Alnus Incana, also known as Grey Alder Tree, is an exceptionally hardy variety, noted for its attractive foliage. This small to mid-sized, deciduous tree and these specimens are mature trees which can be used for specimen planting.Sharing all the noteworthy qualities with the Common Alder Alnus Glutinosa, Alnus Incana gets its common name from the grey felted underside of its foliage. The leaves are typical for the species, dark green and leathery with doubly serrated edges. Not unlike its close relatives, this tree produces sticky young growth and a profusion of yellow catkins during March. The male catkins drop as the flowering season ends, while the female catkins harden into wood-like cones with winged seeds. The highly-decorative cones remain on the three as the seasons pass, offering particular interest throughout the following winter.Same as it is the case with the Common Alder, the Grey Alder Tree is a reliable performer in poor conditions. Not only does Alnus Incana tolerate poor soils, it will fix nitrogen from the air, resulting in the improvement of the soil it is planted in. Alnus Incana tolerates any type of soil, regardless of its fertility and drainage. Grey Alder is not bothered by overly wet soils nor drought, and it will not mind urban pollution. For best results, however, plant this cultivar in moist, but well-drained soil, in full sun to dappled shade. Introduced to the United Kingdom as far back as the 18th century, Grey Alder Tree is fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. Liquidambar Styraciflua Palo Alto has particularly striking orange-red autumn colour, similar in appearance to that of some Japanese Maples, turning a darker red before falling. It is a popular landscape tree which is exceptionally hardy and boasts resistance to oak root fungus. Sweet Gum Palo Alto features maple-like leaves which turn a bright orange-red hue in the autumn. Right before the leaves are shed they turn a rich burgundy colour, putting on a brilliant and long-lasting autumn show. In the spring, the Sweet Gum Palo Alto produces inconspicuous yellow flowers followed by round, thorny seed pods that measure about 2.5 centimeters in diameter. The bark is very distinctive in appearance with deep furrows but as the tree matures it also takes on a light grey hue. This Sweet Gum variety grows to a height and spread of 15 metres by 12 metres. Palo Alto naturally has an attractive pyramid growth habit. Sweet Gum Palo Alto is hardy throughout the UK to hardiness zone 6. It can withstand temperatures down to -15 Celsius. Sweet Gum Palo Alto makes an ideal street tree or landscape shade tree. Be sure to plant it in a location where you can enjoy its eye-catching foliage colour. It grows best when planted in full sun but the tree will tolerate partial shade. Choose a planting location that is well-draining. It can tolerate soil that is highly acidic to moderately alkaline. When first planted, keep the soil evenly moist to encourage root growth. Once established it is moderately drought tolerant and relatively care free. It does not require pruning but will withstand trimming to maintain its standard size and shape if desired.

Musa Basjoo or Banana TreeMusa Basjoo is a hardy Japanese banana plant. It lends an exotic air of the tropics to UK gardens, but this herbaceous perennial has a degree of hardiness that makes it possible to survive the winter in milder parts of the UK. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Originally growing in Sichuan province of China before being introduced to the Ryukyu Islands south of Japan, Musa basjoo is noted for its rapid growth and large, spectacular leaves and unusual flowers. Its thick, paddle-shaped leaves, up to 60 cm across and more than 2 metres long, fan out from the stem in a fountain shape.  In summer it produces spikes of cream-coloured flowers, which hang downwards.  Throughout the summer it will grow in height, with new leaves unfurling almost every week. Given the right conditions and protection, the hardy Japanese banana plant can grow to 4 metres in height with a spread of 2.5 metres in 5 to 10 years. A container-grown Musa basjoo will be somewhat smaller because of the restrictions on the root system.Musa basjoo will survive outside in very mild parts of the UK without winter cover, but wherever there are freezing temperatures, it needs protection after the first autumn frost.  Build a cage out of chicken wire, or make a tube out of horticultural fleece, and stuff it with straw or leaves to insulate the plant from freezing temperatures. Mulch the ground heavily to protect the roots. Musa basjoo will grow back from the roots even if the stem is killed off in the winter, as it is root-hardy to -15C. Growing from the roots, the hardy Japanese banana plant can reach a height of 2 metres in one summer Musa basjoo needs to be carefully sited in your garden. Find a sheltered spot with a south-facing aspect, in full sun or dappled shade.  Plant in well-drained but moist sand, chalk or loam soil with a nitrogen-rich fertilize and plenty of humus. It prefers a slightly acidic ph. If it settles in happily, you will be able to remove suckers to plant elsewhere in the spring, or divide the clumps every five years. Cut the flowering spikes off after they finish blooming, as the Musa basjoo will die after setting fruit, and you will want to keep it as an ornamental plant for many years!Plant your hardy Japanese banana plant as a specimen plant in the middle of a lawn, where its dramatic, exotic appearance will create a stunning focal point. It is also an excellent candidate for container growing on a patio or in a courtyard, and can then be easily brought in to a greenhouse or conservatory for overwintering.  Musa basjoo will bring the jungle to your garden with its dramatic leaves, and is well worth the trouble that it will take to protect through a UK winter.
