject to closer examination, it becomes nothing short of curiouser and curiouser. Alice Liddell as The Beggar Maid was, in short, the muse that would inspire the creation of Alice in Wonderland. Deftly engaging with Dogson''s published writings, private diaries, and photography, Winchester weaves together the poignant, turbulent, and entirely fascinating story behind Lewis Carroll and the making of his Alice.

Gays on Broadway - Ethan (independent Scholar) Mordden - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

A fascinating look at the gay and lesbian influence on the American stage by an internationally-recognized authority on the topicFrom the genteel female impersonators of the 1910s to the raucous drag queens of La Cage Aux Folles, from the men of The Normal Heart to the women of Fun Home, and from Eva Le Gallienne and Tallulah Bankhead to Tennessee Williams and Nathan Lane, Gays On Broadway deftly chronicles the plays and people that brought gay culture to Broadway.Writing with his customary verve and wit, author Ethan Mordden follows the steady liberation of gay themes on the American stage. The story begins in the early twentieth century, when gay characters were virtually banned from productions. The 1920s saw a flurry of plays closed on moral grounds as well as the Wales Padlock Act, which forbade representation of “sex degeneracy”. While authorities made consistent attempts to shutter the movement, the public remained curious, and after a few decades of war making, a truce broke out when The Boys In the Band became a national smash hit. From this point on, gay theatre proved simply too popular to abolish. With this change, theatre was graced with a host of unforgettable characters - from thrill killers to historical figures to drag performers, as well as professional gays (such as the defiantly effeminate window dresser in Kiss of the Spider Woman), closeted gays, and those run-of-the-mill citizens who don''t reside entirely within the colorful nonconformist identity (such as the two male lovers in the dinner-theatre comedy Norman, Is That You?).Spoken plays and musicals, playwrights, directors, and actors all played their part in popularizing the gay movement through art. Gays on Broadway is an essential chronological review of the long journey to bring the culture of gay men and women onto the American stage.
