Structure Formation in the Universe - T. Padmanabhan - Bog - Cambridge University Press - Plusbog.dk

Structure Formation in the Universe - T. Padmanabhan - Bog - Cambridge University Press - Plusbog.dk

Understanding the way in which large-scale structures like galaxies form remains the most challenging problem in cosmology today. This text provides an up-to-date and pedagogical introduction to this exciting area of research. Part 1 deals with the Friedmann model, the thermal history of the universe, and includes a description of observed structures in the universe. Part 2 describes the theory of gravitational instability in the linear regime, and the statistics of density fields. This part also includes chapters on the microwave background radiation and large scale velocity fields. Part 3 of the book covers nonlinear instability, high redshift objects, inflation, cosmic strings and dark matter. Each chapter is accompanied by a comprehensive set of exercises to help the reader in self-study. The book will be of interest to research and graduate students in cosmology, relativity, theoretical physics, astrophysics and astronomy. It is also suitable for use as a graduate textbook for introductory graduate level courses. The diagram on the cover shows the distribution of galaxies in the universe around us. It is derived from a density plot out to 325 million light years using the QDOT (QMW -- Durham -- Oxford -- Toronto) all-sky redshift survey of galaxies detected by the IRAS satellite. The Local Supercluster (including our own Milky Way) lies near the centre of the plot with A1367, Coma, A2197/2199 and Hercules joining together to form part of the Great Wall in the Northern Hemisphere, with Hercules along the top right limb. Joined to this huge structure with a bridge of galaxies passing through the galactic plane are Perseus -- Pisces and N1600. Other newly detected superclusters(S3, S6) are shown at the foot of the diagram, below the Perseus -- Pisces trunk. The Pavo -- Indus structure seems to be floating to the immediate right of the lower trunk. Shapley''s supercluster is floating immediately above it with the Hydra -- Centaurus cluster extending from the mai

Classical Antiquity and Medieval Ireland - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Through an extensive series of extracts and accompanying interpretative and contextual essays, this open access volume showcases the expertise in classical learning that flourished in medieval Gaelic Ireland. Providing translations of all excerpts, it situates better known ‘antiquity sagas’ in the Middle Irish language, such as Togail Troí ( The Siege of Troy , based on Dares Phrygius), Imtheachta Aeniasa ( The Wanderings of Aeneas , based on Virgil’s Aeneid ), In Cath Catharda ( The Civil War , based on Lucan) and Togail na Tebe ( The Siege of Thebes , based on Statius), within the broader constellation of medieval Irish literature that references and engages with classical antiquity.Included are synchronistic poetry and world chronologies; lesser-known Irish poetry and prose recounting episodes from Graeco-Roman mythography and featuring, for instance, Jason and the Argonauts, Ulysses and Penelope, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, Daedalus and the Minotaur; linguistic and metaphysical tracts; place-name lore; and medieval historiographies of Alexander the Great, Hercules, and warriors of Irish legend recast as classical heroes. Creating access to this body of texts and revealing the marked influences of classical concepts on the imaginative resources of medieval Ireland fills a conspicuous lacuna in our knowledge of classical reception in European literatures. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the European Research Council, grant no. 818366.

Choral Identity and the Chorus of Elders in Greek Tragedy - U. S. Dhuga - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Choral Identity and the Chorus of Elders in Greek Tragedy - U. S. Dhuga - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Debate concerning the extent to which the tragic chorus is marginal to the dramatic action has prevailed in discussions of choral identity and, more broadly, Greek tragedy as a whole, since the time of Aristotle. Furthermore, it is supposed that choruses not tied to the role of Athenian military-age men are all the more marginal. Yet choral identity challenges our understanding of the ancient Greek tragic chorus—and thus of Greek tragedy as a whole—because the dramatic identities of tragic choruses are, with few exceptions, so different from the identities of the plays'' external audiences. Choral Identity and the Chorus of Elders in Greek Tragedy presents U.S. Dhuga''s radical reappraisal of the ancient Greek tragic chorus. Through a close reading of the speech, song, and choreography among choruses of old men, Dhuga overturns previous assumptions about the chorus of elders, arguing that their decrepitude and supposed low social rank resulted in the historically dismissive view of the chorus of elders. This book demonstrates that choruses of elders are instead remarkably central to the tragic action. Dhuga guides us through detailed yet readable analyses of the choruses in Sophocles'' Oedipus Coloneus and Antigone, Euripides'' Heraclidae and Hercules Furens, and Aeschylus'' Agamemnon. Through these works, Dhuga broadens our understanding of the ongoing, if not increasing, importance that the chorus commands in Greek tragedy. Choral Identity and the Chorus of Elders in Greek Tragedy is a must-read for anyone who wants a more complete understanding of the power and complexity of Greek tragedy.

