Sand - Einat Yakir - Bog - Restless Books - Plusbog.dk

Sand - Einat Yakir - Bog - Restless Books - Plusbog.dk

The riveting English-language debut from celebrated Israeli author Einat Yakir, Sand tells the story of a family fleeing from a comfortless past into a promising present, but failing to strike roots in a ground that’s mostly made of sand. In clear and uncompromising prose, Sand dives in and out of the alternating viewpoints of a family who just arrived in Tel Aviv: a mother who rebuilds a business of coffee ground fortune telling, a son who backslides into petty crime, a daughter who pivots between the carelessness of childhood and the allures of being seen as a woman, and a man who takes on the role of a father for strangers in the street but never for his own children. Sharing only the space of that new, sand-dusted apartment on a bustling street, the family members lead lives that, while parallel, never fully intersect. Their communication is one of closed doors, of hung-up phone calls, and of a mother’s crumbling hope to escape the undercurrent of violence that made life in Ashdod impossible. Brusque and honest, Sand eddies around the greatest mystery of human interaction: the unknowability of another person’s mind. Its narration hovers on the edge of action, stares at the sleight of hand while the magic happens somewhere else. Pulling the reader into a maelstrom of a family’s inexplicable bad luck, it reflects life more honestly than most books: not knowing the reason for other people’s actions, they often seem cruel.

The Last Love of George Sand - Evelyne Bloch Dano - Bog - Skyhorse Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Last Love of George Sand - Evelyne Bloch Dano - Bog - Skyhorse Publishing - Plusbog.dk

George Sand is one the most celebrated writers and controversial personalities of nineteenth-century France; she is as famous for her bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. The Last Love of George Sand portrays the writer, political activist, and cultural figure as she starts a new chapter in her ever-surprising life: the mature years with her last lover, the young and talented engraver Alexandre Manceau. A turning point came for George Sand in 1849. After her political involvement in the revolution of 1848, Sand retreated to her country property, Nohant, with her son Maurice and started writing new plays. One day, Maurice introduced her to Alexandre Manceau, a young and shy artist thirteen years her junior. At forty-five, she was at the pinnacle of her career. She had a long history of tumultuous love affairs with famous artists such as Musset, Chopin, and Mérimée, but she had never experienced a peaceful and balanced relationship. With Manceau, Sand discovered that she could be loved, and fall in love herself, without drama. Their relationship would last fifteen years, and prove to be the most prolific period of Sand''s life, with fifty books published including the novels Elle et lui , inspired by her relationship with Musset, and Le dernier amour , written just ten days after Manceau died of tuberculosis. Although much has been written about George Sand, most of the previous biographies are focused on her more turbulent times. In The Last Love of George Sand , Evelyne Bloch-Dano looks back on Sand''s life from the vantage point of her years with Manceau.

Across the Sand - Hugh Howey - Bog - HarperCollins - Plusbog.dk

“Hugh’s imaginative worlds and tales within them never fail to entertain!” —Andy Weir, New York Times bestselling author of Project Hail Mary The first original novel from author Hugh Howey in six years, Across the Sand takes us back to the world of Sand , to a far future many generations after a disaster has destroyed civilization as we know it, where four siblings struggle to build their futures amid the harsh wastes of endless desert The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes, a land of howling wind and infernal sand. In this barren home, siblings Conner, Rob, Palmer and Violet daily carve out a future. They live in the shadow of their father and oldest sister, Vic, two of the greatest sand divers ever to comb the desert’s depths. But these branches of their family tree are long gone, disappeared into the wastes beyond, leaving the younger siblings scratching in the dust, hopeful for a better life. On the other side of No Man’s Land, Anya was born beside the abundant mines knowing her prospects would be to marry, have a family, and work in ore, in service to the Empire of the East. But when an atomic bomb delivered by a stranger destroys most of her town—murdering all her friends and community—she follows her father to a strange land of dunes to bring vengeance to their enemies. Two families collide across the sand, and nothing for a thousand dunes will ever be the same.

Skyggebiblioteket - Karsten Sand Iversen - Bog - Batzer & Co - Plusbog.dk

Skyggebiblioteket - Karsten Sand Iversen - Bog - Batzer & Co - Plusbog.dk
