Betterbuxus Renaissance, Blight Resistant Box Renaissance

Betterbuxus Renaissance, Blight Resistant Box Renaissance

Betterbuxus Renaissance is a new blight-resistant evergreen box hybrid with compact branches and small glossy leaves.A decade of research from Belgian breeder Herplant has led to the development of four new blight-resistant box hybrids. The hybrids are named Betterbuxus with individual varieties Renaissance, Babylon Beauty, Heritage, and Skylight.Betterbuxus Renaissance is much like the traditional box we all know but is more compact. It has tiny year-round dark green leaves and needs very little pruning due to its slow growth habit. New spring growth is paler but slowly matures to a darker green and is sometimes followed by small cream flowers. This new variety of blight-resistant box is a great choice for topiary, low growing hedges, dividing parterres, and patio containers in blight-hit areas.Height and Spread of Betterbuxus RenaissanceBlight Resistant Box Renaissance is slow-growing and can be kept at whatever height and spread you choose with a yearly prune. How Hardy Is Betterbuxus RenaissanceBuxus can withstand UK winters and sub-zero temperatures if the roots are well-drained. Blight resistant box Renaissance also withstands some box tree caterpillar attack, growing back fresh green growth after an infestation has been dealt with. How To Use Betterbuxus RenaissanceThese plants thrive as border and container plants. Because blight resistant box Renaissance is slow-growing and especially compact it suits low-growing hedging, low maintenance gardens, and well-watered containers of topiary. How To Care For Betterbuxus RenaissanceRenaissance will grow in all types of soil, including sandy soils, and will tolerate partial shade. It’s slow-growing nature means a once yearly trim is enough to keep it in shape.Natural blight resistance means fungal treatments are not required, but you should water during dry spells, feed each year with a specialist box feed, and mulch the roots in spring to encourage healthy growth.

Boxwood Topiary Spiral Buxus Spiral Box Spiral Topiary

Boxwood Topiary Spiral Buxus Spiral Box Spiral Topiary

Boxwood Topiary Spiral is a small-leaved slow-growing evergreen shrub clipped into spiral form using topiary techniques. It’s an excellent way to bring shape and formality to your garden. It suits patios and balconies and creates ornamental living sculpture on either side of a door or pathway.Buxus, better known as box or boxwood, is a widespread evergreen native to Europe, northwest Africa, southwest Asia and across to Turkey. It’s been grown in UK gardens for centuries as topiary and low evergreen hedges or parterres for herb or medicinal gardens.Buxus spirals are closely clipped box plants. They have many tiny dark-green glossy leaves throughout the year and tiny white flowers in spring that are adored by pollinators. Box holds the RHS plants for pollinators badge for its bee-attracting properties.Box takes very well to topiary. It’s forgiving and can be trained into globes, cones, pyramids and the spirals that we offer here. It’s hard to beat formally clipped box, and in spiral form it’s a talking point with instant impact.Height And Spread of Boxwood Topiary SpiralBox will grow to several metres in height and spread, but buxus spirals can be kept short and neat with a yearly trim. How Hardy Is Boxwood Topiary SpiralThis is a hardy evergreen shrub that withstands freezing temperatures if it has well-drained roots. How To Use Boxwood Topiary SpiralNothing brings more formality than clipped box topiary.Use buxus spirals on either side of your front door, mark out the start or end of a pathway, or line a front garden with smart green sculpture. A row of spirals creates an unusual low hedge to partition garden spaces, and they will attract pollinators if the flowers are left to bloom before a trim.Box spirals grow well in containers, but will require regular water and box-specific fertiliser to flourish. How To Care For Boxwood Topiary SpiralBox spirals prefer partial shade and will grow in the majority of well-drained soils including chalk and sand if regularly watered. Box doesn’t like drying out and hot direct sun can scorch its foliage.Because they are slow growing, buxus spirals only require one clip a year (maximum two) to keep in shape.  Water them well until established and during hot spells. Use regular good quality buxus feed and apply a thick layer of mulch to the roots in spring to trap moisture and provide nutrients for the growing year.

