The main purpose of the book is to describe the two linguistic-cultural phenomena arising from mass emigration of Mexicans to Los Angeles: Spanish-English bilingualism and Spanglish. The main thesis of the research is the correlation between Spanish-English bilingualism and Spanglish. As public opinion deemed Spanglish as a blocker for linguistic advancement or degraded Spanish, it is actually a method of enhancing the linguistic system. That is why, not only does the research contest the use of such terms, but it also argues that bilingualism is a much more compound and adequate term as well as an analytic framework for the study of bilingual productions. Spanglish should be understood as a form of bilingualism, a hybrid enriching the linguistic system.

By means of a South African comic – Bitterkomix – this study deals with two current debates in Cultural Anthropology: Visual Culture and Indigenous Ethnography. Bitterkomix is a comic anthology which criticises and subverts the Afrikaans culture from within. The main contributors – Afrikaner themselves – do so mostly in the fields of sexuality, racism, religious and cultural bigotry and the use of Afrikaans as the ideological and psychological connection of the Boers. In Visual Culture the producer and the recipient are in close correlation, therefore the editors are looked at as such – recipients and producers of comics and thereby culture. Their ethnographic comics about childhood, sexuality, conscription and identity through language are treated as a self-reflecting project, and so this book is able to contribute in an extraordinary way as an indigenous ethnography of the Boers.

The Gravitational Pull Hypothesis is an attempt to provide a cognitive account for features of translated language. It assumes that translated and non-translated texts in the same language exhibit distributional differences that can be regarded as translational effects. This book presents a number of studies aiming to test that hypothesis on five linguistic items: passive construal of events, diminution, verbal aspect, light verb constructions and adjective position. The studies draw on data from the COVALT corpus as well as elicitation and translation tasks performed by professional translators. The results shed light not only on the hypothesis itself but also on the mixed-methods approach adopted in the book.

Upāsaka / upāsikā is hence seen as the non-monastic follower, who, having experienced the significance of dhamma and the superiority of the Buddha, has the trust in the goal and spiritual path that the Buddha has shown. In this connection, Buddhist community is the assembly of the followers, monastic and non-monastic alike, sharing the same common ground and following the spiritual path in pursuit of individual liberation, which in tandem contributes to perpetuation of the community.

This monograph presents Old English renderings of Christian words found in interlinear glosses, especially the Gospels and the Psalter glosses. Nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs in biblical contexts are included through dialectal (Northumbrian, Mercian, and West Saxon) diachronic (early and late West Saxon) and idiolectal (i.e. scribal) comparison. By using interlinear glosses, the correspondence between the original Latin word and the Old English rendering can be recognised more clearly than in ordinary prose, and at the same time, a flexible choice of renderings can be seen in some contexts. The author shows which Old English words were chosen as renderings, while some Latin words were accepted without translation.

This study examines the emphases which are included in formal curricula texts and those which are included in teacher-made tasks. In a second step, this study examines the strategies with which students may process and combine elements from the three emphases of content, orientation and methods. The results provide insight into what strategies the students use and how they process the relationship between historical knowledge, historical methods and historical orientation.

Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus was first published in 1818. A year before Hoffmann’s novella Der Sandmann was published in the first of the two volumes of his Nachtstücke . A major theme for Mary Shelley and E.T.A. Hoffmann and a hitherto neglected aspect of academic research is the question of madness, in Frankenstein and Der Sandmann. Both texts represent certain features shared by the Romantic movements in Germany and England, such as an ironic stance towards Romanticism itself, its Prometheanism, or its indulgence in the occult. At the same time both authors criticise the Enlightenment project more than they do celebrate the idea of progress. The first two chapters of this study stress the contrastive approaches of Hoffmann and Mary Shelley in their explorations of madness. The rest of this analysis emphasises the similarities of mythological, cultural and linguistic contexts within which Mary Shelley and Hoffmann settle their preoccupation with madness. This study aims at finding out whether insanity is an illness of the isolated individual, or whether society is sick itself. Is insanity related to the body or the mind? Is it an image for the crisis of representation in postrevolutionary Romanticism?

Given the catastrophic history of the ‘short 20th century’ (Hobsbawm), the crucial question facing the new millennium – all over the world – is that of the future social as well as political development. At the centre of our engagement with this question should lie reflections on participatory forms of democratisation in as many societies around the globe as possible, so as to make globalisation more than simply an economic theme. Such reflections – as the contributions in this book show – from this perspective would also examine the possible ways in which relations might be constituted within political socialisation, participation and education. These concepts are in turn to be explored in the substantive discussions of ‘democracy’ and ‘democratisation’ in relation to individuals as well as political systems. The study demonstrates in detail how Białoszewski’s radical approach to poetry evolves into a consistent life-writing and life-philosophy (life-writing-philosophy). Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770) made history both as an outstanding composer and as an exceptional music theorist.
