A Case For Mixed-Audience with Reference to the Warning Passages in the Book of Hebrews - C. Adrian Thomas - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc -

A Case for Mixed-Audience with Reference to the Warning Passages in the Book of Hebrews discusses the nature of the warnings in Hebrews and how these warnings relate to the theological question of the eternal security of believers. The main argument is that these warnings are intended to target a particular segment of the author’s community, about whose appropriation of and subsequent attitude toward the Christian message he was deeply concerned. That is to say, while the book of Hebrews is addressed as a message of encouragement to the community as a whole, its warnings are aimed at a certain element in the community whose salvation is threatened by a possible dangerous course of action. The book implies that while the author is persuaded that the majority in the community are genuine believers, there are some about whose salvation he doubts; hence the «case for a mixed-audience». What is threatened, therefore, is not a salvation already possessed, but the salvation of those in danger of coming up short. Theologically, the work falls within the sphere of the Calvinistic-Arminian debate regarding the assurance of salvation and the perseverance of the saints. It argues strongly for the Calvinistic position, but does so within the confines of the discipline of biblical studies, and lends extensive exegetical support to the Calvinistic position on the warning passages. The book is highly recommended for Bible College and seminary students and professors, as well as pastors and lay leaders who must give answers to their parishoners on those tough warning passages in Hebrews.

Fake News - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

In this dizzying post-truth, post-fact, fake news era, the onslaught and speed of potentially untrue, incorrect, or fabricated information (some crafted and weaponized, some carelessly shared) can cause a loss of our intellectual bearings. If we fail to have a common truthful basis for discussions of opinion and policy, the integrity of our democracy is at risk. This up-to-date anthology is designed to provide a survey of technological, ethical, and legal issues raised by falsehoods, particularly social media misinformation. The volume explores visual and data dissemination, business practices, international perspectives, and case studies. With misinformation and misleading information being propagated using a variety of media such as memes, data, charts, photos, tweets, posts, and articles, an understanding of the theory, mechanisms, and changing communication landscape is essential to move in the right direction with academic, industry, and government initiatives to inoculate ourselves from the dangers of fake news. The book takes an international and multidisciplinary approach with contributions from media studies, journalism, computer science, the law, and communication, making it distinct among books on fake news. This book is essential for graduate or undergraduate students in courses dealing with fake news and communication studies. Relevant courses include media studies, journalism, public relations, media ethics, media law, social media, First Amendment law, philosophy, and political science.

Evolution of the Early Qur’an - Daniel Beck - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Evolution of the Early Qur’an - Daniel Beck - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Critical scholarship on the Qur’ān and early Islam has neglected the enigmatic earliest surahs. Advocating a more evolutionary analytical method, this book argues that the basal surahs are logical, clear, and intelligible compositions. The analysis systematically elucidates the apocalyptic context of the Qur’ān’s most archaic layers. Decisive new explanations are given for classic problems such as what the surah of the elephant means, why an anonymous man is said to frown and turn away from a blind man, why the prophet is summoned as one who wraps or cloaks himself, and what the surah of the qadr refers to. Grounded in contemporary context, the analysis avoids reducing these innovative recitations to Islamic, Jewish, or Christian models. By capitalizing on recent advances in fields such as Arabian epigraphy, historical linguistics, Manichaean studies, and Sasanian history, a very different picture of the early quranic milieu emerges. This picture challenges prevailing critical and traditional models alike. Against the view that quranic revelation was a protracted process, the analysis suggests a more compressed timeframe, in which Mecca played relatively little role. The analysis further demonstrates that the earliest surahs were already intimately connected to the progression of the era’s cataclysmic Byzantine-Sasanian war. All scholars interested in the Qur’ān, early Islam, late antique history, and the apocalyptic genre will be interested in the book’s dynamic new approach to resolving intractable problems in these areas.