Acer Negundo Aureomarginatum Box Elder Aureomarginatum

Acer Negundo Aureomarginatum Box Elder Aureomarginatum

Acer Negundo Aureomarginatum or Box Elder AureomarginataThe Acer Negundo aureomarginatum is a variegated form of a Box Elder tree. It only reaches 7 meters in height when fully grown and its diminutive sizes makes it an ideal tree for small gardens. It can be grown either as a single stem or multi-stem tree. Box Elder Aureomarginata grows at a rapid rate. It is a long-living deciduous tree and should flourish in the garden for at least fifty or more years.Variegated leaves are the true focal point of the small tree. The pinnate leaves have a yellowish-white coloured margin and the interior is a bright green. Plant this tree beside evergreens or other darker plants to create visual contrast in the garden and to truly appreciate its lovely variegated foliage. During the autumn, the foliage typically turns yellow before falling from the tree to reveal interesting pale grey branches. During the spring and early summer, the tree does flower and bear tiny fruit but they offer no ornamental significance and are often completely overlooked. The small Box Elder grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade. It is a hardy little tree and will tolerate a wide array of soil types and pH levels. However, it does not like overly wet feet, so you should pick a well-draining planting site. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and often thrives where more delicate trees perish. After planting the tree, keep the root system moist but not overly wet for the first year to encourage strong root growth. Once the tree has established itself, it will readily tolerate periods of brief drought.Typically, the Acer negundo Aureomarginatum does not require extensive pruning, but if you wish to trim the tree to maintain its size then the pruning should be done in the summer after the leaves have fully matured. The tree should not be pruned in the winter or spring because it is prone to bleeding sap. Most variegated trees are prone to reversion which means that the tree’s dominant characteristic of growing solid green leaves can take over. If the tree grows a branch that only has solid green foliage and the leaves boast no variegation than the limb should be pruned to maintain the tree’s variegated characteristics. The tree often sprouts at the base so it can be grown as a large oval-shaped shrub. If you wish the Box Elder to remain a single stem specimen then promptly remove any shoots from the base of the tree as they appear. The Box Elder Aureomarginata is a German cultivar. Its history can be traced back to 1883. The small tree has stood the test of time and still remains a garden favourite. It is a wonderful choice for an accent tree, focal specimen, or to provide modest shade. We also sell the Acer Negundo Flamingo which is also a variety of variegated box elder.

Ilex crenata Blondie Japanese Holly Globes. Box Alternative

Ilex crenata Blondie Japanese Holly Globes. Box Alternative

Ilex Crenata BlondieA versatile landscaping plant, Japanese Holly Blondie is the perfect topiary or hedging shrub. These Ilex Crenata Globes are a great choice for topiary. It makes an excellent alternative to box. Ilex crenata Blondie gets its name because of the light green new growth each spring, which darkens to a glossy dark green as it matures. The leaves are oval and slightly pointed. Small white flowers appear in the spring and summer, followed in the autumn by glossy black berries much loved by birds. This evergreen shrub will stay green throughout the winter, providing a dependable backdrop in all seasons. Reliably winter hardy throughout most of the UK, Japanese Holly Blondie will slowly grow to a height and spread of 3.5 metres over a period of 20 to 50 years. It responds excellently to pruning, even on old wood. Two prunings a year, in early summer and then again in September or October, will be enough to maintain the desired shape of this shrub. Plant your Ilex crenata Blondie in late winter or early spring. These tough plants will tolerate any soil type, as long as it is nutrient-rich and well-drained. It will do best in a neutral to acid ph soil. If you are planting in clay soil, make sure to add plenty of humus to lighten it.  As long as it is planted in the full sun, Japanese Holly Blondie will thrive in a sheltered or exposed location. It is not susceptible to pollution and so is an excellent choice in an urban garden. With the decline of box as a hedging shrub due to blight, Ilex crenata Blondie has become a highly desirable replacement. It has many excellent qualities to recommend it for hedges and for all types of topiary including topiary globes. Its leaves are very similar to box, and it maintains a dense bushiness even after pruning. Japanese Holly Blondie can be pruned to maintain a very formal, geometric shape with perfectly straight lines, or left to take a more natural form. Ilex crenata Blondie is an excellent topiary plant. It can be clipped into forms as simple as a potted topiary ball or a tall column by a doorway, or as complex as a green, living sculpture. Because they do well as potted plants, the topiaries are very decorative year-round on patios, balconies, or roof terraces. Since its development in the 1990’s in Belgium, Ilex crenata Blondie has become a stand-out hedging and topiary shrub in UK gardens. It is dependable, disease-resistant, and beautiful in a variety of landscape applications.

