Investigative Journalism - William C. Gaines - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Investigative Journalism - William C. Gaines - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Investigative Journalism is a "how-to" primer for beginning investigative journalists. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter William C. Gaines uses a unique case-study method to teach readers what investigative reporting is, why it is important, and how it is practiced. The case studies are punctuated by reflective questions and answers that systematically guide readers through the narrative. This clever pedagogical device mimics the path of a reporter gathering information and working on a story. Readers will get a first-hand, real-life look at investigative journalists doing their job.Recognizing that most instructors involve their students in writing actual stories right away, Investigative Journalism is concise and practical. Gaines reveals many strategies to generate story ideas, choose subjects to investigate, and uncover and sift through information and data. Along with the case study exercises, Investigative Journalism is loaded with specific resources used by practicing reporters, plus chapter-specific assignments for student reporters to launch their own investigations. Each chapter concludes with a chapter summary and class assignments. The cases are based on real investigative stories. Only the names and places have been changed to protect reporters, their sources, and the secrets they have revealed to the author. Students will find these how-to cases widely applicable to the entangled bureaucracies, the free-wheeling local governments, or potential medical insurance fraud scandals they may find in their first jobs in countless cities and towns across the country.

Asian Americans - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"Compared to many existing texts on this subject, which tend to take a rather historical approach, this book focuses on more contemporary Asian experiences. Text Structures From the Masters - Gretchen Bernabei - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Text Structures From the Masters - Gretchen Bernabei - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Gretchen Bernabei asks students to derive possible text structures from examining mentor texts. Instead of that one format students are given—the five-paragraph essay—she gives us fifty, and doesn’t pretend that’s a complete list. She changes the landscape students can work in from one of poverty to one of wonderful excess. She shows us that as writers we are playing a game with lots of moves . —Thomas Newkirk School writing has nothing to do with my life…If that sounds like your students, then you need this book, because it will prove to your students that writing counts in our world— and always has. In Text Structures from the Masters, Gretchen Bernabei and Jennifer Koppe provide 50 short texts by famous Americans who put pen to paper driven by what Peter Elbow described as "an itch" to say something. The book includes Sojourner Truth’s Speech (itch: join a heated debate), FDR’s Pearl Harbor message (itch: pick up the pieces), JFK’s inaugural address (itch: give a pep talk) . . . along with 47 more pieces and their explicit purposes. By examining the structure of these mentor texts, students suddenly see that the itch is something they have in their own lives, too! And the 50 companion lessons invite students to use the text structure of each the famous documents to express that itch. Each 4-page lesson includes: - - A planning sheet that reveals the structure of the mentor text, giving students an X-Ray like device for looking at the piece of writing. - - Brainstorming boxes that invite students to discover their "itchiest" topic - - A method for "kernelizing" their own essay—making an outline of what they will write using the text structure as a guide. - - Student examples of both kernel essays and finished pieces. - - The bonus? Students report the historical document comes to life as they can see textual map that holds it together—and have used that map themselves. - Text Structures from the Masters shows students how writing can help get the work of their lives done. They don’t need to be poised to send someone into the battlefield to have the desire to express something to others—just the itch to say it well.

Discursive Leadership - Gail T Fairhurst - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Discursive Leadership - Gail T Fairhurst - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

2007 National Communication Association, Organizational Communication Division, "Best Book" Award Citing the well known adage that there are as many definitions of leadership as there are leadership scholars, Fairhurst acknowledges the contributions which psychologists have made to leadership research, before probing the inevitable limitations to their formidable body of work. Fairhurst′s work is also thought provoking on the issue of authenticity on the part of leaders." —HUMAN RELATIONS Discursive Leadership: In Conversation with Leadership Psychology presents a new, groundbreaking way for scholars and graduate students to examine and explore leadership. Differing from a psychological approach to leadership which tries to get inside the heads of leaders and employees, author Gail Fairhurst focuses on the social or communicative aspects between them. A discursive approach to leadership introduces a host of relatively new ideas and concepts and helps us understand leadership′s changing role in organizations. Key Features: - Compares and contrasts discursive leadership with leadership psychology: This comparison facilitates a clearer definition of discursive leadership. - Presents new ways to study leadership: By treating each discourse concept as a heuristic device and supporting each concept with examples, new ways to study leadership are introduced by focusing on key concepts from the organizational discourse literature. - Addresses some key challenges within leadership psychology: Each chapter begins with an ongoing debate in leadership psychology and illustrates how a discursive approach can join that debate. Charimatic leadership, leader-member exchange, authentic leadership are just a few of the examples. - Offers reactions from leadership psychologists: Leadership psychologists and other discourse scholars respond to the author′s proposed ′conversation′ between them broadening the debate and introducing new perspectives. - Provides quick reviews and extended examples: The book includes critical summaries at the end of each chapter and easy-to-reference appendices. Intended Audience: This book helps scholars, researchers, and practitioners understand the complexities of leadership as it continues to evolve due to such influences as globalization, technology change, and democratization of the workplace. It is also an excellent text for graduate courses such as Leadership; Rhetoric of Leadership; Interpretive Studies of Organizational Communication; Organizational Communication; and Leadership & Communication in the departments of communication, business & management, psychology, and educational administration.

Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women - Hope Landrine - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women - Hope Landrine - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women is a crucial resource for all therapists who treat women. Not only will the information further the well-being of women clients, but it could literally save lives. Interesting, readable, and well-organized, this book belongs on the shelf next to the DSM-IV. The case examples will grip the reader whether professional or lay audience. --Natalie Porter, Ph.D., California School of Professional Psychology "I am greatly impressed with the book. It is a brand new idea, one that is long overdue." --Hannah Lerman, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, Los Angeles Some clients don′t respond to a therapist′s chosen treatment for a specific mental disorder. Could there be a physical disorder that is causing psychiatric symptoms? How can a therapist distinguish between similar psychiatric and physical disorders to arrive at the correct diagnosis, refer on, and/or suggest appropriate treatment? Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women gives the therapist the foundation for identifying those physiological disorders that may be at the root of the mental problems presented by women clients. Hyperthyroidism, for example, can result in depression and anxiety, and temporal lobe epilepsy can manifest itself with the same symptoms as bipolar disorder. This special guidebook sorts out potential mix-ups by providing detailed cases and illustrations, a quick reference table for checking symptoms, and a glossary. Making technical information clear and concise, the authors cover endocrinological--including thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and parathyroid systems--and brain seizure problems as well as other diseases--such as multiple sclerosis, mitral heart valve prolapse, and lupus erythematosus. They offer a basic overview of the systems and organs involved and focus on how particular malfunctions can result in serious behavioral problems. A guide to providing the best and most effective care to women clients, Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women presents important information about assessment and interfacing with medical professionals. All mental health and helping professionals will find this book invaluable, as will students in clinical/counseling psychology, health psychology, social work, and gender studies. "This book is informative and interesting to read. This is a text that can be read more than once and be that much more helpful in subsequent readings. . . . Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women will certainly have an impact on feminist assessment, theory, and therapy. In a broader context, it provides a foundation to spawn research hypotheses on women′s health and to reconnect the mind and body. Written accessibly even for reader without a background in physiological psychology, it fills a gap in the clinical and counseling literature. This text has far-reaching implications about the origin of psychiatric symptoms and possibly for explaining some differential rates in sex ratios for prevalence of certain psychologically based clinical syndromes. I found the text a humbling reminder of how easy it can be to miss the obvious and how easy it can be to attribute psychological explanations to symptom clusters one doesn′t understand. This book could easily become a ′required′ text for graduate students in mental health professions and mental health professionals. . . . This text will undoubtedly have an impact." --Maria P. P. Root, Ph.D., University of Washington "Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women is very good and will make an important contribution to the field. . . . The book′s message--that it is critical that differential diagnosis include consideration of both psychiatric disorders--is convincing and important to emphasize to students in graduate programs." --Helene Jackson, Ph.D., The Columbia University School of Social Work

Liberal Democracy 3.0 - Stephen P. Turner - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Liberal Democracy 3.0 - Stephen P. Turner - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`This is a very fine text, a powerful piece of work that deserves to be read widely. The analysis is truly panoramic. It ranges across central concerns in the fields of social theory, political theory, and science studies and engages with and/or draws upon the ideas of key classical and contemporary thinkers, including Tocqueville, Weber, Schumpeter, Polyani, Habermas, Foucault, Schmitt and Beck'' - Barry Smart, Professor of Sociology, University of Portsmouth What are the political implications of ''expert'' knowledge and especially scientific knowledge for liberal democracy? If knowledge is not evenly distributed upon what basis can the philosophy of equal rights be sustained? This important book points to the crisis in knowledge in liberal democracies. This crisis, simply put, is that most citizens cannot understand, much less judge, the claims scientists make. One response is the appointment of public commissions to provide conclusions for policy-makers to act upon. There are also `commissions from below'', such as grass roots associations that quiz the limits of expert knowledge and power and make rival knowledge claims. Do these commissions represent a new stage in the development of liberal democracy? Or is it merely a pragmatic device of no political consequence. The central argument of the book is that in a `knowledge society'' in which specialized knowledge is increasingly important to politics, more has to be delegated because democratic discussion can''t handle it. This limitation in the scope of liberal democracy threatens its fundamental character. The book will be required reading in the fields of social theory, political theory and science studies.
