Innovations in Mass Timber - Boyce Thompson - Bog - Schiffer Publishing Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A look at the environmental benefits and innovative uses of mass timber through 16 commercial projects in the U.S., Europe, and Australia Through architectural photography, technical diagrams, and expert prose, this book explores the environmental benefits as well as stylish and innovative uses of mass timber in commercial buildings. Prized for its ability to sequester carbon, mass timber, including cross-laminated timbers, glulam beams, and laminated veneer lumber, is entering a critical second phase of its development as a beneficial and stylish building material for nonresidential buildings. Join award-winning author Boyce Thompson on a global tour of 16 of the most innovative and stylish projects made with mass timber. Content highlights include: • Projects such as the intricate Swatch headquarters in Switzerland, the world''s tallest mass timber building in Milwaukee, WI, and a fairytale experience at the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Denmark • Sidebars on carbon sequestration, moisture control, and acoustic properties of mass timber • Information on how software and computer-controlled robotic saws work with wood’s malleability to revolutionize millwork • Details on how mass timber maximizes forest yields by utilizing small-diameter trees that might otherwise be wasted • The benefits of how quickly and more accurately mass timber buildings go together with less waste and less neighborhood noise Innovations in Mass Timber is an ideal book for anyone interested in design, green building, construction, and architecture.

Design of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures - Yves Weinand - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Design of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures outlines a new design methodology for digitally fabricated spatial timber plate structures, presented with examples from recent construction projects. It proposes an innovative and sustainable design methodology, algorithmic geometry processing, structural optimization, and digital fabrication; technology transfer and construction are formulated and widely discussed. The methodology relies on integral mechanical attachment whereby the connection between timber plates is established solely through geometric manipulation, without additional connectors, such as nails, screws, dowels, adhesives, or welding. The transdisciplinary design framework for spatial timber plate structures brings together digital architecture, computer science, and structural engineering, covering parametric modeling and architectural computational design, geometry exploration, the digital fabrication assembly of engineered timber panels, numerical simulations, mechanical characterization, design optimization, and performance improvement. The method is demonstrated through different prototypes, physical models, and three build examples, focusing specifically on the design of the timber-plate roof structure of 23 large span arches called the Annen Headquarters in Luxembourg. This is useful for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector and shows how new structural optimization processes can be reinvented through geometrical adaptions to control global and local geometries of complex structures. This text is ideal for structural engineering professionals and architects in both industry and academia, and construction companies.

Transformational Plane Geometry - Zhigang Han - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Transformational Plane Geometry - Zhigang Han - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Designed for a one-semester course at the junior undergraduate level, Transformational Plane Geometry takes a hands-on, interactive approach to teaching plane geometry. The book is self-contained, defining basic concepts from linear and abstract algebra gradually as needed. The text adheres to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the Common Core State Standards Initiative Standards for Mathematical Practice . Future teachers will acquire the skills needed to effectively apply these standards in their classrooms. Following Felix Klein’s Erlangen Program , the book provides students in pure mathematics and students in teacher training programs with a concrete visual alternative to Euclid’s purely axiomatic approach to plane geometry. It enables geometrical visualization in three ways: - 1) Key concepts are motivated with exploratory activities using software specifically designed for performing geometrical constructions, such as Geometer’s Sketchpad . 1) Each concept is introduced synthetically (without coordinates) and analytically (with coordinates). 1) Exercises include numerous geometric constructions that use a reflecting instrument, such as a MIRA. - After reviewing the essential principles of classical Euclidean geometry, the book covers general transformations of the plane with particular attention to translations, rotations, reflections, stretches, and their compositions. The authors apply these transformations to study congruence, similarity, and symmetry of plane figures and to classify the isometries and similarities of the plane.

Timber - Jane Lister - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Timber - Jane Lister - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Timber is a vital resource that is all around us. It is the house that shelters us, the furniture we relax in, the books we read, the paper we print, the disposable diapers for our babies, and the boxes that contain our cereal, detergent, and new appliances. The way we produce and consume timber, however, is changing. With international timber companies and big box discount retailers increasingly controlling through global commodity chains where and how much timber is traded, the world's remaining old-growth forests, particularly in the developing world, are under threat of disappearing - all for the price of a consumer bargain. This trailblazing book is the first to expose what's happening inside corporate commodity chains with conclusions that fundamentally challenge our understanding of how and why deforestation persists. Authors Peter Dauvergne and Jane Lister reveal how timber now moves through long and complex supply chains from the forests of the global South through the factories of emerging economies like China to the big box retail shelves of Europe and North America. Well-off consumers are getting unprecedented deals. But the social and environmental costs are extraordinarily high as corporations mine the world's poorest regions and most vulnerable ecosystems. The growing power of big retail within these commodity chains is further increasing South-North inequities and unsustainable global consumption. Yet, as this book's highly original analysis uncovers, it is also creating some intriguing opportunities to promote more responsible business practices and better global forest governance.
