He goes on to criticize major recent attempts to develop non-universalist alternatives to skepticism, arguing that they rely on excessively abstract and philosophically indefensible preference satisfaction theories of the good.According to Philips''s positive alternative, moral standards are justified to the extent that they support reasonably valued ways of life. He devotes considerable attention to clarifying this idea and draws conclusions from it about the role and limits of reason in ethics. Philips''s theory provides us with a theoretical basis for dealing with actual moral controversies and for approaching questions of applied and professional ethics in a systematic way.

This book was originally published in 1832. Dr. James Philips Kay (later Sir James Kay Shuttleworth) studied medicine in Edinburgh and then began to practise in Manchester where he acquired a wide knowledge of working-class conditions and diseases. In 1831-2 he acted as secretary to the Manchester Board of Health which was set up to combat the threatened cholera epidemic, and it is thanks in part to the devoted labours of Kay and his colleagues that the epidemic in Manchester was less severe than in other cities. This vividly written pamphlet embodies the fruits of Kay Shuttleworth''s experiences in the capital of the cotton kingdom. He describes the newly set up Boards of Health investigatings into the state of Manchester''s poor, and enumerates the causes of their physical depression, with all its attendant moral degradation and predisposition to disease. As well as supplying statistics for pauperism, crime and mortality, Shuttleworth provides suggestions for improving working class conditions. This is the best known of all the literature produced about workers'' ocnditions in the early nineteenth century, and is a work which has been widely quoted and used by both economic and social historians.

These terms were often wielded in negative and gendered ways—to write soft or irregular verses was said to be a feminine fault, and to write strong or original ones a masculine virtue. In Sex and Style , Elizabeth Scott-Baumann argues that the language of poetry was always gendered, in ways that devalued women poets and feminine style; and that women, writing despite—and against—this sexist rhetoric, were important theorists of literature. Fiddled out of Reason is a study of several poems spanning the life and career of Joseph Addison, who, along with John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Ambrose Philips, Isaac Watts, and many British poets of the turn of the eighteenth century, helped to cultivate a broad new current of nonliturgical "hymnic" verse that became immensely popular across that century, though it has eluded critical notice until now. The texts the book examines—Addison''s St. Cecilia''s Day odes (1692, 1699), his libretto for the opera Rosamond (1707), and a sequence of five hymnic works in The Spectator (1712)—precede by twenty-five years John Wesley''s publication of the first hymnal for use in the Church of England. The book argues that "secular" hymnic works such as Addison''s emerged alongside religio-political controversies and anxieties about British national identity, morality, and expressions of "enthusiastic" passions. Church and Tory interests largely rejected hymnic verse, claiming it would only "fiddle" unwitting readers "out of their reason" and reignite the dangerous fervor of Revolution-era Nonconformity and Dissent. As is evident from his poetry, Addison, a moderate Whig, ardently opposed this view, arguing that the hymnic could in fact be a portal to national and individual amelioration. After an introductory chapter exploring period conceptions of hymnic poetry and the highly contested term "hymn" itself, the argument proceeds through three sections to trace the hymnic''s upward trajectory through Addison''s early, mid-period, and mature verse. The book devotes the lion''s share of its attention to the last of these three, which includes the five-poem Spectator sequence (a poem from the sequence, "The Spacious Firmament on High," will be familiar to many readers). Indeed, in addition to offering new readings of hymnic works by Dryden and Pope, Fiddled out of Reason provides the first extended critical treatment of these five important poems. Publication of the book coincides with the 300th anniversary of Addison''s death and with the appearance of a new Oxford edition of Addison''s nonperiodical writings.

The best predictor of disease outcome lies with correct diagnosis, which requires precise imaging and diagnostic procedures aided by prostate MRI. Urologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists all agree that multi-parametric prostate MRI is essential for evaluation of prostate cancer. However, the technical aspects of prostate MR imaging are not as straightforward as for the other imaging modalities and constantly evolving. Its small size presents a real challenge to the radiologist, who needs to do the T2 and diffusion weighted images and perform a dynamic contrast enhanced sequence correctly. These images may also need to be analyzed on an independent workstation. Due to the absence of a current reference manual, when a radiologist wants to establish a prostate imaging service, he/she needs to attend dedicated prostate MR workshops or dive into the literature search alone, only to get more confused about what to do and how to do it.
