Impact of Littoral Environmental Variability on Acoustic Predictions and Sonar Performance - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The limiting influence of the environment on sonar has long been recognised as a major challenge to science and technology. As the area of interest shifts towards the lit toral, environmental influences become dominant both in time and space. The manyfold challenges encompass prediction, measurement, assessment and adaptive responses to maximize the effectiveness of systems. Although MCM and ASW activities are dom inated in different ways and scales by the environment, both warfare areas have had to consider the significantly changing requirements posed by operations in the littoraL The fundamental scientific issues involved in developing models relating acoustics to the environment are matched in difficulty by the need for data for their validation and eventual practical use for prediction. In many instances the need is for on-line adaptation of systems to changing circumstances whilst other needs are for the Ionger term planning activities. This book and the attached full-color CD are the proceedings of a conference organ ised by the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, held at Villa Marigola, Lerici, Italy, on 16-20 September 2002. The fundamental problems associated with environmental 1 variability and sonar were explored at a previous SACLANTCEN conference in 1990. These problems have not gone away but, on the one hand are exaggerated by the move to the littoral and on the other hand, are open to treatrnent in new ways that advances in technology and computer power allow.

Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture - B.a. Stout - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture - B.a. Stout - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Adequate food supplies and a reasonable quality of life require energy~both noncommercial and commercial forms. This book is intended to be a reference for individuals who want a comprehensive overview of energy for agriculture, many of whom are located in remote areas with limited library resources. The purpose is to put energy for agriculture in perspective by presenting numerous national and regional examples of energy usage. Since the early 1970s, world petroleum prices have fluctuated from $3/barrel to more than $40/barrel in 1981 and then back to less than a half of the peak price today. Commercial energy is expensive at any price for rural villagers in developing countries, and energy prices in these countries do not necessarily correspond with world prices. For example, diesel fuel prices in some developing countries have increased, while world oil prices have decreased. The rural sector of developing countries depends heavily on noncommercial energy sources. Availability of noncommercial energy is highly site-specific. This book deals extensively with noncommercial energy~its sources, the technologies for converting energy to more useful gaseous and liquid forms, and its ultimate end uses. Chapter I is an introduction and overview. It emphasizes the essential nature of energy to supplement the limited work output of human beings. Chapter II describes energy use in world agriculture with particular emphasis on fertilizer, machinery, and irrigation. It tabulates cereal grain yields as related to commercial energy input for various regions. Chapter III presents numerous national and regional illustrations of energy use.

Principles of Turbomachinery - R. K. Turton - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Principles of Turbomachinery - R. K. Turton - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This text outlines the fluid and thermodynamic principles that apply to all classes of turbomachines, and the material has been presented in a unified way. The approach has been used with successive groups of final year mechanical engineering students, who have helped with the development of the ideas outlined. As with these students, the reader is assumed to have a basic understanding of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. However, the early chapters combine the relevant material with some new concepts, and provide basic reading references. Two related objectives have defined the scope of the treatment. The first is to provide a general treatment of the common forms of turbo machine, covering basic fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of flow through passages and over surfaces, with a brief derivation of the fundamental governing equations. The second objective is to apply this material to the various machines in enough detail to allow the major design and performance factors to be appreciated. Both objectives have been met by grouping the machines by flow path rather than by application, thus allowing an appreciation of points of similarity or difference in approach. No attempt has been made to cover detailed points of design or stressing, though the cited references and the body of information from which they have been taken give this sort of information. The first four chapters introduce the fundamental relations, and the suc ceeding chapters deal with applications to the various flow paths.

Phase diagrams and ceramic processes - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Phase diagrams and ceramic processes - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Ceramic products are fabricated from selected and consolidated raw materials through the application of thermal and mechanical energy. The complex connec tions between thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, fabrication processes, phase development, and ceramic properties define the undergraduate curriculum in Ceramic Science and Ceramic Engineering. Phase diagrams are usually introduced into the engineering curriculum during the study of physical chemistry, prior to specialization into ceramic engineering. This creates an artificial separation between consideration of the equilibrium description of the chemically heterogeneous system and the engineering and physical processes required for phase, microstructure, and property development in ceramic materials. Although convenient for instructional purposes, the separa tion of these topics limits the effective application of phase diagram information by the ceramic engineer in research and manufacturing problem solving. The nature of oxide phases, which define their useful engineering properties, are seldom linked to the stability of those phases which underlies their reliability as engineered products. Similarly, ceramic fabrication processes are seldom dis cussed within the context of the equilibrium or metastable phase diagram. In this text, phase diagrams are presented with a discussion of ceramics'' properties and processing. Particular emphasis is placed on the nature of the oxides themselves-their structural and dielectric properties-which results in unique and stable product performance. Any set of systematic property measurements can be the basis for a phase diagram: every experiment is an experiment in the approach to phase eqUilibrium.

