Royal Sisters - Anne Edwards - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Royal Sisters - Anne Edwards - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

In Royal Sisters, Anne Edwards, author of the best-selling Vivien Leigh: A Biography and Matriarch: Queen Mary and the House of Windsor, has written the first dual biography of Elizabeth, the princess who was to become Queen, and her younger sister, Margaret, who was to be her subject. From birth to maturity, they were the stuff of which dreams are made. “I’m three and you’re four,” the future Queen, then a child, imperiously informed her sister. The younger girl, not understanding this reference to their position in the succession, proudly countered, “No, you’re not. I’m three, you’re seven.”The royal sisters had no choice in their historic positions, but behind the palace gates and within the all-too-human confines of their personalities, they displayed tremendous individuality and suffered the usual symptoms of sibling rivalry. Royal Sisters provides an unprecedented and intimate portrait of these most famous siblings during their formative and dramatic youthful years. It is also one of the twentieth century’s most fascinating stories of sisterly loyalty. Edwards’s book is an honest look at how the royal sisters feel toward each other, their parents, their close relations and the men whom they have loved. It openly discusses, with new insights and information, the romance of Elizabeth and Philip and the tragic aborted love affair between Margaret and Group Captain Peter Townsend, and it has a cast of characters ranging from the youthful sisters’ suitors to Winston Churchill and the entire Royal Family. It is also the story of the making of a queen, of the high drama of her situation in the Townsend affair, of the real effect their uncle’s abdication had on the sisters’ lives, and of the internecine feuds that have brewed within the Royal Family since that time. Brought vividly to life through the many personal interviews of close royal associates, filled with new facts, previously unpublished anecdotes and photographs, Royal Sisters is a never-before-glimpsed look at the relationship of the Queen and Princess Margaret.

This book is a companion to An Illustrated History of Palm Beach: How Palm Beach Evolved Over 150 Years from Wilderness to Wonderland (Pineapple Press, 2020).This book offers three tours that showcase the history of Palm Beach through its architecture. The tours are arranged in chronological order and are illustrated with historical photographs from the archives of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. Chapter 1 features a driving tour that covers the history of Palm Beach from the Pioneer Era to the present day. The tour spans a distance of 10 miles, going as far north as the Lake Worth Inlet and as far south as Phipps Ocean Park. It also includes three optional walks .Chapter 2 offers a biking tour that follows the length of Lake Trail, which was the only real road on the east side of Lake Worth until Henry Flagler arrived and built his two resort hotels and related infrastructure in the mid-1890s. The tour spans a distance of five miles and is the best way to understand the Pioneer Era of Palm Beach. Chapter 3 features a walking tour that takes you through the midtown business district between Royal Palm Way and Worth Avenue, also known as the Royal Park Addition. This area became the center of Palm Beach during the boom times of the 1920s. All three tours overlap at many points, but the driving tour is the most comprehensive of the three. The tours are a great way to explore the rich history of Palm Beach and appreciate its architectural heritage.

Clash of Crowns - Mary Mcauliffe - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Conflict between England and France was a fact of life for centuries, but few realize that its origins date from the time of the Vikings, when a Norse chieftain named Rollo established himself and his progeny in Normandy. In this compelling and entertaining history, Mary McAuliffe takes the reader back to those dark and turbulent times when Rollo’s descendants, the dukes of Normandy, asserted their dominance over the weak French monarchy—a dominance that became especially threatening after Duke William conquered England in 1066, giving him a royal crown. Despite this crown, William the Conqueror and his royal successors remained dukes of Normandy, with feudal obligations to their overlord, the king of France. This naturally fostered an ongoing hostility between the French and English crowns that, as McAuliffe convincingly shows, became ever more explosive as the strength and territorial holdings of the English monarchs grew. Conflict erupted regularly over the years, and Eleanor of Aquitaine’s desertion of one camp for the other only added fuel to the long-simmering feud. McAuliffe takes the reader back to this dramatic era, providing the fascinating background and context for this “clash of crowns.” She offers colorful insights into Richard Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine as well as lesser-known French and English monarchs, especially Philip II of France. Philip proved a determined opponent of Richard Lionheart, and their cutthroat rivalry not only created fatal divisions within the Third Crusade but also culminated in an incendiary faceoff at Richard’s newly built Château-Gaillard, the seemingly impregnable gateway to empire. The outcome would shape the course of English and French history throughout the centuries that followed.