Deciduous Weigela le Printemps is a beautiful pale pink flowering weigela with highly decorative foliage. It’s a good choice for compact gardens and a terrific bee magnet. Weigela are some of the most popular UK garden shrubs and la Printemps is a firm favourite here.Scottish plant hunter Robert Fortune found weigela in Asia and introduced them to the UK in the mid-1800s where they were instantly popular for their pretty blooms and ability to withstand the UK climate. Weigela is a member of the honeysuckle family, but it forms a genus of hardy flowering shrubs. The cultivar Weigela le Printemps was developed by Lemoine in 1901. They often also feature a light white, purple, or pink coating when young. In the early spring, nondescript flowers appear that droop in racemes that measure up to 20 centimeters in length. Following flowering, seeds develop. The seeds are slender samaras that measure about 2 centimeters in length and grow in clusters. Many people think that the clusters of seeds resemble a bunch of keys hanging on a key ring. Only female trees produce the seed clusters. During the autumn months, the seeds provide visual interest until they drop from the tree. The tree's autumn colours are either bright yellow in areas with cold winters or a more bronze-orange in regions with mild winters. The Box Elder tree grows rapidly to a height of almost 25 metres with a canopy width of equal proportion which makes it an ideal shade choice. It is also commonly used in shelterbelts or to stabilize flood-prone areas such as along rivers. The diameter of the Acer Negundo’s trunk is relatively slender and rarely exceeds 50 centimeters in diameter. These trees are sold root-balled with a multi-stem shape or form. The several trunks can form a virtually impenetrable barrier when fully grown.Plant the Box Elder in full sun for best growth. Ideally, it should receive at least six hours of sun or more per day. Although this tree is stalwart and succeeds where very few other trees will survive, it still requires good care to establish a strong root system. It should be planted in an area that provides it with plenty of room to grow to its full potential. If you are seeking a tenacious tree that adapts to a variety of situations, then look no further than the Acer Negundo. Its rapid growth and ability to tolerate adverse conditions makes it a perfect low maintenance shade tree choice. See also Acer Negundo Kelly's Gold and Acer Negundo Flamingo.

Ruscus Aculeatus Butcher's Broom for Sale Box Holly

Ruscus Aculeatus Butcher's Broom for Sale Box Holly

The Ruscus Aculeatus is referred to by a variety of names such as Butcher’s Broom and Box Holly. A small, evergreen shrub it rarely exceeds one meter in height. It spreads outward approximately one metre. A slower grower, the Ruscus aculeatus does not reach full maturity until it is ten to twenty years old. The evergreen leaves of the Ruscus aculeatus are erect and tough. They features striated stems that are an eye-catching glossy green. The leaves look thorny but the thorns are only false. Interestingly, the shrub is commonly called a Butcher’s Broom because historically butchers favoured making brooms out of the tree’s tough foliage. They used the small hand brooms to clean their butcher blocks and cutting boards. Historically, the compounds in Butcher’s Broom have been used in a variety of medications. Studies indicate that the plant’s compounds contain strong anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and laxative properties. Today the plant’s components are still under investigation by medical researchers for their possible medicinal uses. During the early spring months, the Butcher’s Broom produces small, light green flowers that stand out in stark contrast against the shrub’s dark green foliage. The flowers quickly give way to brilliant, glossy, red berries. The berries only develop on the female plants and persist throughout the summer months and into the winter. The dried stems of the Butcher’s Broom are a favourite addition to flower arrangements and widely utilized by florists, especially during the holidays when the plant’s shoots are used to create wreaths and other festive decorations. To encourage ample fruit production, it is strongly suggested that you plant both male and female plants close to each other. The Butcher’s Broom or Box Holly shrub is exceptionally hardy and requires virtually no care once established. It grows well in a wide array of soil conditions, however it does not tolerate flooded areas where it will be exposed to constantly wet roots. Once established, it can withstand periods of long drought.  The small, hardy shrub is virtually pest and disease free.Box Holly requires no pruning to maintain its size and shape. However, in the spring months, if a dead shoot should develop, it can be easily clipped away and discarded. Cut the shoot as close to the base of the plant as possible.Plant the Butcher’s Broom in sunlight or shade. It is an ideal shrub to plant beneath large trees where it will receive dappled sunlight.
