Practical Design of Timber Structures to Eurocode 5 - Vahik Enjily - Bog - Emerald Publishing Limited - Plusbog.dk

Written by leading experts in the field, including one of the authors of Eurocode 5, this practical book provides a comprehensive guide to the design of timber structures according to the latest European and UK standards. Practical Design of Timber Structures to Eurocode 5 begins with a description of timber, considering its strength, stiffness, moisture behaviour, rheology and durability, before going on to describe the production and relevant properties of materials used for timber structures. Readers will learn the theory behind the design of structural elements, such as beams, columns and walls, as well as how to ensure these structures conform to engineering design rules. All sections are illustrated by worked out practical examples. Key features: - Contains full design requirements according to Eurocode 5 - All sections are illustrated with worked examples - Links material specifications and European standards to Eurocode 5 - Comprehensive coverage of timber-related materials and their relevant properties - Covers design of beams, columns, panels, trussed structures, frames, arches, roofs, walls, floors and joints - Coverage of UK and European design standards and practices Relevant to practitioners as well as students at post and undergraduate level, Practical Design of Timber Structures to Eurocode 5 will equip readers with the necessary theory and practical skills to design any timber structure with confidence.

Transformational Plane Geometry - Zhigang Han - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Transformational Plane Geometry - Zhigang Han - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Designed for a one-semester course at the junior undergraduate level, Transformational Plane Geometry takes a hands-on, interactive approach to teaching plane geometry. The book is self-contained, defining basic concepts from linear and abstract algebra gradually as needed. The text adheres to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the Common Core State Standards Initiative Standards for Mathematical Practice . Future teachers will acquire the skills needed to effectively apply these standards in their classrooms. Following Felix Klein’s Erlangen Program , the book provides students in pure mathematics and students in teacher training programs with a concrete visual alternative to Euclid’s purely axiomatic approach to plane geometry. It enables geometrical visualization in three ways: - 1) Key concepts are motivated with exploratory activities using software specifically designed for performing geometrical constructions, such as Geometer’s Sketchpad . 1) Each concept is introduced synthetically (without coordinates) and analytically (with coordinates). 1) Exercises include numerous geometric constructions that use a reflecting instrument, such as a MIRA. - After reviewing the essential principles of classical Euclidean geometry, the book covers general transformations of the plane with particular attention to translations, rotations, reflections, stretches, and their compositions. The authors apply these transformations to study congruence, similarity, and symmetry of plane figures and to classify the isometries and similarities of the plane.

Non-Timber Forest Products - Rebecca J Mclain - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Non-Timber Forest Products - Rebecca J Mclain - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Balance the culture of wildcrafting with the demands of sustainable forest management! This comprehensive book addresses the issues that arise when the primeval practice of gathering wild plants, fungi, leaves, and bark occurs in a post-industrial world. Non-Timber Forest Products: Medicinal Herbs, Fungi, Edible Fruits and Nuts, and Other Natural Products from the Forest provides a unique analysis of the laws, sociocultural factors, competing political and economic interests, and environmental issues related to wildcrafting. The implications of harvesting non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are usually considered in the context of the Third World, but this unique book offers an analysis of current conditions in North America. Non-Timber Forest Products focuses on the forests of the Pacific Northwest and Upper Midwest. These areas offer a diverse array of commercially valuable forest products and fiercely contentious debates about environmental, sociocultural, and legal issues. Non-Timber Forest Products documents the core issues of this complex topic, including: - the special rights of indigenous peoples - consequences of increased demand for harvested products - stewardship of public and private forests - economic and public policy concerns - review of historical and contemporary wildcrafting - current research on economically useful forest products - sustainable development strategies - - sociopolitical and environmental considerations for NTFP management - Non-Timber Forest Products offers a clear picture of the historical, social, ecological, and policy aspects of NTFP use. It is an essential resource for private and public forest managers, environmental activists, economists, policymakers, and wildcrafters.

Africa, Tropical Timber, Turfs, and Trade - J. Henry Owusu - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

This book examines development issues, particularly spatial integration, in Sub-Saharan Africa regarding its tropical timber trade, and the related formal-informal operational turf creation, control and dynamics. Focusing primarily on Ghana, Owusu examines the scramble to control the timber trade by various political and socio-economic interests, from the colonial to the neo-liberal era. In relation to this, Owusu documents the structural and organizational changes that have occurred in the region resulting from national and international development policies, such as modernization and neo-liberal structural adjustment on industrialization and development, and assesses the roles played by powerful international organizations such as The World Bank as agents of economic change. The discussion is couched in the critical but often unrecognized or neglected role the discipline of geography and its associated perspectives play in relation to examining and understanding the unequal relationship between the advanced and developing economies, and how that relationship affects development and trade behavior of developing economies. The core argument made regarding this relationship is tied to the structuralist perspective that Africa’s persistent underdevelopment problem is rooted in the very structure of its political economy. Based on the discussion, Owusu identifies and distills lessons from Ghana’s experience for Development policy and practice in Africa and comparable Developing countries in the 21st Century.

Classical Analysis in the Complex Plane - Robert B. Burckel - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Classical Analysis in the Complex Plane - Robert B. Burckel - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

This authoritative text presents the classical theory of functions of a single complex variable in complete mathematical and historical detail. Requiring only minimal, undergraduate-level prerequisites, it covers the fundamental areas of the subject with depth, precision, and rigor. Standard and novel proofs are explored in unusual detail, and exercises – many with helpful hints – provide ample opportunities for practice and a deeper understanding of the material. In addition to the mathematical theory, the author also explores how key ideas in complex analysis have evolved over many centuries, allowing readers to acquire an extensive view of the subject’s development. Historical notes are incorporated throughout, and a bibliography containing more than 2,000 entries provides an exhaustive list of both important and overlooked works. Classical Analysis in the Complex Plane will be a definitive reference for both graduate students and experienced mathematicians alike, as well as an exemplary resource for anyone doing scholarly work in complex analysis. The author’s expansive knowledge of and passion for the material is evident on every page, as is his desire to impart a lasting appreciation for the subject. “I can honestly say that Robert Burckel’s book has profoundly influenced my view of the subject of complex analysis. It has given me a sense of the historical flow of ideas, and has acquainted me with byways and ancillary results that I never would have encountered in the ordinary course of my work. The care exercised in each of his proofs is a model of clarity in mathematical writing…Anyone in the field should have this book on [their bookshelves] as a resource and an inspiration.”- From the Foreword by Steven G. Krantz
