The Lively Science - Michael Agar - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Lively Science - Michael Agar - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Lively Science is Michael Agar''s accessible, idiosyncratic, often humorous, and sometimes controversial explication of his own polestar truth: " Research on humans in their social world by other humans is not a traditional science like the one created by Galileo and Newton ." However, if the social world is not a lab, neither is it a collection of random events. The book lays out a clear, straightforward path to carrying out the basic scientific tasks of forming questions and answering them to explore and account for that non-randomness. The author deploys myriad engaging examples drawn from a lifetime of applied and basic research to demonstrate how human science researchers can produce discoveries that are scientifically defensible and useful in the real world. Agar grounds his how-to guide in an approachable discussion of epistemology and draws on thinkers whose writings may be unfamiliar to many social scientists. He blends that work with new intellectual tools, such as complexity theory, disasters research, and conversational analysis. The result is an innovative and practical methodology that is true to the realities and surprises of research by and about humans, yet preserves scientific standards of falsifiability, empiricism, logic, and systematic presentation of results. This book represents the best of Michael Agar''s visionary work. With a new foreword by Michael Brown celebrating Agar''s enormous contribution to social science methodology, The Lively Science is for all researchers who seek to explore the full potential of a human social science.

Congo as Fiction - - Bog - Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag - Plusbog.dk

Congo as Fiction - - Bog - Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag - Plusbog.dk

A single Congo does not exist - or is in any case fictitious. Yet the Democratic Republic of Congo has an extraordinarily vibrant art scene that attracts great interest from around the world. Nowhere else in Africa art production is as manifold in form, media, and materials used. For many years, Congolese artists have been exploring and reflecting upon the effects of globalised trade, colonialism, proselytisation, and virtual boundaries. As the works of artists such as Sammy Baloji or Sinzo Aanza demonstrate, these effects never before were more topical than today. For the first time, this book, which is published in conjunction with an exhibition at Zurich''s Museum Rietberg, features objects and photographs collected by the German anthropologist Hans Himmelheber during his journey to the Congo in 1938-39. The coloured masks, imposing figures, and richly decorated everyday objects bear witness to the period''s extraordinary creativity and innovativeness as well as of the collector''s own idea of Congo. They are juxtaposed with works by contemporary Congolese artists and complemented by essays that investigate the fiction of Congo both as an African and Western World imagination. Thus, the book links the past with the utopia of contemporary artistic production in central Africa.Published to accompany the exhibition Congo as Fiction: Art Worlds Between Past and Present at Museum Rietberg, Zurich, between 22 November 2019 and 15 March 2020.

Postcards From Congo - - Bog - Arsenal Pulp Press - Plusbog.dk

Postcards From Congo - - Bog - Arsenal Pulp Press - Plusbog.dk

The Democratic Republic of Congo, the second-largest country in Africa by area, has a fractured and bloody history, variously undone by decades of colonialism, civil war, corruption, and totalitarian rule. The country has played a crucial role in the economic growth of the Global North, but in doing so, has suffered immensely. So many seminal advances in technology were possible only through the extraction of materials from Congo, from rubber to copper to uranium to coltan. In each case, the Congolese people paid a great price exacerbated by the weight of colonial exploitation and dictatorial rule. In this comprehensive graphic history, author and illustrator Edmund Trueman explores the fractious story of Congo. Through deft illustrations and storytelling, Congo''s history - not widely known to Western readers - comes vividly alive. We see how Congolese musicians have spread their language across Africa by creating some of the most popular music on the continent, and how Congolese women have spent decades sidestepping sexist legislation to become leaders in local business. From resistance against colonialism to the fight for independence and the self-determination to make a life in an almost stateless place, Postcards from Congo depicts how the Congolese people have resisted and survived in order to take control of their lives and the country they call home. Includes a foreword by historian Didier Gondola, Professor of African History and Africana Studies at Purdue University, Indianapolis.

Cold War in the Congo - Frank Villafana - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Cold War in the Congo - Frank Villafana - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

It is widely acknowledged that Congo became an East- West battlefield during the first half of the decade of the 1960s, yet the participation of Cuban exiles in the struggles is rarely noted. In this absorbing volume Villafana details the contribution made by Cuban exiles to the preservation of democracy in Congo. When Congo was given its independence by Belgium in 1960, most of its people believed their new government had been installed by the West and opposed it. Anti-colonial, anti-government Congolese patriots started fighting. Some were pro-communist, some anti-communist, and most didn''t know the difference. Many countries were involved on both sides of this conflict: Cuba, the Soviet Union, The People''s Republic of China, the United States (represented by military advisors, the CIA and Cuban exiles), Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, and several African nations. The Cold War made the involvement of some of these countries predictable, but not the Cuban involvement. Villafana explores reasons for Castro''s involvement in Congo. He considers whether Castro was operating with a master plan, of which Africa was a key. He discusses why Castro chose Che Guevara to head the ill-fated military expedition. He contemplates why the United States allowed Castro to freely export his revolution, and why it used Cuban exiles to prevent the mineral riches of Congo from falling into the hands of international communism. Villafana shows that CIA-sponsored Miami Cuban exiles were instrumental in thwarting Castro''s plans for Congo, which were believed to have included a confederacy with Tanzania and Congo (Brazzaville), to gain control of Central Africa and its vast resources.