The Comic Book Film Adaptation - Liam Burke - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

The Comic Book Film Adaptation - Liam Burke - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

"By far the most insightful look ever at superheroes in film. It''s not about what''s been translated from comics to the movies-it''s about why it has, how it has, and why it works well enough to produce some of the most popular movies in all of cinema history. There is no better, smarter examination of the relationship between comics and film." -Mark Waid, Eisner Award-winning writer of Kingdom Come and Daredevil"Liam Burke takes the reader on a compelling journey through this new ''Golden Age'' of adaptation, his argument combining the rigorous, exhaustive research of a committed scholar with the energy and encyclopedic knowledge of a passionate fan. This is a serious book about comic books and their relationship with cinema; it is seriously enjoyable, and also seriously important." -Will Brooker, author of Hunting the Dark Knight and editor of Cinema Journal"What is all too often an overlooked form is finally given the seriousness it deserves in The Comic Book Film Adaptation. A most welcome intervention in the field of adaptation studies." -Deborah Cartmell, coauthor of Screen Adaptation: Impure Cinema and coeditor of the journal Adaptation"Burke presents a masterly and engaging argument regarding cultural, technological, and industry transformations, which have facilitated a shift in the comic book form-on page and on screen-from the margins to the mainstream. This excellent book is sure to become a key text in the burgeoning field of comics studies, while also having a great deal to offer film and media studies." -Angela Ndalianis, editor of The Contemporary Comic Book Superhero and Super/Heroes: From Hercules to SupermanLiam Burke is a media studies lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology. His publications include the Pocket Essential Superhero Movies and the edited collection Fan Phenomena: Batman.

Plato's Caves - Rebecca Lemoine - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Plato's Caves - Rebecca Lemoine - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Months before the 2016 United States presidential election, universities across the country began reporting the appearance of white nationalist flyers featuring slogans like "Let''s Become Great Again" and "Protect Your Heritage" against the backdrop of white marble statues depicting figures such as Apollo and Hercules. Groups like Identity Evropa (which sponsored the flyers) oppose cultural diversity and quote classical thinkers such as Plato in support of their anti-immigration views. The traditional scholarly narrative of cultural diversity in classical Greek political thought often reinforces the perception of ancient thinkers as xenophobic, and this is particularly the case with interpretations of Plato. While scholars who study Plato reject the wholesale dismissal of his work, the vast majority tend to admit that his portrayal of foreigners is unsettling. From student protests over the teaching of canonical texts such as Plato''s Republic to the use of images of classical Greek statues in white supremacist propaganda, the world of the ancient Greeks is deeply implicated in a heated contemporary debate about identity and diversity. In Plato''s Caves, Rebecca LeMoine defends the bold thesis that Plato was a friend of cultural diversity, contrary to many contemporary perceptions. LeMoine shows that, across Plato''s dialogues, foreigners play a role similar to that of Socrates: liberating citizens from intellectual bondage. Through close readings of four Platonic dialogues--Republic, Menexenus, Laws, and Phaedrus--LeMoine recovers Plato''s unique insight into the promise, and risk, of cross-cultural engagement. Like the Socratic "gadfly" who stings the "horse" of Athens into wakefulness, foreigners can provoke citizens to self-reflection by exposing contradictions and confronting them with alternative ways of life. The painfulness of this experience explains why encounters with foreigners often give rise to tension and conflict. Yet, it also reveals why cultural diversity is an essential good. Simply put, exposure to cultural diversity helps us develop the intellectual humility we need to be good citizens and global neighbors. By illuminating Plato''s epistemological argument for cultural diversity, Plato''s Caves challenges readers to examine themselves and to reinvigorate their love of learning.

Physical Pain and Justice - Gary Rosenshield - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Physical Pain and Justice - Gary Rosenshield - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

It has been said that all great literature is about suffering. But before the twentieth century, physical pain, one of the most primal forms of human suffering, has rarely been represented on the stage and in fiction. But when it is foregrounded in works of literature, it is not only the most dramatic way of representing human suffering, it is also used to explore, in the most intense form, existential questions regarding the meaning of human existence and the justice of the universe. Perhaps it is not entirely coincidental, then, that imaginative works about physical pain, though few in number, figure prominently among the masterpieces of the western literary tradition. The best were written during two of the west''s most astonishing periods of literary creativity, fifth-century-BC Athens and nineteenth-century Russia, and by the most prominent artists of their time: Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, The Women of Trachis and Philoctetes by Sophocles; Notes from the House of the Dead by Dostoevsky; and The Death of Ivan Ilyich and War and Peace by Tolstoy. In all these works, physical pain is always portrayed as a dynamic process that includes the view point of the victim, the perpetrator (much of the physical pain is in the form of torture), and the onlooker or witness. In the Greek works, physical pain is the main vehicle for exposing the injustice of the gods and the world order, and in the Russian works for questioning the moral legitimacy of the state. In Prometheus Bound, Zeus delegitimizes his rule by torturing Prometheus for his service to mankind. In The Women of Trachis, the gods look indifferently upon the excruciating suffering of Hercules, the greatest Greek hero. In Philoctetes, the gods cruelly exploit the terrible pain of the hero as a means of winning victory at Troy for their Greek wards. In the Russian works, the mechanisms for inflicting the maximum amount of physical pain during corporal punishment undermine the moral foundations of the state and argue for its dissolution. Though the Greek and Russian works are separated by genre (plays vs novels) and by time (over two thousand years), they are united by the way they employ pain to investigate the justice—or rather injustice—of the world order.
