Regimes of Derivation in Syntax and Morphology - Edwin Williams - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Regimes of Derivation in Syntax and Morphology - Edwin Williams - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Regimes of Derivation in Syntax and Morphology presents a theory of the architecture of the human linguistic system that differs from all current theories on four key points. First, the theory rests on a modular separation of word syntax from phrasal syntax, where word syntax corresponds roughly to what has been called derivational morphology. Second, morphosyntax (corresponding to what is traditionally called "inflectional morphology") is the immediate spellout of the syntactic merge operation, and so there is no separate morphosyntactic component. There is no LF (logical form) derived; that is, there is no structure which ''mirrors'' semantic interpretation ("LF"); instead, semantics interprets the derivation itself. And fourth, syntactic islands are derived purely as a consequence of the formal mechanics of syntactic derivation, and so there are no bounding nodes, no phases, no subjacency, and in fact no absolute islands. Lacking a morphosyntactic component and an LF representation are positive benefits as these provide temptations for theoretical mischief. The theory is a descendant of the author''s "Representation Theory" and so inherits its other benefits as well, including explanations for properties of reconstruction, remnant movement, improper movement, and scrambling/scope interactions, and the different embedding regimes for clauses and DPs. Syntactic islands are added to this list as special cases of improper movement.

Loudspeaker Handbook - John Eargle - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

The prospect of writing a book on loudspeakers is a daunting one, since only a multivolume encyclopedia could truly do justice to the subject. Authors writing about this subject have generally concentrated on their own areas of expertise, often covering their own specific topics in great detail. This book is no exception; the author''s background is largely in professional loudspeaker application and specification, and the emphasis in this book is on basic component design, operation, measurement, and system concepts. The book falls largely into two sections; the first (Chapters 1-9) emphasizing the building blocks of the art and the second (Chapters 10-16) emphasizing applications, measurements, and modeling. While a thorough understanding of the book requires a basic knowledge of complex algebra, much of it is understandable through referring to the graphics. Every attempt has been made to keep graphics clear and intuitive. Chapter 1 deals with the basic electro-mechano-acoustical chain between input to the loudspeaker and its useful output, with emphasis on the governing equations and equivalent circuits. Chapter 2 is a survey of cone and dome drivers, the stock-in-trade of the industry. They are discussed in terms of type, design, performance, and perfor mance limits. Chapter 3 deals with magnetics. Once a source of difficulty in loudspeaker design, magnetics today yields easily to modeling techniques. Chapter 4 discusses low-frequency (LF) system performance, primarily from the viewpoint of Thiele-Small parameters. We also discuss some of the multi chamber LF systems that became popular during the eighties.

Felicitous Underspecification - Jeffrey C. King - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Felicitous Underspecification - Jeffrey C. King - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Felicitous uses of contextually sensitive expressions generally have unique semantic values in context. For example, a felicitous use of the singular pronoun ''she'' generally has a single female as its unique semantic value in context. In the present work, Jeffrey C. King argues that contextually sensitive expressions have felicitous uses where they lack unique semantic values in context. He calls such uses instances of felicitous underspecification. In such cases, he says that the underspecified expression is associated with a range of candidate semantic values in context. King provides a rule for updating the Stalnakerian common ground when sentences containing felicitous underspecified expressions are uttered and accepted in a conversation. He also gives an account of the mechanism that associates the range of candidate semantic values in context with an underspecified expression. Sentences containing felicitous underspecified expressions can be embedded in various constructions. King considers the result of embedding such sentences under negation and verbs of propositional attitude. He also considers the question of why some uses of underspecified expressions are felicitous and others aren''t. This investigation yields the notion of a context being appropriate for a sentence (LF), where a context is appropriate for a sentence containing an underspecified expression if the sentence is felicitous in that context. Finally, he considers some difficulties that arise in virtue of the fact that pronouns and demonstratives have some sorts of implications of uniqueness that clash with their being underspecified.
