Bottled Poetry - James T. Lapsley - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Bottled Poetry - James T. Lapsley - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

California's Napa Valley is one of the world's premier wine regions today, but this has not always been true. James T. Lapsley's entertaining history explains how a collective vision of excellence among winemakers and a keen sense of promotion transformed the region and its wines following the repeal of Prohibition. Focusing on the formative years of Napa's fine winemaking, 1934 to 1967, Lapsley concludes with a chapter on the wine boom of the 1970s, placing it in a social context and explaining the role of Napa vineyards in the beverage's growing popularity. Names familiar to wine drinkers appear throughout these pages—Beaulieu, Beringer, Charles Krug, Christian Brothers, Inglenook, Louis Martini—and the colorful stories behind the names give this book a personal dimension. As strong-willed, competitive winemakers found ways to work cooperatively, both in sharing knowledge and technology and in promoting their region, the result was an unprecedented improvement in wine quality that brought with it a new reputation for the Napa Valley. In The Silverado Squatters, Robert Louis Stevenson refers to wine as "bottled poetry," and although Stevenson's reference was to the elite vineyards of France, his words are appropriate for Napa wines today. Their success, as Lapsley makes clear, is due to much more than the beneficence of sun and soil. Craft, vision, and determination have played a part too, and for that, wine drinkers the world over are grateful. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Elders, Shades, and Women - Richard T. Curley - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Elders, Shades, and Women - Richard T. Curley - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

In Elders, Shades, and Women, Richard T. Curley describes the ceremonial life of a Nilotic community in northern Uganda and traces the alterations in its ceremonial activities from the turn of the twentieth century to the beginning of extensive contact between the Langi and Europeans in the 1960s. Setting his analysis within the broad context of Lango social organization, Curley discusses the makeup of the community and shows how the innovations of the colonial period led to changes in kinship relations and residential patterns. He is particularly attentive to the husband-wife relationship and to the changing status of women within a patrilineal system. After describing Lango social organization and the changes that it has undergone, Curley turns to the three complexes of Lango ceremonial activity. One of these, traditionally performed by older men, has virtually disappeared, a victim of altered political relationships. The second set, comprising eight separate ceremonies performed for married women, concerns the problem of incorporating a women into her husband's lineage while recognizing that she was born in her father's. The third complex, centering on spirit possession, has become increasingly popular, and women participate to a much greater extent than men. The author treats his religious material within the framework of structural-functionalism by concentrating on ceremonial activities rather than on belief and by relating the ceremonies to social processes. He departs from structural-functionalism, however, in borrowing heavily from work on the analysis of symbols, and he attempts to describe change rather than analyzing Lango religious activity at a single point in time. The Foreign Trade of China - Gene T. Hsiao - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

The Foreign Trade of China - Gene T. Hsiao - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

The Foreign Trade of China: Policy, Law, and Practice is a comprehensive study that delves into the complexities of China's foreign trade since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The book explores the institutional frameworks, laws, trade policies, and practices that have shaped China’s trade relations, particularly with the United States. The study is especially relevant in the context of the normalization of Sino-American relations in the 1970s, a period when trade became a central avenue of communication between the two nations despite political tensions. Gene T. Hsiao examines China's foreign trade objectives in relation to broader policy goals, offering insights into the various state trading corporations, legal contracts, and dispute resolution mechanisms that govern trade in China. Hsiao provides a detailed account of China’s economic exchanges, using a wide range of sources, including government documents, trade agreements, and interviews with officials and business executives. He also discusses the challenges faced by American businesses attempting to engage with China, particularly the unique negotiating style and the Chinese reluctance to adapt to capitalist marketing techniques. Despite these challenges, Hsiao highlights the satisfaction many American traders have experienced in their dealings with China, emphasizing the growing importance of trade as a means of fostering Sino-American relations. The book offers both an academic and practical guide for understanding the intricacies of China's foreign trade and provides crucial context for those looking to navigate the complexities of trade with one of the world's most influential economies.
