The Power of Pedagogy - Robert E Moon - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

′[This book] is readable, engaging, informative and provoking′ - Tony Rae, ESCalate ′The book is encompassing all my own passions as a holistic practitioner; I feel it is multi-cultural, offering powerfully diverse and inclusive ideas of pedagogy. In particular, the concepts of this book are like a breath of fresh air for the ′disabled′ student, talking about alternative assessment etc.′ - Helene McArthur, ESCalate `Every now and again you come across a really important book that shifts and clarifies your thinking. The Power of Pedagogy is one of those books. Here you′ll find a fascinating analysis of the myriad of issues and ideas surrounding teaching and learning today. Drawing on history, theory and vignettes form today′s classrooms, these two experienced and active thinkers and practitioners have managed to provide new perspectives on the pedagogic mission. A remarkable piece of scholarship, it′s a ′must′ for all those setting out to teach and for those already teaching with the sort of intellectual curiosity that is the hallmark of the outstanding teacher′ - Tim Brighouse, formerly Adviser for London Schools, is Visiting Professor at the Institute of Education ′This important book manages to combine an illuminating breadth of global reference with real insight into the practice of teaching and learning. Its highly readable investigative narrative integrates theory and practice with a quality of analysis that is both rare and entirely convincing′ - Sir David Winkley, former Headteacher Grove School, Handsworth and government education advisor The concept of ′pedagogy′ has become increasingly important as a frame of reference for debate about teaching and learning. In this book the authors analyse and explore contemporary ideas of pedagogy through the work of key figures including Freire, Montessori and Vygotsky, and explain how a new conception of pedagogy could transform educational institutions, particularly schools. In locating pedagogy as central to the process of education the authors: -explore the historical and cultural antecedents of our understanding of pedagogy -analyse the way understanding of the working of the human mind influences teaching and learning -review and critique ideas about learning and the construction of knowledge -examine the way new forms of communication are impacting on the processes and purposes of pedagogic activity. Highly relevant for masters and doctoral students of education, this book will also be of interest to educational practitioners undertaking research on issues related to pedagogy, both in the UK and internationally. Bob Moon and the late Jenny Leach have written extensively on pedagogy, teacher education and international developments in the field, including Learners and Pedagogies (1999). They lead the Research Group on Teacher Education across Societies and Cultures (RITES) at the Open University, UK. Bob Moon is Professor of Education at the Open University and Director of the Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa (TESSA) Programme. Jenny Leach was Professor of Teacher Learning and Development at the Open University.

