Walk the Barrio - Cristina Rodriguez - Bog - University of Virginia Press - Plusbog.dk

Walk the Barrio - Cristina Rodriguez - Bog - University of Virginia Press - Plusbog.dk

To write about place you must experience place. In Walk the Barrio, Cristina Rodriguez enacts this premise by walking neighborhood streets, talking to immigrants, interviewing authors, and placing herself physically in the spaces that she seeks to understand. The word barrio is a commonplace not only of American speech but of our literary imagination. Indeed, what draws Rodriguez to the barrios of Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and others is the work of literature inspired by those neighborhoods. Walk the Barrio explores the ways in which authors William Archila, Richard Blanco, Angie Cruz, Junot Díaz, Salvador Plascencia, Héctor Tobar, and Helena María Viramontes use their U.S. hometowns as both setting and stylistic inspiration. A sking how these writers innovate upon or break the rules of genre to render in words an embodied experience of the barrio, Rodriguez considers, for example, how the spatial map of New Brunswick impacts the mobility of Díaz''s female characters, or how graffiti influences the aesthetics of Viramontes''s novels. By mapping each text''s fictional setting upon the actual spaces it references in what she calls "barriographies," Rodriguez reveals connections between place, narrative form, and migrancy. This first-person, interdisciplinary approach presents an innovative model for literary studies and sheds important light on the ways in which transnationalism transforms the culture of each Latinx barrio.

Robert Rodriguez - - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

"I can make a big-looking movie for very little money by just being resourceful, being creative, using the rubber band versus a lot of technology, and not being ashamed about it."Rogue filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (b. 1968) rocketed to fame with his ultra-low-budget film El Mariachi (1992). The Spanish-language action film, and the making-of book that accompanied it, were inspirational to filmmakers trying to work with meager resources. Rodriguez embodies the postmodern auteur, maintaining a firm control of his projects by not only writing and producing his films, but also editing, shooting, composing, as well as working with the visual effects. He was one of the first American filmmakers to adopt digital filmmaking, now the norm. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) helped bring back 3-D to mainstream theatres. He is as comfortable creating family films (the Spy Kids series) as action (Sin City) and horror films (Planet Terror). He has maintained his guerilla filmmaking approach, despite increasing budgets, choosing to work outside of Hollywood and even founding his own studio (Troublemaker Studios) in Austin, Texas. He has also arguably become the most successful Latino filmmaker. In this, the first book devoted to Rodriguez, interviews and articles from 1993 to 2010 reveal a filmmaker passionate about making films on his own terms. He addresses the subjects central to his life and work--guerilla filmmaking, the digital revolution, his family, and his disdain for Hollywood. An easy and frank subject, Rodriguez in these portraits is the rebel director at his most candid, forging a path for others to break free from Hollywood hegemony.Zachary Ingle, Lawrence, Kansas, is a Ph.D. student in film and media studies at the University of Kansas. His work has been published in Literature/Film Quarterly and Journal of American Culture.

Border Tunnels - Juan Llamas Rodriguez - Bog - University of Minnesota Press - Plusbog.dk

Border Tunnels - Juan Llamas Rodriguez - Bog - University of Minnesota Press - Plusbog.dk

A comparative media analysis of the representation of the U.S.–Mexico border Border tunnels at the U.S.–Mexico border are ubiquitous in news, movies, and television, yet, because they remain hidden and inaccessible, the public can encounter them only through media. Analyzing the technologies, institutional politics, narrative tropes, and aesthetic decisions that go into showing border tunnels across multiple forms of media, Juan Llamas-Rodriguez argues that we cannot properly address border issues without attending to—and fully understanding—the fraught relationship between their representation and reality. Llamas-Rodriguez reveals that every media text about border tunnels, whether meant for entertainment, cable news, video games, or speculative design, implicitly takes a position on the politics of the border. The examples laid out in Border Tunnels will teach readers how to look differently at the border as it is commonly presented in various forms of media, from ABC’s Nightline and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360º to reality TV, propaganda videos, and even digital effects in Hollywood action films. Llamas-Rodriguez examines how creative decisions in the production, promotion, and distribution of these media texts either emphasize or downplay issues such as border security, racial dynamics of migration, and sustainability of the borderlands. Focusing on tunnels to show how media representations can influence all kinds of audiences—even those physically near the border— Border Tunnels helps us make sense of this pressing social issue, ultimately advancing understanding of the U.S.–Mexico border in all of its complexity and precariousness.

Leibniz's Principle of Identity of Indiscernibles - Gonzalo Rodriguez Pereyra - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Gonzalo Rodriguez-Pereyra presents an original study of the place and role of the Identity of Indiscernibles in Leibniz''s philosophy. The Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles rules out numerically distinct but perfectly similar things; Leibniz derived it from more basic principles and used it to establish important philosophical theses. Rodriguez-Pereyra aims to establish what Leibniz meant by the Principle of Identity of Indiscernibles, what his arguments for and from it were, and to assess those arguments and Leibniz''s claims about the Principle of Identity of Indiscernibles. He argues that Leibniz had a very strong version of the principle, according to which no possibilia (whether or not they belong to the same possible world) are intrinsically perfectly similar, where this excludes things that differ in magnitude alone. The book discusses Leibniz''s arguments for the Identity of Indiscernibles in the Meditation on the Principle of the Individual, the Discourse on Metaphysics, Notationes Generales, Primary Truths, the letter to Casati of 1689, the correspondence with Clarke, as well as the use of the Identity of Indiscernibles in Leibniz''s arguments against the Cartesian conception of the material world, atoms, absolute space and time, the Lockean conception of the mind as a tabula rasa, and freedom of indifference. Rodriguez-Pereyra argues that the Identity of Indiscernibles was a central but inessential principle of Leibniz''s philosophy.

