The Modern Japanese Garden - Stephen Mansfield - Bog - Thames & Hudson Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Modern Japanese Garden - Stephen Mansfield - Bog - Thames & Hudson Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The first ever survey of the evolution of the Japanese garden, dating from 1900 to the present day. A major survey and the first book of its kind, The Modern Japanese Garden is set to become the definitive book on the subject. Featuring gardens from Tokyo, Kyoto and Fujisawa to Osaka, Okayama, Fukuoka and beyond, this impressive overview includes major analysis of key works of interest through detailed garden profiles; insights into some of the most renowned Japanese garden designers across history; and a thoughtful exploration of the essential themes and developments in Japanese garden design. The Modern Japanese Garden investigates the relationship between nature and modernity. Roughly divided between pre- and post-1945 Japanese garden design, it examines post-war shifts in attitudes towards the contemporary garden as they move from status symbols and expressions of influence to spaces of healing and mediation. A short history of the Japanese garden, from pre-Shinto stone arrangements to the last years of the nineteenth century, sits alongside analysis of the contemporary gardens of Japan’s corporate buildings, museums, hotels and public spaces. Garden profiles offer a comprehensive overview of the most iconic and influential gardens in Japan, and include a mix of landscape- and smaller-scale gardens, many just recently completed. Interspersed throughout are short interludes, covering everything from the ancient garden of Ryoan-ji in Kyoto to the aesthetic lexicon of Japanese garden design, while essays from a number of high-profile contributors meditate on particular themes. Intended for both professional and general readers with an interest in landscape design and Japan's contemporary lifestyle, this is the definitive sourcebook on the subject.

Bunny Williams: Life in the Garden - Annie Schlechter - Bog - Rizzoli International Publications - Plusbog.dk

Bunny Williams: Life in the Garden - Annie Schlechter - Bog - Rizzoli International Publications - Plusbog.dk

A natural sequel to the seminal An Affair with a House , this is Bunny Williams’ most ambitious book to date. Inviting us into her impressive grounds with charming personal anecdotes, expert advice, and creative ideas for how to bring natural elements into the home, this is a testament to Bunny Williams’ love affair with the garden and woodlands surrounding her eighteenth-century manor house in Northwestern Connecticut.A popular stop on the Garden Conservancy circuit, Williams’ property boasts a parterre garden, year-round conservatory, extensive vegetable garden, orchard, woodlands, an aviary with exotic fowl, and a rustic poolside Greek Revival–style folly. Each section of the garden is accompanied by a directory of featured plants—from native ferns and succulents to a wide variety of flowering specimens.Stunning photographs—printed on two different specialty stocks—illustrate every aspect of the garden in different lights and seasons; during big parties and intimate gatherings. Throughout, the revered designer shows us how she incorporates nature in her interiors: in stunning floral arrangements, unique tablescapes, and elaborate holiday vignettes—where a rescued bird’s nest commands as much attention as a prized collector’s item. Whether in the intentional juxtaposition of high and low, or the considered placement of a garden bench to appreciate a particular view, home and garden together reflect the epitome of Bunny Williams’ inimitable style.

Place and Memory in the Singing Crane Garden - Vera Schwarcz - Bog - University of Pennsylvania Press - Plusbog.dk

Place and Memory in the Singing Crane Garden - Vera Schwarcz - Bog - University of Pennsylvania Press - Plusbog.dk

The Singing Crane Garden in northwest Beijing has a history dense with classical artistic vision, educational experimentation, political struggle, and tragic suffering. Built by the Manchu prince Mianyu in the mid-nineteenth century, the garden was intended to serve as a refuge from the clutter of daily life near the Forbidden City. In 1860, during the Anglo-French war in China, the garden was destroyed. One hundred years later, in the 1960s, the garden served as the "ox pens," where dissident university professors were imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. Peaceful Western involvement began in 1986, when ground was broken for the Arthur Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology. Completed in 1993, the museum and the Jillian Sackler Sculpture Garden stand on the same grounds today. In Place and Memory in the Singing Crane Garden , Vera Schwarcz gives voice to this richly layered corner of China''s cultural landscape. Drawing upon a range of sources from poetry to painting, Schwarcz retells the garden''s complex history in her own poetic and personal voice. In her exploration of cultural survival, trauma, memory, and place, she reveals how the garden becomes a vehicle for reflection about history and language.Encyclopedic in conception and artistic in execution, Place and Memory in the Singing Crane Garden is a powerful work that shows how memory and ruins can revive the spirit of individuals and cultures alike.
