Since the 1960s, there have been two schools of thought on the origins and nature of black consciousness: the adaptive-vitality school and the pathological-pathogenic school. The latter argues that in its divergences from white American norms and values, black American consciousness is nothing more than a pathological form of and reaction to American consciousness, rather than a dual (both African and American) counter hegemonic opposing "identity-in-differential" (the term is Gayatri Spivak''s) to the American one. Proponents of the adaptive-vitality school argue that the divergences are not pathologies but African "institutional transformations" preserved on the American landscape. The purpose of this work is to understand black consciousness by working out the theoretical and methodological problems from which these two divergent schools are constructed, in order to arrive at a more sociohistorical, rather than racial, understanding of black consciousness. Using a variant of structuration theory to account for the sociohistorical development of black consciousness formation within the American social structure, author Paul Mocombe concludes that black American life is dual and pathological only in relation to a particular interpretive community, the black bourgeoisie or liberal middle class.

Using a variant of structuration theory, what Paul C. Mocombe calls phenomenological structuralism, this work explores and highlights how the African religion of Vodou and its ethic, i.e., syncretism, materialism, communal living or social collectivism, democracy, individuality, cosmopolitanism, spirit of social justice, xenophilia, balance, harmony, and gentleness, gave rise, under the leadership of oungan yo, manbo yo, gangan yo, and granmoun yo, to the Haitian spirit of communism and the “counter-plantation system” (Jean Casimir’s term) in the provinces and mountains of Haiti. What Mocombe calls the Vodou Ethic and the spirit of communism of the African people of Haiti would be juxtaposed against the Catholic/Protestant Ethic and the spirit of capitalism of the white, mulatto, gens de couleur, and petit-bourgeois free black classes of the island. This latter worldview, the Catholic/Protestant Ethic and the spirit of capitalism, Mocombe goes on to argue, exercised by the free bourgeois blacks and mulatto elites, Affranchis, on the island undermined the revolutionary and independence movement of Haiti commenced by subjects/agents, oungan yo, manbo yo, gangan yo/dokté fey, and granmoun yo, of the Vodou ethic and the spirit of communism, and made it the poorest, most racist, and tyrannical country in the Western Hemisphere.

Using 2 Corinthians 11:16-12:13, Romans 8:9-39, and Philippians 3:2-4:13, the author uncovers the performance of ten stylistic operations: sentence changes, complexity of the writing, adverbs and adverbial clauses, propositional reduction; logical diagrams, abstract versus concrete nouns, imagery, Leo Spitzer''s philological circle, verb density, and variety of sentence length. In this study, stylistics denotes the use of linguistics as a tool of literary criticism by which to investigate the aesthetic effects of language. This methodology produces an investigation to compare Paul''s style of communication to three different communities and discover his adaptations to different audiences.

In this book, both Tillich''s nothingness and that of Barth are investigated, especially in their doctrines of God, Christologies, anthropologies, and understandings of the problem of evil, which will lead to a better understanding of their existential analyses of being and non-being and their implications with their Trinitarian God. To accomplish this task, a comparative study is engaged by examining the understanding of nothingness of theologians Paul Tillich and Karl Barth. The differences and similarities in their understanding of nothingness will be examined. This study is formulated to show how Tillich''s nothingness is different from that of Barth. Tillich''s understanding is philosophical-theological and it goes beyond that of traditional metaphysics. That is, Tillich''s theology differs from the metaphysics of Hegel and Schelling that are ideal and abstract. In this sense, the objective of this study is to demonstrate that Tillich''s philosophical theology can serve as a source of mediation between philosophy and theology. At the same time, this study will show that Barth''s nothingness, as an evangelical-biblical understanding, is very significant in defending Christian faith. That is, this study will lead us to know that Barth''s theology of nothingness safeguards Christian faith from being trivialized and marginalized by liberal theology.

This book uses rhetorical analysis to illuminate one of the most fascinating and complicated speeches by Saint Paul: 2 Cor 10–13. The main problem of the speech regards Paul’s claim to be a true servant of Christ and to have the right to boast about it. Paul proves he is strong enough to be the leader of Corinth and paradoxically demonstrates that weakness should belong to the identity of an apostle. Another issue regards the legitimacy of his boasting. The egocentric boast based on the comparison with his opponents is the one that Paul calls foolish, but he is forced, nevertheless, to undertake it. The tool that ultimately enables him to transform self-aggrandizing speech into speech that is focused on Christ is his paradoxical boasting of weakness. The careful crafting of his discourse based on Christological principles ultimately speaks for qualifying it as a self-praise speech (periautologia) with a pedagogical, not defensive, purpose.

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are in constant misdirected motion, unable to concentrate and complete assigned tasks, and behave impulsively. Their poor-self control frequently interferes with classroom learning and hinders their ability to relate to parents, teachers, and peers. Continued failure and criticism from those around them often has a profoundly negative impact on the ADHD child''s self-concept. As a result, the child''s internal disposition becomes one of hopelessness. Rather than anticipating and planning for success, ADHD children anticipate failure, believing there is little they can do to control their destiny. Many ADHD children become markedly despondent as they move from one developmental stage to the next. They engage in various forms of oppositional behavior believing they simply can not succeed. In short, they have given up. In order to alter this course, ADHD children must learn to replace hopelessness with hopefulness. The insidious and often unrecognized depression blocking this transition must be addressed. The purpose of this book is to provide parents, educators, and mental health professionals with a conceptual and practical framework for identifying and correcting this emotional virus, which can undermine even the most well-designed and implemented therapeutic and educational program.