Glass Half-Empty, Glass Half-Full - Chris Mitchell - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Glass Half-Empty, Glass Half-Full - Chris Mitchell - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`Chris Mitchell was 20 when he was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Both his academic success and the horrendous bullying he suffered highlight the mixed blessings of mainstream education for a child with Asperger syndrome. While his eventual success is heartwarming, from today′s understanding of Asperger, the ignorance and hostility Mitchell faced throughout his early life are shocking′ - TES Extra for Special Needs ′This autobiographical account of a young man′s discovery that Asperger′s syndrome could explain his early problems and provide light at the end of the tunnel, is both insightful and inspiring. Parents of children with Asperger′s syndrome and also older "aspies" will profit from Chris′s hard won experience′ - Dyslexia Contact ′[This] is a straightforward read, full of concrete examples of how Asperger′s syndrome affects the individual but at the same time acknowledging that every individual is different. Having experienced first-hand the vulnerability of the adolescent with Asperger′s syndrome, desperate to make connections with those around him but constantly being knocked back, I was delighted to read about the friendships [Chris Mitchell] eventually establishes when he takes the brave decision to make contacts through the web and sets out on his travels. I would particularly recommend this book to those with little knowledge of Asperger′s syndrome, especially for anyone involved in helping those with a diagnosis of Asperger′s syndrome through further education′ - British Journal of Special Education `This book is a ′must-read′ for any parents of children with Aspergers syndrome and also older aspies themselves. They will be able to relate to the slightly quirky writing style and profit from Chris′s hard won experience. These children are so individualistic and often isolated from like minds, so the book will provide some solace that there are other people like them′ - Judith Stansfield, Chair North Richmondshire Community Partnership SEN ICT Consultant NASEN ICT Group BDACC Reviews and Literature Editor `This book shows how one individual with very severe handicaps due to Asperger′s Syndrome won through in the end and achieved despite such a poor beginning. This is a book which should be read by anyone who has been diagnosed with Asperger′s Syndrome or feels he or she might have this condition′ - Dr L F Lowenstein, National Association Gifted Children Newsletter ′This is an unusual book in that it is written by a man where most autobiographical books about autism are written by women. It is both very readable and well-written, with a detached an honest account of his childhood, family life and life prior to diagnosis. He gets on well with his family, and they are happy that he has written this book, and happy with the book, despite some implied criticism of how they brought him up. Indeed, it comes across as less aggressive than some accounts, so it is particularly insightful for parents and other empathotypicals who might find more black-and-white descriptions of their mistakes hurtful. As with every book written by someone on the spectrum that I have seen, it is a short book, giving a snapshot of his difficulties and joys before and also after his diagnosis, giving highlights of specific problems and pleasures. Overall I think it would be a good book for someone who recognises himself in the author, or as a starting point for deepening your understanding of your brother, son or friend, or, if you are already interested in this condition, to broaden your understanding of the ways that it present itself′ - Asperger United ′[A]n especially uplifting read for a young person or adult newly diagnosed with Asperger′s Syndrom. It also would help those unfamiliar with Asperger′s Syndrome to understand the condition much better′ - REACH This gripping and at times astonishing story will be inspirational to all adults either facing Asperger′s Syndrome personally or interacting with someone who has been diagnosed. In his own imitable style, Chris Mitchell describes his life before and after diagnosis with Asperger′s Syndrome. We follow Chris through primary and secondary school, where his lack of social interaction and anger continually land him in trouble, and where he is bullied for being different. Only his excellent memory and specialist interests enable him to continue, and pass his GCSEs and a GNVQ in Media Studies. At university he is diagnosed with Asperger′s Syndrome. Suddenly his life makes more sense, and his self-awareness means his self-confidence returns, resulting in world travel, a Masters qualification in Information and Library Management and finally, acceptance. Chris Mitchell is a Records Assistant at Durham County Record Office, and also does public speaking on the subject of Asperger′s Syndrome.

Organizational Rhetoric - Mary F. Hoffman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

An unprecedented text explains how to analyze the role of rhetoric in organizations Integrating rhetorical theories and methods with principles of organizational communication, this pioneering text provides students with a step-by-step method for analyzing and critiquing examples of organizational rhetoric. The first half of the book offers an accessible introduction to rhetorical research, theory, and criticism and equips students for analyzing the messages of organizations in a variety of contexts. The second half focuses on needs in real-life organizational situations: to create and maintain identity; to manage messages about issues, risk, and crisis; and to communicate with those "inside" the organization. Contemporary examples and case studies (including a dispute over clean energy in Texas, efforts on the part of restaurant owners in New York to fight food labeling requirements, and a university′s announcement that it is building a "body farm") illustrate the importance of this area of study and provide opportunities for students to apply their emerging analytical and critical thinking skills. Key Features - Grounds the explanation and critique of persuasive organizational messages in traditional and contemporary rhetorical literature - Shows students how to critique the messages organizations use to create and maintain organizational power - Demonstrates the importance of rhetoric to the success of the organization - Uses case studies and accompanying worksheets to help students move through the process of analyzing sample situations and messages - Covers image/impression management, issue management, crisis management, and other key facets of organizational rhetoric - Includes models of the book′s method for analysis at the beginning of each chapter to help students visualize how each step fits into the larger system Intended Audience Organizational Rhetoric: Situations and Strategies is ideal for a wide range of courses at the upper-level undergraduate and master′s level, including Organizational Communication, Organizational Studies, Public Relations, and Rhetorical Studies. This first-of-its-kind textbook is also an essential addition to the libraries of Communication/Rhetoric and Business instructors.
