The Chomsky Update (RLE Linguistics A: General Linguistics) - Raphael Salkie - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Noam Chomsky has been described as ‘arguably the most important intellectual alive’. His revolutionary work in linguistics has aroused intense scholarly interest, while his trenchant critique of United States foreign policy and his incisive analysis of the role of intellectuals in modern society have made him a prominent public figure. Raphael Salkie’s timely book introduces the two parts of Chomsky’s work and explores the connections between them. He provides an accessible and up-to-date introduction to Chomsky’s linguistics, laying out his basic assumptions and aims – in particular, his consistent drive to make linguistics a science – and looking at a sample of Chomsky’s recent work. He examines the implications for other fields such as philosophy and psychology, as well as the main challenges to Chomsky’s position. Raphael Salkie also sets out the key themes in Chomsky’s political writings and his libertarian socialist views. He contrasts the ‘official line’ on US foreign policy – the view that the US is a ‘well-meaning, blundering giant’ – with Chomsky’s carefully argued alternative view. By focusing on Chomsky’s conception of human nature and human freedom the author draws out the links between the two sides of Chomsky’s work, in the belief that both sides raise issues which can profitably be explored. The author also provides a carefully annotated guide to further reading. As an experienced teacher of linguistics with a commitment to political activism, Raphael Salkie is uniquely qualified to present this introduction to one of the seminal thinkers of our time. First published in 1990.

Confronting Disaster - Raphael Sassower - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Contemporary society is rife with instability. Our active and invasive study of genetics has given life to one of the great specters of biological science: the clone. The scarcity of natural energy sources has led to an increased manipulation of atomic or nuclear energy and regressive environmental policies, resulting in a greater sense of danger for everyone. The promises of economic globalization have, in some cases, been delivered, but in many other ways globalization has created even greater gaps in social and economic life. Despite the expansion of our productive and technological capabilities, our workdays grow longer, not shorter. We find ourselves in exile from our families, our friends, and from other meaningful forms of social connection. And as "freedom" is bandied about in the popular press and media as the preeminent global social value, it actually seems that the reigning contemporary ethos of our time is stress and anxiety. While Raphael Sassower''s previous work has focused extensively on science and technology, this book is significantly different. It is an urgent commentary in the tradition of Herbert Marcuse''s One Dimensional Man or even Sigmund Freud''s Civilization and Its Discontents; a culmination of many years of research and thought carefully arranged into an extended essay on our contemporary social, cultural, and existential orientation in the modern world. This book is written for advanced graduate students, informed and concerned citizenry, and especially the young student who, in the face of mounting anxiety, must be able to make critical choices towards an uncertain future.

Les Amandiers Home - - Bog - Beta-Plus - Plusbog.dk

When Sonja, a Belgian interior decorator and Joel, Catalan and a master carpenter met, they were working on restoration projects for listed buildings in the Eastern Pyrenees. From this professional encounter, which augured a sentimental one, Les Amandiers was born. Their first showroom, on the road to Le Muy in 2007, transferred in 2010 to the entrance of Sainte-Maxime. During this time they envisioned, designed and developed a collection of beautiful indoor and outdoor furniture. Starting from high quality raw materials they conceive contemporary furniture in French oak for the interior and in Red cedar or Padouk for the outdoors. Following Joel’s long illness and death in May 2017, it marked the end of one era for Les Amandiers, but the beginning of another. Sonja, along with her team embarked on new projects including the purchase of a village house in Grimaud, and made it another showroom for the spirit of Les Amandiers Home. Les Amandiers Home offer a unique custom service from their workshops in Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Etienne. A team of 12 carpenters put their skills to work every day to carry out the various furniture orders made in France and abroad. It is in the purest tradition of ancestral craftsmanship that the workshop team works to produce a truly high quality collection. In their first monograph, Les Amandiers Home show an overview of their high-end projects in the Var countryside, in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, in the French Alps and abroad. Text in English and French.
