Modelling Infrastructure Investments, Growth and Poverty Impact - Clemens Breisinger - Bog - Peter Lang AG - Plusbog.dk

Evaluation pro-poor growth enhancing investments in infrastructure and rural development requires comprehensive appraisal tools. Traditional methods have taken a project or sector perspective that did not capture economy-wide effects. However, in addition to inter-sectoral effects, large-scale investments can also have long-term impacts on national capital formation, the government budget and the foreign trade balance. This study builds a computable general equilibrium model and links it to a micro-accounting module for poverty analysis in Vietnam. The spatial dimension is captured by incorporating two regions into the model: the lagging mountainous province of Son La is compared to the rest of Vietnam. This model is applied to several infrastructure investments and identifies economic growth rates that would be needed to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal.

A central and unresolved issue in modern manufacturing remains the economics of speed. This thesis addresses this issue by critically examining the introduction of the just-in-time concept in the chemical-pharmaceutical industry. To this end, it develops a framework for assessing the impact of JIT and then applies it to an actual case in the industry. This framework consists of two complementary methods: ProfiSEE - a novel and successful workbench for visual interactive simulation modeling, and QED - a rough-cut financial model. The outstanding feature of QED is that it translates common measures of speed into measures of financial performance such as ROA. A comparative analysis of a classical capacity-oriented operation and its JIT counterpart provides important insights into the impact of managerial decisions and external factors on these measures of business performance. We learn why manufacturing strategies should focus on speed and time-based criteria.

Empirical studies presented in this book are based on a large panel data set and model the impact of concentrated ownership on performance, with nonlinear effect shapes being estimated through cubic splines. Tying in with major traditions of ordinary language philosophy, the author presents an account of practical reasons in social agency that radically challenges the two mainstream accounts of practical reasons, the desire-belief model and the neo-Aristotelian «sub-specie-boni» model of practical reasons. She argues that the traditional focus on instrumental rationality and teleological reasoning ignores important types of non-purposive and agent-related reasons that play a major role in rule-based context of social agency and reciprocal interaction. This study proposes an epistemological model on the basis of a streamlined and heavily modified German Idealism. With an analytical focus on the French Second Empire, the underlying research question is rather straightforward: how is knowledge created in material modernity? Using my epistemological model as a methodology for cultural criticism, a second research question emerges: how does the creation of knowledge in material modernity affect human existence? In this context, my argument revolves around the work of Charles Baudelaire, who, as the first poet of modernity, serves as a cultural-critical gateway. I conclude that the specific conditions of material modernity eventually produce an epistemological darkness ultimately leading to fatalism in the guise of a materialist teleology.

This book addresses the relevance of institutional arrangements in East Asian developmental states for the Central Asian countries. It is argued that the Central Asian transition countries share crucial similarities with the economies of East Asia. By a detailed analysis of historical developments in Northeast and Southeast Asia, a coherent and comprehensive model of the developmental state on the basis of the New Institutional Economics is developed in this book. This model is applied to Central Asia by a comparative study on the basis of semi-structured interviews that were carried out in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Both Central Asian countries show notable similarities but also crucial differences to the East Asian developmental states.
