Pattern Breakers - Mike Maples Jr - Bog - Pan Macmillan - Plusbog.dk

‘The most important start-up book of the last ten years’ – Steve Blank, co-creator of the Lean Start-up movement Based on extensive research and real-world examples, Pattern Breakers upends accepted wisdom about how to achieve breakthrough success, and provides a playbook for anyone launching a start-up or creating a new product. Pattern Breakers had its roots in the time when Mike Maples, a seasoned venture capitalist, was stumped, unable to get a grip on why some businesses he funded – X (formerly Twitter), Twitch and Okta, for example – took off, while others considered likely to succeed shut their doors despite seemingly doing everything right. Was it dumb luck that separated gold from dross? What Maples and Stanford University’s Peter Ziebelman discovered contradicts accepted wisdom and upends today’s formulaic approach to entrepreneurship. They learned that pattern-breaking ideas radically change the traditional rules, and are driven by people with the independent-mindedness and courage to divert from the consensus. With intriguing and entertaining storytelling based on a lifetime of experience, Pattern Breakers vividly illustrates what differentiates breakthrough ideas from those that initially seem promising but that meet with mediocre results, and why others that may initially seem unworthy – and even idiotic – end up radically changing how people live. ‘An indispensable guide to start-up success’ – Safi Bahcall, author of Loonshots ‘Reveals how elite founders don’t just navigate uncertainty – they harness it to redefine what’s possible’ – Annie Duke, author of Thinking in Bets

The Seventies Unplugged - Gerard Degroot - Bog - Pan Macmillan - Plusbog.dk

If the 1960s was the decade of peace, love and understanding, the 1970s was the decade of glitter and glam rock. Or was it? Gerard DeGroot peels away the polyester to examine what really happened in a decade that began with the death of Jimi Hendrix and ended with Ronald Reagan in the White House and Margaret Thatcher in 10 Downing Street. Some commentators have written off the Seventies as a period in which nothing happened, yet politically it was a time of great hope. Dictatorial regimes ended in Portugal, Spain, Nicaragua, Rhodesia and Greece. Accord between nations was established at Camp David, Peking, Moscow, Geneva and Brussels. For feminists, environmentalists and homosexuals, the Seventies was the decade of hope. In cultural terms, it brought the Sydney Opera House, Monty Python, Annie Hall , David Hockney and M.A.S.H . The music, with or without ABBA, was simply brilliant. But it was also a time of quite extraordinary violence and as the decade continued, the bloodshed and the hate came to dominate, whether in Jonestown, Belfast, Palestine or Cambodia. And while the violence of nations is a constant throughout history, in the 1970s ordinary people seemed to surrender to violence with frightening ease. As the Sixties chickens came home to roost, the Seventies became an era when dreams died, hope was thwarted, problems long ignored finally exploded, and optimism repeatedly crushed gave way to frustration. Incisive, iconoclastic and hugely entertaining The Seventies Unplugged is popular history at its best.

The Crystal Bucket - Clive James - Bog - Pan Macmillan - Plusbog.dk

Following Visions Before Midnight , The Crystal Bucket is another hilarious time-capsule of 1970s television – the second collection of Clive James''s ruthlessly funny, inimitable columns dissecting the entertainment of the day.''One of the few columnists who makes you laugh aloud'' – Melvyn Bragg, Sunday Times In many ways, the 1970s were a dark time for Britain – a time of struggle, deepening divisions and Christmas with the Osmonds . Clive James, the man who made TV criticism an entertainment in its own right, provided the relief. By turns insightful and hilarious, this collection sees his lens turn to television as diverse as the election of Margaret Thatcher''s Conservative Party, the Silver Jubilee, endless Star Trek reruns, the Frost/Nixon interviews and Charlie''s Angels . ''He is one of the most remarkable figures in British cultural life at the moment: a poet and gifted literary critic who is also genuinely liked by the mass audience'' – London Review of Books The Crystal Bucket collects James''s TV criticism published originally in the Observer between 1976 and 1979. Clive''s TV criticism from 1979 onwards continues in Glued To The Box . Clive James (1939–2019) was a broadcaster, critic, poet, memoirist and novelist. His much-loved, influential and hilarious television criticism is available both in individual volumes, of which this is the second, and collected in a single volume in Clive James On Television . Praise for Clive James:''There can''t be many writers of my generation who haven''t been heavily influenced by Clive James'' – Charlie Brooker''A wonderfully witty and intelligent writer'' – Verity Lambert''The perfect critic'' – A.O. Scott, New York Times