A Handbook for Clinical Teachers - R.a. Cannon - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

A Handbook for Clinical Teachers - R.a. Cannon - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Medical students are to a large extent taught by people who have undertaken little or no formal study in the field of education. Although formal study of any subject is no guarantee of satisfactory on-the-job performance, teaching practice itself without a knowledge of the fundamental princi ples of education is likely to bring distortions into the teaching situation. Our own experience leads us to believe that many teachers are concerned at this lack of expertise. This concern is manifest by their willing participation in activities which provide them with practical assistance in improving their educational skills. Unfortunately, few books have been written to aid the average clinical teacher wishing to gain a perspective on basic educational principles or seeking suggestions on how these might be applied to teaching. A previous publication by the Advisory Centre for University Education (ACUE) at the University of Adelaide, entitled University Teaching, has proved to be very popular, both locally and overseas, and has clearly met the needs of organi zers and participants in teacher training programmes in tertiary institutions. The success of this publication, and our experience with a variety of educational activities organized for staff of medical and dental schools and postgraduate organizations, led us to believe that a pragmatic educational guide for medical teachers would be of value to all such teachers and particularly to those asked to undertake an educational task for the first time.

FANOMICS - Roman Becker - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

FANOMICS - Roman Becker - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Every company wants to turn its customers into true and lifelong fans. In this book, Roman Becker and Gregor Daschmann, the discoverers of the Fan Principle and FANOMICS, demonstrate how this can be actually accomplished. They transfer the mechanisms of fan relationships from sports, music, and art to those between companies and customers. What turns a customer into a “fan” customer? How are these identified? And how can the Fan Rate be managed and even increased? This book provides answers to all these questions. Based on surveys and interviews with more than 100,000 respondents, it becomes clear that fans have the highest customer value and therefore contribute significantly to the economic success of a company. However, in order to win fan customers and increase these numbers, a complete rethinking of customer relationship management and a departure from the customary key performance indicators is necessary. Takingthis path is extremely worthwhile. Fan customers have an emotional connection to their provider and form a new, reliable “currency” - both as direct buyers and as active ambassadors. This a must-read for all business decision-makers who want to improve the quality of their customer relationships, while saving money and achieving more than just short-term success. From the contents:- Definition of fan customers and what “emotional customer loyalty” means- Distinct value of the fan customer as a value-added partner and ambassador- FANOMICS as a management program in customer relationship management- Concrete suggestions for implementing FANOMICS - Best practices and illustrative examples of tops and flops from the business world

SPSS for Starters, Part 2 - Ton J. Cleophas - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

SPSS for Starters, Part 2 - Ton J. Cleophas - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The first part of this title contained all statistical tests that are relevant for starters on SPSS, and included standard parametric and non-parametric tests for continuous and binary variables, regression methods, trend tests, and reliability and validity assessments of diagnostic tests. The current part 2 of this title reviews multistep methods, multivariate models, assessments of missing data, performance of diagnostic tests, meta-regression, Poisson regression, confounding and interaction, and survival analyses using log tests and segmented time-dependent Cox regression. Methods for assessing non linear models, data seasonality, distribution free methods, including Monte Carlo methods and artificial intelligence, and robust tests are also covered. Each method of testing is explained using a data example from clinical practice, including every step in SPSS, and a text with interpretations of the results and hints convenient for data reporting. In order to facilitate the use of this cookbook the data files of the examples is made available by the editor through extras.springer.com. Both part 1 and 2 of this title contain a minima amount of text and maximal technical details, but we believe that this property will not refrain students from mastering the SPSS software systematics, and that, instead, it will be a help to that aim. Yet, we recommend that it will used together with the textbook "Statistics Applied to Clinical Trials" (5th edition, Springer, Dordrecht 2012) and the e-books "Statistics on a Pocket Calculator Part 1 and 2 (Springer, Dordrecht, 2011 and 2012) from the same authors.

Heteroglossia as Practice and Pedagogy - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Heteroglossia as Practice and Pedagogy - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This volume presents evidence about how we understand communication in changing times, and proposes that such understandings may contribute to the development of pedagogy for teaching and learning. It expands current debates on multilingualism, asking which signs are in use and in action, and what are their social, political, and historical implications. The volume’s starting-point is Bakhtin’s ‘heteroglossia’, a key concept in understanding the tensions, conflicts, and multiple voices within, among, and between those signs. The chapters provide illuminating accounts of language practices as they bring into play, both in practice and in pedagogy, voices which index students’ localities, social histories, circumstances, and identities. The book documents the performance of linguistic repertoires in an era of profound social change caused by the shifting nature of nation-states, increased movement of people across territories, and growing digital communication. “Our thinking on language and multilingualism is expanding rapidly. Up until recently we have tended to regard languages as bounded entities, and multilingualism has been understood as knowing more than one language. Working with the concept of heteroglossia, researchers are developing alternative perspectives that treat languages as sets of resources for expressing meaning that can be drawn on by speakers in communicatively productive ways in different contexts. These perspectives raise fundamental questions about the myriad of ways of knowing and using language(s). This collection brings together the contributions of many of the key researchers in the field. It will provide an authoritative reference point for contemporary interpretations of ‘heteroglossia’ and valuable accounts of how ‘translanguaging’ can be explored and exploited in the fields of education and cultural studies.” Professor Constant Leung, King’s College London, UK. "From rap and hip hop to taxicabs, and from classrooms to interactive online learning environments, each of the chapters in this volume written by well-known and up-and-coming scholars provide fascinating accounts drawing on a wide diversity of rich descriptive data collected in heteroglossic contexts around the globe. Creese and Blackledge have brought together a compelling collection that builds upon and expands Bakhtin’s construct of heteroglossia. These scholars help to move the field away from the view of languages as separate bounded system by providing detailed examples and expert analyses of the ways bilinguals and multilinguals draw upon their linguistic repertoires for effective and meaningful communication." Wayne E. Wright, University of Texas at San Antonio, USA.