Raymond Aron and His Dialogues in an Age of Ideologies - Nathan Orlando - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Raymond Aron and His Dialogues in an Age of Ideologies - Nathan Orlando - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Raymond Aron and His Dialogues in an Age of Ideologies examines the thought and rhetoric of one of the most interesting yet underappreciated thinkers of the twentieth century. This book investigates Raymond Aron’s conversations on politics during the Cold War with well-known contemporaries Jean-Paul Sartre, Friedrich Hayek, and Charles de Gaulle. Through these dialogues on the subjects of Marxism, freedom, and nationalism, we see the prudence of Aron’s politics of understanding as well as the emphasis he places on and virtue he demonstrates in public discourse. Aron shows us not only how to think politically but also how to engage in constructive public debate. He stands as a model for us to emulate in our own age of ideologies. "In this lucid, thoughtful and elegantly written work, Nathan Orlando highlights the toughminded moderation and dialogic wisdom of the great twentieth century French political thinker Raymond Aron. Whether responding to Jean-Paul Sartre’s incoherent efforts to merge existentialism and Marxism, authenticity and terror, or Friedrich Hayek’s thoughtful and humane, if too doctrinaire, defense of the ‘constitution of liberty,’ Aron embodied high prudence at work in the great drama of the twentieth century. And in his qualified admiration for the person and statecraft of Charles de Gaulle, Aron admirably demonstrated how moderation and political responsibility can and should fit together. Nathan Orlando is to be commended for bringing Aron’s model of humane and balanced political judgment to life once again." —Daniel J. Mahoney, Professor Emeritus at Assumption University and Author of The Liberal Political Science of Raymond Aron "In an era marked by ideological fanaticism and intellectual folly, Raymond Aron exemplified political wisdom—the ancient virtue of prudence. Nathan Orlando’s important book—itself filled with prudential judgment—exhibits mastery of Aron’s vast body of work, using the French thinker’s dialogues with Friedrich Hayek, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Charles de Gaulle as a way of illumining fundamental questions of political life. Orlando’s study provides an ideal introduction to Aron’s thought." —Brian C. Anderson, Editor of City Journal and Author of Raymond Aron: The Recovery of the Political and other books "In Raymond Aron and His Dialogues in an Age of Ideologies , Nathan Orlando draws an original and compelling sketch of how the philosophical became the personal in the life and work of Raymond Aron. More specifically, Orlando puts flesh and bones on Aron’s concept of prudence and illustrates the ways in which prudence was a lodestar in Aron’s political and personal life, allowing him to navigate not only current events but the challenging personalities of friends and critics such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Friedrich Hayek, and Charles de Gaulle. Raymond Aron and His Dialogues is a heroic accomplishment and a wonderful addition to the burgeoning literature on Raymond Aron." —Reed Davis, Professor Emeritus at Seattle Pacific University and Author of A Politics of Understanding: The International Thought of Raymond Aron

Origen and Hellenism - Panayiotis Tzamalikos - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Origen and Hellenism - Panayiotis Tzamalikos - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book elucidates and engages in critical discussion of the Greek philosophical background to the work of Origen, the great third-century scholar and theologian. The author, Professor Panayiotis Tzamalikos, has long argued that Origen was in many respects an anti-Platonist, and that the clauses in Origen’s official anathematisation in AD 553 were based on misreadings by unschooled and fanatical drumbeaters. Tzamalikos has refuted those charges and demonstrated that they had nothing to do with Origen’s real thought. Origen and Hellenism continues the argument by placing Origen’s achievement in its correct context: Origen may have forsaken his ancestral religion and converted to Christianity when he was advanced in years, but he implicitly made much use of his Greek intellectual inheritance in composing his ground-breaking theological work, which paved the way to Nicaea. The author’s thesis is that, in the quest to discover the real Origen, scrutiny of this background is vital. In the history of philosophy, Origen is uncategorisable as an author: his thought constitutes an unexampled chapter of its own, revealing a perfect match between Christian exegesis and Greek philosophy, which gave later episcopal orthodoxy the gravamen of its anti-Arian doctrine. * * * “The author presents Origen’s thought as a completely original contribution to ancient philosophy and Christian theology at the same time. He shows convincingly that the classification of Origen as ‘Christian Platonist’ obscures rather that clarifies, since Origen took a critical stance towards several aspects of Platonism. In doing so, the author is able to free Origen’s intellectual profile, on the one hand, from distortion of Eusebius of Caesarea, and, on the other hand, from the clichés of the anti-Origenist polemics in late antiquity, especially in the fifth ecumenical council. With the liberation of Origen from the prison of his often ill-informed theological reception, the author makes an outstanding contribution to research, which in any case should be listened to not only in the field of theology, but also in the field of the history of ancient philosophy.” —Martin Illert, Prof. Dr. University of Halle, Germany * * * “No-one acquainted with current scholarship on Origen will fail to recognise the author of this book, not only on account of its length and the vigour of its style, but because Tzamalikos has no rival in erudition or in the fecundity of his ideas. None of his critics (least of all those who accuse him of disparaging Greek philosophy) will be able to produce the range of quotations from two millennia of Greek literature that Tzamalikos can marshal in support of every one of his conclusions, and few of them will be able to match his conceptual subtlety or his tenacity in exegesis. Since he is the one indispensable author writing in English on Origen at the moment, this volume will be especially useful to scholars because, while it introduces a lot of new material, it also recapitulates the arguments of Tzamalikos’ earlier studies, which, famous as they are, do not seem always to have been read in their entirety by his critics.” —Mark Edwards, Professor of Early Christian Studies, University of Oxford

The Curriculum - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The volume provides crucial approaches from leading educators, curriculum theorists, and pedagogues since the emergence of curriculum as a field of studies. It underlines the wrangles within and beyond hegemonic and counter-hegemonic curriculum inquiry exploring the advances, accomplishments, and frustrations of a particular radical critical river of intellectuals—what Paraskeva calls the "generation of utopia"—in the struggle for a just society. "Thanks to a keenly discerning eye, Paraskeva has crafted an essential tool for stepping back and taking epistemological stock of the course the field has taken and the directions in which it is now being steered."— Cathryn Teasley, University of A Coruña, Spain "‘Under one roof’ Paraskeva captures the writings, ruminations, and reflections of germinal authors from what I characterize as the ‘porous’ field of curriculum studies."— Todd, Price National Louis University, USA "Paraskeva strikes again and provides key foundational documents in a volume that should be examined by all educators committed to social and cognitive justice."— James Jupp, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, USA "Paraskeva’s reader is imperative to those unhappy with the current state of the field and who want to know how curriculum theorizing relates to other areas of thinking."— Fatma Mızıkacı, Ankara University, Turkey "João Paraskeva’s edited book offers a wonderfully comprehensive examination of the leading and common means of theorizing knowledge in educational thought."— Anthony Brown, University of Texas, Austin, USA "Paraskeva’s volume provides a powerful understanding of the struggles between hegemonic perspectives and a dispersed counter-hegemonic radical critical river—as he insightfully labeled ‘a generation of utopia’—a river of hope and possibility."— Maria Nikolakaki, University of Peloponnese, Greece

