The Road Movie Book - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Road Movie Book - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Road Movie Book is the first comprehensive study of an enduring but ever-changing Hollywood genre, its place in American culture, and its legacy to world cinema. The road and the cinema both flourished in the twentieth century, as technological advances brought motion pictures to a mass audience and the mass produced automobile opened up the road to the ordinary American. When Jean Baudrillard equated modern American culture with ''space, speed, cinema, technology'' he could just as easily have added that the road movie is its supreme emblem. The contributors explore how the road movie has confronted and represented issues of nationhood, sexuality, gender, class and race. They map the generic terrain of the road movie, trace its evolution on American television as well as on the big screen from the 1930s through the 1980s, and, finally, consider road movies that go off the road, departing from the US landscape or travelling on the margins of contemporary American culture. Movies discussed include: * Road classics such as It Happened One Night , The Grapes of Wrath , The Wizard of Oz and the Bob Hope-Bing Crosby Road to films * 1960''s reworkings of the road movie in Easy Rider and Bonnie and Clyde * Russ Meyer''s road movies: from Motorpsycho! to Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! * Contemporary hits such as Paris Texas, Rain Man, Natural Born Killers and Thelma and Louise * The road movie, Australian style, from Mad Max to the Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Roads are the main blood vessels of a city. Road Network and its standard indicate the status of a city. Road transportation is under stress due to increase both in population and in vehicles. Apathy shown towards road transportation system, lack of enforcement and improper road culture have resulted in a global epidemic called Road Traffic Injuries (RTI). Across the world, about 1.2 million people lose their lives and as many as 50 millions get injured annually in road crashes. Out of which, 85% of the deaths and 90% of the injuries occur in developing countries. This costs the developing countries about 1-3% of their GNP. An integrated, comprehensive and sustainable road safety management is essential. The government of -- a nation should take the initiative and co-ordinate with all stakeholders of the roads. The participants who can make valuable contributions, other than the government, are the non-Governmental organisation, private stakeholders, driving schools, vehicle manufacturers, medical fraternity, research organisations, media and the road users. Moreover, it requires technical and non-technical measures which have to be taken up simultaneously to curb this major disaster. The purpose of this book is to sensitise all to issue of road safety and to discuss the steps which need to be taken by the government and all stakeholders of the roads. This book is divided into three sections. Sections I discusses the causes responsible for road accidents like alcohol, human error, bad roads, defective vehicles etc. Section II talks about technical and, non-technical steps to curb this disaster, like Intelligent Traffic System (ITS), Road Safety Index, Emergency Medical Services and other tools. Section III consists of country experiences and cases like impact of Road Crashes on the Poor (Bangalore and Bangladesh); Road Safety: Issues and Initiatives in Bangladesh; Road Accident Reporting Computerised System in Thailand; Carriageway and Safety of Life in Nagpur City: Before and After Renovation of Roads and Driving Road Safety Forward (Shell initiatives in the Middle East).

An exciting and richly detailed new history of the Silk Road that tells how it became more important as a route for diplomacy than for trade The King’s Road offers a new interpretation of the history of the Silk Road, emphasizing its importance as a diplomatic route, rather than a commercial one. Tracing the arduous journeys of diplomatic envoys, Xin Wen presents a rich social history of long-distance travel that played out in deserts, post stations, palaces, and polo fields. The book tells the story of the everyday lives of diplomatic travelers on the Silk Road—what they ate and drank, the gifts they carried, and the animals that accompanied them—and how they navigated a complex web of geographic, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. It also describes the risks and dangers envoys faced along the way—from financial catastrophe to robbery and murder.Using documents unearthed from the famous Dunhuang “library cave” in Western China, The King’s Road paints a detailed picture of the intricate network of trans-Eurasian transportation and communication routes that was established between 850 and 1000 CE. By exploring the motivations of the kings who dispatched envoys along the Silk Road and describing the transformative social and economic effects of their journeys, the book reveals the inner workings of an interstate network distinct from the Sino-centric “tributary” system. In shifting the narrative of the Silk Road from the transport of commodities to the exchange of diplomatic gifts and personnel, The King’s Road puts the history of Eastern Eurasia in a new light.

Sustainable Road Infrastructure Project Implementation in Developing Countries - Wellington Didibhuku Thwala - Bog - Emerald Publishing Limited -

Sustainable Road Infrastructure Project Implementation in Developing Countries - Wellington Didibhuku Thwala - Bog - Emerald Publishing Limited -

Seven of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) are directly related to sustainable infrastructure development. The majority of sectors, including the road infrastructure sector, are under intense pressure to find financially feasible, socially acceptable, and environmentally conscientious project outcomes or techniques that will result in sustainable road infrastructure development (SRID). Sustainable Road Infrastructure Project Implementation in Developing Countries presents a model for implementing sustainable road infrastructure projects in developing countries. Providing readers with comprehensive theoretical and practical directions on implementing sustainable road infrastructure projects in developing countries successfully, the authors discuss the factors which influence the implementation of sustainable road infrastructure projects, including the drivers, barriers, benefits, and determinants of sustainable road project implementation. The model offers road infrastructure stakeholders with a precise and functional tool that promotes collaboration, common language and comprehension, engagement and interaction among all individuals and institutions involved in SRIP implementation. It is beneficial to both professionals and scholars, in the area of architecture; building technology; civil engineering; sustainable/green construction and other disciplines in the built industry.

Real-Time Road Profile Identification and Monitoring - Hong Wang - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Real-Time Road Profile Identification and Monitoring - Hong Wang - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Ever stringent vehicle safety legislation and consumer expectations inspire the improvement of vehicle dynamic performance, which result in a rising number of control strategies for vehicle dynamics that rely on driving conditions. Road profiles, as the primary excitation source of vehicle systems, play a critical role in vehicle dynamics and also in public transportation. Knowledge of precise road conditions can thus be of great assistance for vehicle companies and government departments to develop proper dynamic control algorithms, and to fix roads in a timely manner and at the minimum cost, respectively. As a result, developing easy-to-use and accurate road estimation methods are of great importance in terms of reducing the cost related to vehicles and road maintenance as well as improving passenger comfort and handling capacity. A few books have already been published on road profile modeling and the influence of road unevenness on vehicle response. However, there is still room to discuss road assessment methods based on vehicle response and how road conditions can be used to improve vehicle dynamics. In this book, we use several generalized vehicle models to demonstrate the concepts, methods, and applications of vehicle response-based road estimation algorithms. In addition, necessary tools, algorithms, and methods are illustrated, and the benefits of the road estimation algorithms are evaluated. Furthermore, several case studies of controllable suspension systems to improve vehicle vertical dynamics are presented.
