Masking America, 1918-1919 - Kerry Segrave - Bog - McFarland & Co Inc - Plusbog.dk

Masking America, 1918-1919 - Kerry Segrave - Bog - McFarland & Co Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book recalls masking efforts in response to the Spanish flu epidemic. Masking the population as an ineffective response to disease by public health officials and political bureaucrats at various levels of jurisdiction reached its zenith in 2020. However, it began a century earlier during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918-1919. In both cases, masking was not the first response made by the officials. In both cases, it was introduced as part of the second round of responses after the first round had failed. During 1918 the imposition of masking was done by legal mandate in some areas, by hectoring and whining on the part of officials in other areas, and by gentle and not so gentle public persuasion involving the use of "good" examples. Military members were mainly forced to don masks. Since there were bases, camps, and cantonments all over America as the war was ongoing, it was hoped an example would be set for the general public. Post office clerks who dealt with the public were often forced to wear masks; it was one of the few areas where the federal government had the power to impose masking. Some areas used masking almost not at all, such as the New England states. Other areas, such as the Pacific, forced masking on much of the population. Some public health officials did not subscribe to any of the imposed measures, such as Dr. Royal Copeland, the New York City Health Commissioner, and Dr. Rupert Blue, the United States Surgeon General.

Caught on Tape - Casey Ryan Kelly - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In a surveillance culture, the ubiquity of audio-visual recording devices has enabled the unprecedented documentation of private indiscretions, scandalous conversations, and obscene behaviors performed by both ordinary and high-profile people. From former President Donald J. Trump''s lewd banter on the infamous Access Hollywood video and leaked audio of celebrity racist tirades to outburst of violent hate speech posted daily to YouTube, contemporary media culture is awash in obscene performances of transgressive white masculinity. Such exposés are screened and viewed under the assumption that revealing secret prejudices will necessarily realize the promises of democracy and bring about a postracial and postfeminist future. This book addresses why the culture of public revelations has failed to hold the perpetrators accountable. Caught on Tape illustrates how public revelations constitute a symbolic and imaginary world for the public that is preoccupied with the obscene enjoyment of transgressive white masculinity: a compulsively repetitive experience of ecstatic and excessive pleasure-in-pain that arises from encounters with that which disturbs, traumatizes, and interrupts illusory notions of our coherent selves and reality. Caught on Tape argues that addressing race and gender inequality with the promise of scandalous hot mics and obscene private videos transforms antiracism and gender justice into disempowering forms of spectatorship that ultimately conceal the structural nature of whiteness, white supremacy, and patriarchy. The central argument of this book is that the spectators are the ones really caught on tape.

Playful Performers - David Binkley - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

African children develop aesthetic sensibilities at an early age, roughly from four to fourteen years. By the time they become full-fledged adolescents they may have had up to ten years experience with various art forms--masking, music, costuming, dancing, and performance. Aesthetic learning is vital to their maturation. The contributors to this volume argue that the idea that learning the aesthetics of a culture only occurs after maturity is false, as is the idea that children wearing masks is only play, and is not to be taken seriously. Playful Performers is a study of children''s masquerades in Africa. The contributors describe specific cases of young children''s masking in the areas of west, central, and southern Africa, which also happen to be the major areas of adult masquerading. The volume reveals the considerable creativity and ingenuity that children exhibit in preparing costumes, masks and musical instruments, and in playing music, dancing, singing, and acting. The book includes over 50 pages of black and white photographs, which illustrate and elaborate upon the authors'' main points. The editors describe general categories of children''s masquerades. In each of the three masking categories children''s relationships to their parents and other adults differ, from a close relationship to some independence to almost complete independence. No other major work has covered this aspect of African children at this age level. The book offers a challenging perspective on young children, seeing them as active agents in their own culture rather than passive recipients of culture as taught by parents and other elders. It will be interesting reading for anthropologists, art historians, educators, and African studies specialists alike.

Integrated Circuit Design - Xiaokun Yang - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Integrated Circuit Design - Xiaokun Yang - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This textbook seeks to foster a deep understanding of the field by introducing the industry integrated circuit (IC) design flow and offering tape-out or pseudo tape-out projects for hands-on practice, facilitating project-based learning (PBL) experiences. Integrated Circuit Design: IC Design Flow and Project-Based Learning aims to equip readers for entry-level roles as IC designers in the industry and as hardware design researchers in academia. The book commences with an overview of the industry IC design flow, with a primary focus on register-transfer level (RTL) design, the automation of simulation and verification, and system-on-chip (SoC) integration. To build connections between RTL design and physical hardware, FPGA (field-programmable gate array) synthesis and implementation is utilized to illustrate the hardware description and performance evaluation. The second objective of this book is to provide readers with practical, hands-on experience through tape-out or pseudo tape-out experiments, labs, and projects. These activities are centered on coding format, industry design rules (synthesizable Verilog designs, clock domain crossing, etc.), and commonly-used bus protocols (arbitration, handshaking, etc.), as well as established design methodologies for widely-adopted hardware components, including counters, timers, finite state machines (FSMs), I2C, single/dual-port and ping-pong buffers/register files, FIFOs, floating-point units (FPUs), numerical hardware (Fourier transform, matrix-matrix multiplication, etc.), direct memory access (DMA), image processing designs, neural networks, and more. The textbook caters to a diverse readership, including junior and senior undergraduate students, as well as graduate students pursuing degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and related fields. The target audience is expected to have a basic understanding of Boolean Algebra and Karnaugh Maps, as well as prior familiarity with digital logic components such as AND/OR gates, latches, and flip-flops. The book will also be useful for entry-level RTL designers and verification engineers who are embarking on their journey in application-specific IC (ASIC) and FPGA design industry.