Y Tu Mama Tambien - Juan Llamas Rodriguez - Bog - McGill-Queen's University Press - Plusbog.dk

A classic of New Mexican Cinema, Y Tu Mamá También courted controversy with its explicit depictions of teenage sexuality and its forthright perspective on the country’s inequality. The cinematic sensation gained international accolades for its mixing of genres and film styles and inspired a wide body of writing from both critics and scholars. The multimedia lives of Y Tu Mamá También (especially in music, music videos, and social media) have kept the film relevant for audiences too young to have seen it when it debuted. Juan Llamas-Rodriguez revisits Y Tu Mamá También after more than two decades of social, industrial, and technological change to show how it astutely captures a particular moment in Mexican history and film production. The film was a turning point for Mexican stardom on the world stage, and the performances and celebrity of its stars, Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, reframed millennial Mexican masculinities. The eclectic and popular bilingual soundtrack is a focal point, read as engendering a queer listening and as an integral aspect of the film’s queering of time. Rather than being legibly classified as gay or bisexual, Y Tu Mamá También flouts sexual mores and national stereotypes and continues to spur new forms of longing and desire among audiences today. Moving beyond heavily debated questions of identity and representation, Llamas-Rodriguez explores the waves of reception, scholarship, celebrity culture, and social media content around Y Tu Mamá También that have shaped its queer legacy, and the circuits of influence that enliven global cinema across media and national borders.

The Focused Organization - Antonio Nieto Rodriguez - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

In The Focused Organization Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez shows you how fewer, more effectively elected and managed projects are the key to strategic and long-term success. Using his own research and work experience he explains how and why those organizations that focus on just a few key initiatives can perform significantly better than unfocused organizations, not only financially but also in achieving their strategic objectives and motivating their staff. The author introduces a new way of looking at a company through two very different and often conflicting dimensions: running-the-business and changing-the-business. What you add to one dimension you have to subtract from the other one. Finding the right balance between these two dimensions represents one of the major challenges to successful strategy execution. Becoming a focused organization involves a radical change in the way companies are organized and the way they select and manage projects - the creation of a new culture. The Focused Organization discusses the characteristics that comprise a focused organization. It describes key areas where a focused organization builds its levels of maturity; provides examples of focused organizations that outperform the rest; and explains in practical steps how all enterprises can become focused. The book finishes with a unique and inspiring case study that transports us to the early days of the current business world. Through the main character, Benny White, we learn how a business was conducted and how management evolved over decades with the introduction of business theories, including project management.

Drawing Deportation - Silvia Rodriguez Vega - Bog - New York University Press - Plusbog.dk

Illustrates how the children of immigrants use art to grapple with issues of citizenship, state violence, and belonging Young immigrant children often do not have the words to express how their lives are shaped by issues of immigration, legal status, and state-sanctioned violence. Yet they are able to communicate its effects on them using art. Based on ten years of work with immigrant children as young as six years old in Arizona and California— and featuring an analysis of three hundred drawings, theater performances, and family interviews—Silvia Rodriguez Vega provides accounts of children’s challenges with deportation and family separation during the Obama and Trump administrations. While much of the literature on immigrant children depicts them as passive, when viewed through this lens they appear as agents of their own stories. The volume provides key insights into how immigrant children in both states presented creative, out-of-the-box, powerful solutions to the dilemmas that anti-immigrant rhetoric and harsh immigration laws present. Through art, they demonstrated a righteous indignation against societal violence, dehumanization, and death as a tool for navigating a racist, anti-immigrant society. When children are the agents of their own stories, they can reimagine destructive situations in ways that adults sometimes cannot, offering us alternatives and hope for a better future. At once devastating and revelatory, Drawing Deportation provides a roadmap for how art can provide a safe and necessary space for vulnerable populations to assert their humanity in a world that would rather divest them of it.

Risk Analytics - Eduardo Rodriguez - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The 2022 World Economic Forum surveyed 1,000 experts and leaders who indicated their risk perception that the earth’s conditions for humans are a main concern in the next 10 years. This means environmental risks are a priority to study in a formal way. At the same time, innovation risks are present in theminds of leaders, newknowledge brings new risk, and the adaptation and adoption of risk knowledge is required to better understand the causes and effects can have on technological risks. These opportunities require not only adopting new ways of managing and controlling emerging processes for society and business, but also adapting organizations to changes and managing new risks. Risk Analytics: Data-Driven Decisions Under Uncertainty introduces a way to analyze and design a risk analytics system (RAS) that integrates multiple approaches to risk analytics to deal with diverse types of data and problems. A risk analytics system is a hybrid system where human and artificial intelligence interact with a data gathering and selection process that uses multiple sources to the delivery of guidelines to make decisions that include humans and machines. The RAS system is an integration of components, such as data architecture with diverse data, and a risk analytics process and modeling process to obtain knowledge and then determine actions through the new knowledge that was obtained. The use of data analytics is not only connected to risk modeling and its implementation, but also to the development of the actionable knowledge that can be represented by text in documents to define and share explicit knowledge and guidelines in the organization for strategy implementation. This book moves from a review of data to the concepts of a RAS. It reviews RAS system components required to support the creation of competitive advantage in organizations through risk analytics. Written for executives, analytics professionals, risk management professionals, strategy professionals, and postgraduate students, this book shows a way to implement the analytics process to develop a risk management practice that creates an adaptive competitive advantage under uncertainty.
