The KM Cookbook - Chris J. Collison - Bog - Facet Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The KM Cookbook serves up a menu of success stories and strategies for organizations wanting to know more about Knowledge Management Standard ISO30401 – whether they intend to pursue certification, or simply seek to use it as a framework to review their existing programme and strategy. The arrival of an internationally agreed standard and vocabulary, imbues fresh professional credibility to the field of Knowledge Management. Moving it on from a street food market of disparate approaches, it provides knowledge managers with a brand-new kitchen, and a moment during which they can pause and consider the service that they provide to their organisations. The KM Cookbook uses the metaphor of the restaurant, its cuisine, owner, chef, staff, ingredients, menu-planners, customers – and a restaurant critic, to serve up ISO 30401 on a plate for the readers. The second half of the book illustrates aspects of the standard by exploring sixteen different examples of KM in practice around the world, through the reflections of their own ‘KM chefs’. Case studies include: General Electric, World Bank, USAID, Schlumberger, PROCERGS, Médecins Sans Frontières, Transport for London, International Olympic Committee, TechnipFMC, Linklaters, Syngenta, Defence Science & Technology Laboratory, Financial Conduct Authority, Petroleum Development Oman, Saudi Aramco and MAPNA. This book will be invaluable for CKOs, CIOs, CEOs and knowledge and information managers seeking to gain professional recognition for their function and to review their approach within a new framework.

Reactionary Mathematics - Massimo Mazzotti - Bog - The University of Chicago Press - Plusbog.dk

A forgotten episode of mathematical resistance reveals the rise of modern mathematics and its cornerstone, mathematical purity, as political phenomena. The nineteenth century opened with a major shift in European mathematics, and in the Kingdom of Naples, this occurred earlier than elsewhere. Between 1790 and 1830 its leading scientific institutions rejected as untrustworthy the “very modern mathematics” of French analysis and in its place consolidated, legitimated, and put to work a different mathematical culture. The Neapolitan mathematical resistance was a complete reorientation of mathematical practice. Over the unrestricted manipulation and application of algebraic algorithms, Neapolitan mathematicians called for a return to Greek-style geometry and the preeminence of pure mathematics. For all their apparent backwardness, Massimo Mazzotti explains, they were arguing for what would become crucial features of modern mathematics: its voluntary restriction through a new kind of rigor and discipline, and the complete disconnection of mathematical truth from the empirical world—in other words, its purity. The Neapolitans, Mazzotti argues, were reacting to the widespread use of mathematical analysis in social and political arguments: theirs was a reactionary mathematics that aimed to technically refute the revolutionary mathematics of the Jacobins. During the Restoration, the expert groups in the service of the modern administrative state reaffirmed the role of pure mathematics as the foundation of a newly rigorous mathematics, which was now conceived as a neutral tool for modernization. What Mazzotti’s penetrating history shows us in vivid detail is that producing mathematical knowledge was equally about producing certain forms of social, political, and economic order.

The Labour of Spirit - Massimo Cacciari - Bog - Seagull Books London Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Labour of Spirit - Massimo Cacciari - Bog - Seagull Books London Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A provocative examination of the fate of autonomous, creative labor under capitalism. Between 1917 and 1919, Max Weber delivered two lectures titled Die geistige Arbeit als Beruf, which we might translate as The Labour of Spirit as Vocation. This weighty formula represented the hope that animated the world of bourgeois culture from the likes of Kant, Goethe, Schiller, Fichte, and Hegel and would later form the earliest threads of revolutionary thought from Feuerbach and Marx. The “labor of spirit” is creative, autonomous labor—human labor understood in its fully effectual power. To press for its realization is to liberate all activity from the condition of commanded or alienated work. But the dissolution of the labor of spirit into the capitalist form of production, into the universal machinism that swallows up that science which remains the true engine of development, also ends up delegitimating political authority, whose own foundation lies in the “promise of liberation.” Massimo Cacciari takes up old questions and confronts them anew: Is the “iron cage” fated to imprison that “labor of spirit” that is political praxis? Will the spirit of capitalism end up completely undermining the space of the political? Or are relations between science and politics still thinkable that might free us from our “debt” as we proceed without means or ends within the techno-economic system?

Medieval Public Justice - Massimo Vallerani - Bog - The Catholic University of America Press - Plusbog.dk

Medieval Public Justice - Massimo Vallerani - Bog - The Catholic University of America Press - Plusbog.dk

In a series of essays based on surviving documents of actual court practices from Perugia and Bologna, as well as laws, statutes, and theoretical works from the 12th and 13th centuries, Massimo Vallerani offers important historical insights into the establishment of a trial-based public justice system. Challenging the long-standing evolutionary paradigm of medieval legal procedures, Vallerani argues that public justice was not the triumph of strong inquisitorial procedure over weak accusatory procedure, but rather a process in which the two procedures developed in tandem. He demonstrates that inquisition and accusation shared many features in their intertwining goals of punishment and reconciliation. The grand narrative of the evolution of criminal justice is dismantled in this work, originally published in Italian and widely cited as a ground breaking study of legal procedure. Vallerani contends that accusatio and inquisitio were formed simultaneously to address different needs: to seek and construct different “truths”—the truth of the fact that occurred outside the courtroom as revealed by the probing of the judge, and the truth that emerges inside the triadic model of the courtroom as a result of negotiations between the disputing parties under the guidance of the judge. Vallerani’s rich approach to his sources includes statistical analysis of the court records, revealing the functioning of the courts in terms of the incidence of torture, the proportions of trials initiated by accusatio and inquisitio, and the percentage of trials suspended at different stages of litigation. Furthermore, he sets legal procedures within the context of a society and political world immersed in violence and conflict and shows how the supplica, or petition for pardon, played a major role in the transformation from communal to signorial government in the early fourteenth century.
