The Ethics of Drone Design - Dylan Cawthorne - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book presents a holistic approach to the design and use of drones. It argues that this powerful technology requires high levels of ethical analysis and responsibility – our moral progress must keep pace with our technological progress. Drone technologies support and diminish the flourishing of certain human values, impact power relations between individuals and groups, and add an additional element to the complex network of humans and objects in modern society. The book begins by introducing four prototype drones designed and built by the author: the healthcare drone, the search and rescue drone, the educational drone, and the spiritual drone. These drones have been developed using a value-sensitive design approach – with values such as human welfare, privacy, trust, environmental sustainability, and justice at the forefront. Ethical analyses and social impacts are taken as design inputs, leading to the creation of better, more responsible drone designs. The book then showcases additional methods used to develop the prototype drones from the fields of engineering, ethics, and art, including ethical frameworks, ethics standards, capability caution, and speculative design. The holistic approach reveals a more subtle and nuanced view of drones than the currently polarized characterization of "the good drone" or "the killer drone". The book concludes with recommendations for drone engineers, companies, lawmakers, and citizens on how to support ethics in drone design. The Ethics of Drone Design is an essential resource for scholars, advanced students, engineers, and designers interested in the ethics of technology.

Legal and Ethical Implications of Drone Warfare - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Over the last decade, the U.S., UK Israel and other states have begun to use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for military operations and for targeted killings in places like Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. Worldwide, over 80 governments are developing their own drone programs, and even non-state actors such as the Islamic State have begun to experiment with drones. The speed of technological change and adaptation with drones is so rapid that it is outpacing the legal and ethical frameworks which govern the use of force. This volume brings together experts in law, ethics and political science to address how drone technology is slowly changing the rules and norms surrounding the use of force and enabling new, sometimes unprecedented, actions by states. It addresses some of the most crucial questions in the debate over drones today. Are drones a revolutionary form of technology that will transform warfare or is their effect merely hype? Can drone use on the battlefield be made wholly consistent with international law? How does drone technology begin to shift the norms governing the use of force? What new legal and ethical problems are presented by targeted killings outside of declared war zones? Should drones be considered a humane form of warfare? Finally, is it possible that drones could be a force for good in humanitarian disasters and peacekeeping missions in the near future? This book was previously published as a special issue of The International Journal of Human Rights .

Multimodal Learning toward Micro-Video Understanding - Meng Liu - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Multimodal Learning toward Micro-Video Understanding - Meng Liu - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Micro-videos, a new form of user-generated contents, have been spreading widely across various social platforms, such as Vine, Kuaishou, and Tik Tok. Different from traditional long videos, micro-videos are usually recorded by smart mobile devices at any place within a few seconds. Due to its brevity and low bandwidth cost, micro-videos are gaining increasing user enthusiasm. The blossoming of micro-videos opens the door to the possibility of many promising applications, ranging from network content caching to online advertising. Thus, it is highly desirable to develop an effective scheme for the high-order micro-video understanding. Micro-video understanding is, however, non-trivial due to the following challenges:(1) how to represent micro-videos that only convey one or few high-level themes or concepts; (2) how to utilize the hierarchical structure of the venue categories to guide the micro-video analysis; (3) how to alleviate the influence of low-quality caused by complex surrounding environments and the camera shake; (4) how to model the multimodal sequential data, {i.e.}, textual, acoustic, visual, and social modalities, to enhance the micro-video understanding; and (5) how to construct large-scale benchmark datasets for the analysis? These challenges have been largely unexplored to date. In this book, we focus on addressing the challenges presented above by proposing some state-of-the-art multimodal learning theories. To demonstrate the effectiveness of these models, we apply them to three practical tasks of micro-video understanding: popularity prediction, venue category estimation, and micro-video routing. Particularly, we first build three large-scale real-world micro-video datasets for these practical tasks. We then present a multimodal transductive learning framework for micro-video popularity prediction. Furthermore, we introduce several multimodal cooperative learning approaches and a multimodal transfer learning scheme for micro-video venue category estimation. Meanwhile, we develop a multimodal sequential learning approach for micro-video recommendation. Finally, we conclude the book and figure out the future research directions in multimodal learning toward micro-video understanding.

Micro Finance & Women - - Bog - New Century Publications - Plusbog.dk

Micro finance is a policy instrument to promote economic development, employment and growth through the support of micro entrepreneurs and small businesses. Micro finance is a movement whose objective is a world in which as many poor and near-poor households as possible have permanent access to an appropriate range of high quality financial services, including not just credit but also savings, insurance, and fund transfers. Many of those who promote micro finance believe that such access will help poor people get out of poverty. Several factors have led to increased interest in micro finance in promoting growth with gender equity. With the growing globalisation and liberalisation of the economy as well as increased privatisation of services, women as a whole have been left behind and not been able to partake in the fruits of success. Mainstreaming of women into the new and emerging areas of growth is imperative. This will require training and skill upgradation in emerging trades and encouraging more women to take up vocational training and employment in the booming sectors. Small enterprises are the best vehicle for stimulating entrepreneurial talent and participation of women in the development process. Small enterprises provide livelihood, check rural-urban migration, generate export earnings and touch upon the lives of the marginalised, disadvantaged and vulnerable women, in both urban and rural areas. The role of micro finance cannot be over emphasised in this context. This book contains 11 research papers, authored by experts in the field of finance, which provide empirical evidence of the role of micro finance in economically empowering women, particularly in rural areas.