Progressive Education for Democratic Society - Stephen Lafer - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Progressive Education for Democratic Society - Stephen Lafer - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The American educational system, because it is based in behaviorist rather than progressivist philosophy, has not well-served the development of a citizenry capable of effective participation in the democratic decision-making process, the remedy being the progressivist methods described in the later chapters of Progressive Education for Democratic Society . The mistreatment of mind in schools, historically, is intentional, the consequence being the use of curriculum and methods that are intended to inculcate students in a manufactured truth rather than promote the development of critical thinking skills necessary for assessing the truth value of contents. While this emphasis does not educate students to be critically thoughtful participants in the societal decision-making process, it does pave the way for passive acceptance of an unfair and inequitable economic system, its beneficiaries the few and the wealthy while the masses are kept content and relatively subdued. Progressive educational methods are described and promoted as means for the creation of a sane and humane democratic society. These methods are student-centered, the student the creator of meaningful knowledge developed by treating information analytically in order to discover inherent truth value—this, the basis for effective decision-making as an individual and as a member of a democratic society. Freedom and responsibility are the linchpins of a free and, at the same time, humane society, responsibility leading to voluntary curtailment of freedom, enough so that all may enjoy the benefits of a free society. The book discusses issues of proper and improper authority in order to argue for schools in which students know how to benefit from the proper and challenge the improper.

Seeing Species - Debra L. Merskin - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Seeing Species - Debra L. Merskin - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Animals are everywhere. They inhabit our forests, our fields, our imaginations, our dreams, and our stories. Making appearances in advertisements, television programs, movies, books, Internet memes, and art, symbolic animals do tremendous work for us selling goods, services, and ideas, as well as acting as stand-ins for our interests and ideas. Yet, does knowing animals only symbolically impact their lived experiences? Seeing Species: Re-presentations of Animals in Media & Popular Culture examines the use of animals in media, tracking species from appearances in rock art and picture books to contemporary portrayals in television programs and movies. Primary questions explored include: Where does thinking of other beings in a detached, impersonal, and objectified way come from? Do the mass media contribute to this distancing? When did humans first think about animals as other others? Main themes include examining the persistence of the human-animal divide, parallels in the treatment of otherized human beings and animals, and the role of media in either liberating or limiting real animals. This book brings together sociological, psychological, historical, cultural, and environmental ways of thinking about nonhuman animals and our relationships with them. In particular, ecopsychological thinking locates and identifies the connections between how we re-present animals and the impact on their lived experiences in terms of distancing, generating a false sense of intimacy, and stereotyping. Re-presentations of animals are discussed in terms of the role the media do or do not play in perpetuating status quo beliefs about them and their relationship with humans. This includes theories and methods such as phenomenology, semiotics, textual analysis, and pragmatism, with the goal of unpacking re-presentations of animals in order to learn not only what they say about human beings but also how we regard members of other species.

White Jesus - Tabatha L. Jones Jolivet - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

White Jesus - Tabatha L. Jones Jolivet - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

In White Jesus: The Architecture of Racism in Religion and Education , White Jesus is conceived as a socially constructed apparatus—a mythology that animates the architecture of salvation—that operates stealthily as a veneer for patriarchal White supremacist, capitalist, and imperialist sociopolitical, cultural, and economic agendas. White Jesus was constructed by combining empire, colorism, racism, education, and religion; the by-product is a distortion that reproduces violence in epistemic and physical ways. The authors distinguish White Jesus from Jesus of the Gospels, the one whose life, death, and resurrection demands sacrificial love as a response—a love ethic. White Jesus is a fraudulent scheme that many devotees of Jesus of Bethlehem naively fell for. This book is about naming the lies, reclaiming the person of Jesus, and reasserting a vision of power that locates Jesus of the Gospels in solidarity with the easily disposed. The catalytic, animating, and life-altering power of the cross of Jesus is enough to subdue White Jesus and his patronage. White Jesus can be used in a variety of academic disciplines, including education, religion, sociology, and cultural studies. Furthermore, the book will be useful for Christian institutions working to evaluate the images and ideologies of Jesus that shape their biblical ethics, as well as churches in the U.S. that are invested in breaking the mold of homogeneity, civil religion, and uncoupling commitments to patriotism from loyalty to one Kingdom. Educational institutions and religious organizations that are committed to combining justice and diversity efforts with a Jesus ethic will find White Jesus to be a compelling primer.
