A highly anticipated biography of the enigmatic and popular Swedish painter. The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was 44 years old when she broke with the academic tradition in which she had been trained. While her naturalistic landscapes and botanicals were shown during her lifetime, her body of radical, abstract works never received the same attention. Today, it is widely accepted that af Klint produced the earliest abstract paintings by a trained European artist. But this is only part of her story. Not only was she a successful woman artist, but she was also an avowed clairvoyant and mystic. Like many of the artists at the turn of the twentieth century who developed some version of abstract painting, af Klint studied Theosophy, which holds that science, art, and religion are all reflections of an underlying life-form that can be harnessed through meditation, study, and experimentation. Well before Kandinsky, Mondrian and Malevich declared themselves the inventors of abstraction, af Klint was working in a non-representational mode, producing a powerful visual language that continues to speak to audiences today. The exhibition of her work in 2018 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City attracted more than 600,000 visitors, making it the most-attended show in the history of the museum/institution. Hilma af Klint was part of a group of female friends who called themselves ‘The Five’, which was active between 1896 and 1908. Together with Anna Cassel, Cornelia Cederberg, Sigrid Hedman, and Mathilda Nilsson, af Klint had been a member of the ‘Edelweiss Society’ – a group that combined Christian ideas, Theosophy, and Spiritualism. The Five received messages from higher spirits that they called the High Masters, and during their seances they documented the messages in trance-like states with automatic writing and drawing. There are 15 sketchbooks from this period, and Bokförlaget Stolpe are now making three of them (S2 HaK 1515, S6 HaK 1519 and S13 HaK 1526) available in a reproduction edition. HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 12 - a bookazine that is focused on colours. A bookazine that – like the previous 11 issues – is interested in people with skills, knowledge and passion. HÅNDVÆRK bookazine, based in Danmark, is published twice a year by designer, photographer and writer Rigetta Klint. Rigetta Klint about bookazine no. 12: ‘In many regards, my work with the bookazines is not dissimilar to the way furniture designer Thomas Woltmann approaches his work, as he describes it here: ‘I am convinced that the more local you can make your production, and the more we know about materials and the production of a given piece of furniture – or any other product, for that matter – the greater value it will hold for us, and the better we will look after it. My own practice unfolds at the intersection of this local outlook, historical knowledge and a modern design vision. That is the case whether I am working on art and communication projects, small-scale production in my own workshop or the design of items to be produced by a manufacturer.’ In the article Thomas speaks highly of his collaboration partners, including Thor Grabow, owner of the paint company Linolie & Pigment. Thor is portrayed in bookazine no. 4. I also speak highly of Thor. He has played a key role in raising awareness of the qualities of linseed oil paint. Perhaps not surprisingly, this applies to the renovation of historical buildings, but Linolie & Pigment has also become a valued partner for many artisans, designers and architects working on contemporary projects. Speaking of historical buildings, in this bookazine you can meet house painter Astrid Ellen Cramer Magnussen, who works with linseed oil paint, traditional Swedish rödfarg paint and buttermilk tempera. You can also meet architect Frants Frandsen of Realdania By & Byg for a talk about the renovation of a house on the island of Lolland with a carefully designed colour scheme.And apropos of colour design, the bookazine opens with a conversation with Margrethe Odgaard. For the past 20 years, she has been designing colours and colour palettes for companies in Denmark and abroad, held workshops about colours and maintained an independent practice as a textile artist with colour as her key focus. During our talk, she presents a brand-new colour tool. Margrethe trained as a textile designer, as did Astrid Skibsted, whom I visited in Aarhus, in part to hear about how she combines colours on her loom. Anne Sofie Slot Thybo also works with textile, using yarns that she dyes with plant-based dyestuffs. Plant-based dyeing is the main topic of the article ‘Alchemy’, where you can meet visual artist Cecilia Westerberg. She makes her own artists’ colours based in part on pigments extracted from plants grown in the Pigment Garden at the Rønnebæksholm art centre. Sara Gade, who is the main person in charge of the Pigment Garden says, ‘I would like to raise awareness of what artists have to offer. Often, artists seem to be assigned the role of mere entertainers. But we really need artists. Not least in relation to the climate issue and the biodiversity crisis and the sense of defeat many people feel, as we see the failure of the structures we have developed and struggle to imagine what to put in their place.’ ’

I min samtale med designer Birgitte Due Madsen introducerer hun sin materialebaserede arbejdsmetode, som hun kalder fra ‘fra unika til duplika’. Hun ser sig dermed tilbage og læner sig op ad en lang tradition, hvor kunstnere og kunsthåndværkere har vekslet mellem at udkomme med kunst og at have samarbejder med virksomheder, som har seriefremstillet deres designs. Han er i øvrigt i (sviger)familie med Rikke Salto, som du også kan møde, hun fortæller om sit arbejde med at skabe messehagler i samarbejde med Selskabet for Kirkelig Kunst.“Der er nogle få, det går rigtig godt for, men det er ikke nok at være en god kunstner, man skal også forstå branchens dynamik og være god til at omgås andre”, sådan konkluderer Søren Ellitsgaard. Han har siden 2003 stået bag Litografisk Atelier, som samarbejder med en lang række anerkendte samtidskunstnere om udgivelse af litografiske tryk.Desuden skal man, inden man vier sit liv til en kunstnerisk karriere, have en accept af, at man højst sandsynligt kommer til at leve med at have patchworkøkonomi. Fra Editors letter af Rigetta Klint: "Måske kunne du tænke dig at gå op i skala i et kommende nummer af HÅNDVÆRK"?, spurgte en tilhører, som er arkitekt, for nogle måneder siden, da jeg forelæste om mit arbejde med HÅNDVÆRK bookazine. Så godt i gang at jeg for længst havde forstået, at der er mange interesser på spil, når der bygges og restaureres, og jeg havde forstået, at det at beskæftige sig med arkitektur og bygningshåndværk handler om meget mere end at gå op i skala. Frem for alt er byggebranchen ‘big business’ og – i forhold til føromtalte og allestedsnærværende klimaregnskab – en af de store haner at skrue på. Hvor der er vilje, er der vej. Ikke kun i forhold til at begrænse CO2-belastningen. I mine interviews har vi talt om materialer i bred forstand, om æstetik, om arbejdsprocesser og arbejdslivserfaring og livserfaring og om uddannelse.
