In this edition of The Making of an African King: Patrilineal and Matrilineal Struggle Among the Ᾱwutu (Effutu) of Ghana, Revised & Updated, every chapter is updated, taking into account the 2015 Ghana Supreme Court ruling on the internecine kingship struggle among the Ᾱwutu (Effutu) of Simpa (Winneba). The patrilineal Otuano Royal Family sued the Acquah faction and proponents of matrilineal succession in 1976, seeking confirmation of their inalienable right as the sole kingmakers of Simpa, and also for the court to place perpetual injunction on the Acquahs never to interfere in the royal affairs of Simpa. During the intervening decades from 1976-2015, Simpa witnessed a spate of intermittent political violence, especially the months leading to their annual Nyantɔr (aboakyir) Festival, all aimed at preventing the king from propitiating the ancestors and deities of Simpa led by Pɛnkyae Otu. With the Supreme Court ruling, people now have the opportunity to read the judgment in its entirety and make up their own minds. What is actually fascinating about the whole internecine royal struggle is, that we have a situation whereby a matrilineal political system practiced by the Akan is displacing a long-established patrilineal system of descent traditionally practiced by the Guan speaking people of Simpa. Such an idea would be unheard of in the West, but this is what is happening among the Ᾱwutu (Effutu) of Simpa (Winneba) socio-culturally and politically. Indeed, it shows how unique and transformative the Akan ābusua (a mother and her children) system is all about.

The Deadly Embrace - Ilana Kass - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The purpose of this book is three-fold: First, drawing on a wide array of primary and secondary sources, it aims to compare and contrast the historical roots, goals, strategies, organizational structures, and current activities of Palestinian and Israeli opponents of any mutual compromise. Second, the book assesses the dynamic interaction of two rejectionist movements, espousing mutually exclusive political agendas and demonstrates how they feed off and reinforce each others enmities. Third, the book seeks to expose to public scrutiny a deeply-entrenched phenomenon that has continued to lurk in the shadows, while enjoying both tacit and direct support from segments within the American Arab and Jewish communities. Although such recent outrages as the Hebron massacre, the Rabin assassination and the spate of suicide bombings in Israel''s cities have re-centered attention on Middle Eastern terrorism, the primary focus has been on lone actions of deranged individuals. In contrast, the authors contend that what we have witnessed thus far is merely the tip of the iceberg—overt manifestations of a deep-seated, festering problem, namely: increasingly militant insurgent movements, united in their near-term aim of destroying the peace process, but ultimately sworn to destroy each other. The book concludes with a set of policy choices and recommendations which the U.S., Israel and the Palestinian National Authority should pursue in tandem to marginalize the rejectionist threat, before it escalates to hitherto unimaginable levels of violence. Co-published with the National Institute of Public Policy.

The Phenomenon of Religion - Manfred H. Vogel - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Phenomenon of Religion - Manfred H. Vogel - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Phenomenon of Religion proposes a new way of seeing the bifurcation (a division into two parts or branches) within the religious phenomenon of pagan and biblical religions. In contrast to seeing the bifurcation as monotheism and polytheism, Dr. Manfred Vogel argues for viewing the separation in terms of the "Buberian bifurcation" that divides the It-dimension and the Thou-dimension. The "It-dimension meaning: entities constituting themselves in terms of physical nature, i.e. entities that ultimately ground themselves in a dimension-of-power exemplified by many of their characterizations. The "Thou-dimension" meaning: entities constituting themselves in terms of personhood, i.e. to entities that ultimately ground themselves in the dimension of consciousness. On the basis of a fundamental division in religions, this work presents the case that in contrast to pagan religion, which grounds itself exclusively within the dimension of power, biblical religion grounds itself within the dimension of consciousness-instead of having a God as a power, it gives us God as a person. This revolutionary innovation raises some serious difficulties by biblical religion retaining its hold within the dimension of power. The book proceeds to analyze in detail this problematic innovation and indeed to show that the various expressions constituting biblical religion-Halachic Judaism, Christianity, and Islam-distinguish themselves from each other by varying degrees by which they divide their grounding between power and consciousness. Dr. Vogel''s conclusion on the phenomenon of religion concerns secular modernity and its influence over the history and future of religion, particularly Halachic Judaism''s emancipation under the "enlightenment" of modernity.
