When contemporary Christians worship—be they Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or Pentecostal—they engage in a variety of ritual acts whose diversity and complexity may at first puzzle the observer. A closer look reveals that worship incorporates a limited number of major components that when repeated form the backbone of the ceremonies Christians enact when they meet on Sundays. This book focuses on six essential ritual forms: praise, prayer, sermon, sacrifice, sacrament, and spiritual ecstasy. Bernhard Lang argues that the meaning of Christian ritual is embodied in these six elementary forms, all of which have their roots in ancient, pre-Christian ritual life. Each has its own constituents, dynamics, meaning, and distinct story. Accordingly, the book is divided into six interpretative sections that, using sources in French, German, and English and contrasting past experience with the present, European with American, and Catholic with Protestant, explain the meaning of each. Lang uncovers their ancient biblical roots and follows their course through history with special emphasis on biblical, historic, and contemporary forms. This is a pioneering book and a major achievement: the first full-scale history and interpretation of a collective spiritual act fraught with meaning. Well illustrated, written in a readable style, and geared to the general reader as well as to students and scholars, it should become an indispensable addition to the broader study of Christianity.

Wes Lang; The Black Drawings - - Bog - HENI Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Wes Lang; The Black Drawings - - Bog - HENI Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Black Drawings: Works on Paper is an elegant catalogue published to accompany Wes Lang: The Black Drawings, one of two London exhibitions marking Wes Lang’s UK debut, opening on 27 September 2024 and running until 22 November 2024 at HENI Gallery. The exhibition showcases the complete series of The Black Drawings, created between 2022 and 2024, now on display for the first time. This book is dedicated entirely to Lang’s prolific output in drawing, featuring 96 works crafted using acrylic, crayon and pencil. As George Vasey notes, the drawings mark ‘a shift in the artist’s approach.’ The dark, otherworldly characters from his paintings — skeletons and disembodied skulls — remain, but now inhabit blank white spaces, intricately inscribed with playful expressions and phrases that echo Taoist philosophy, reflecting the spiritual foundations of Lang’s practice. More than just companions to his immense paintings, the drawings stand as a significant body of work, continuing to demonstrate the breadth of Lang’s influences — ranging from fine art icons such as Francis Bacon, James Ensor, Francisco Goya, and Alfred Munnings, to the kitsch imagery of his childhood. Lang effortlessly metabolises these disparate inspirations, creating a distinctive style that transcends mediums and expresses a deeply personal artistic voice that feels cohesive rather than fragmented or frenetic. Published in association with Newport Street Gallery, The Black Drawings catalogue presents more than 100 stunning reproductions, offering yet another intimate glimpse into the richness of Lang’s artistic mind and the world he has created for himself.

Northern Emporium Vol 2 - Søren M. Sindbæk - Bog - Jysk Arkaeologisk Selskab - Plusbog.dk

Northern Emporium Vol 2 - Søren M. Sindbæk - Bog - Jysk Arkaeologisk Selskab - Plusbog.dk

Early urban societies transformed social networks. This was also the case for Northern Europe’s emporia – maritime trading towns that emerged around the North and Baltic Seas in the first stages of the Viking Age. The surprising pace and scope of this change is rarely more evident than in the archaeology of Ribe, Denmark. This is the second and final volume presenting the results of the Northern Emporium research project and the high-definition excavations carried out within this programme in 2017-18 in Ribe. The 21 chapters survey the remarkable range of finds retrieved from this hub of the North Sea world in the eighth and ninth centuries AD: artefacts made from pottery, stone, shell, glass, metals, amber, leather, wood, textile, bone and antler. They offer detailed insights that highlight discoveries such as the assemblages from glass bead or comb-making workshops, and rare finds such as wooden furnishings and musical instruments. The focus of the book is on assembling Ribe’s early urban network. By analysing finds and their context, we develop a picture of social roles and interactions between residents and visitors in the emporium. And we follow the connections they created with other worlds as we trace the flows of glass vessels, pottery and wine barrels from Western Europe; iron, stone and animal products from North and Central Scandinavia and beads and coins that travelled from the Middle East and the Indian Ocean into northern Europe’s new maritime frontier.

Northern Emporium Vol 1 - Søren M. Sindbæk - Bog - Jysk Arkaeologisk Selskab - Plusbog.dk

In the early Middle Ages, a network of maritime trading towns – emporia – emerged along the northern coasts of Europe. These early urban sites are among archaeology’s most notable contributions to our knowledge of the period between the disintegration of the Western Roman Empire and the growth of a maritime-oriented world in the Viking Age. Ribe, on the western coast of Denmark, is one of these sites. In 2017-18 the Northern Emporium research project conducted seminal research excavations, which provided new foundations for the study of this nodal point between Western Europe, Scandinavia, and the world beyond. This first volume presents the results of these excavations and analyses to piece together the history of the emporium and its social fabric. The research employs novel, high-definition methods to explore the networks of the site, integrating an extensive use of geoarchaeology and 3D stratigraphic recording with intensive environmental sampling and artefact recovery, resulting in more than 100,000 artefact finds. The results transform our understanding of key points of the early history of the North Sea region. Through the remains of dwellings and workshops – the traces left by traders, sailors, weavers, tailors, comb makers, and skilled producers of glass beads and metal ornaments – we follow the creation of Viking Age social networks, along with some of the most iconic artistic products of this world and the daily lives of some of its notable inhabitants.
