Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge - Hilma Af Klint - Bog - David Zwirner - Plusbog.dk

The first detailed survey of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint’s groundbreaking Tree of Knowledge series “Revelatory and sublime. . . . Her work remains conceptually open enough for viewers to draw their own conclusions, insert their own meaning and feel transported to other glorious worlds.” — The New York Times One of the most inventive artists of the twentieth century, af Klint was a pioneer of abstraction. Her first forays into nonobjective painting preceded the work of Kandinsky and Mondrian and radically mined the fields of science and religion. Deeply interested in spiritualism and philosophy, af Klint developed an iconography that explores esoteric concepts in metaphysics, as demonstrated in Tree of Knowledge . This rarely seen series of works on paper renders orbital, enigmatic forms, visual allegories of unification and separateness, darkness and light, beginning and end, life and death, and spirit and matter. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge at David Zwirner, New York, in 2021 and David Zwirner, London, in 2022, this book features a text by the art historian Susan Aberth examining af Klint’s spiritual and theosophical influences. With a conversation between curator Helen Molesworth and the US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo discussing connections between Tree of Knowledge and Native theories, the publication broadens the scope of philosophical interpretations of af Klint''s timeless work. Also included is a newly commissioned essay by the celebrated af Klint scholar Julia Voss, a contribution by the artist Suzan Frecon, and a text by art historian Max Rosenberg that further develops the conversation around why af Klint’s work was not recognized in its time.

Hilma af Klint''s daring abstractions exert a mystical magnetism When Swedish artist Hilma af Klint died in 1944 at the age of 81, she left behind more than 1,000 paintings and works on paper that she had kept largely private during her lifetime. Believing the world was not yet ready for her art, she stipulated that it should remain unseen for another 20 years. But only in recent decades has the public had a chance to reckon with af Klint''s radically abstract painting practice—one which predates the work of Vasily Kandinsky and other artists widely considered trailblazers of modernist abstraction. Her boldly colorful works, many of them large-scale, reflect an ambitious, spiritually informed attempt to chart an invisible, totalizing world order through a synthesis of natural and geometric forms, textual elements and esoteric symbolism. Accompanying the first major survey exhibition of the artist''s work in the United States, Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future represents her groundbreaking painting series while expanding recent scholarship to present the fullest picture yet of her life and art. Essays explore the social, intellectual and artistic context of af Klint''s 1906 break with figuration and her subsequent development, placing her in the context of Swedish modernism and folk art traditions, contemporary scientific discoveries, and spiritualist and occult movements. A roundtable discussion among contemporary artists, scholars and curators considers af Klint''s sources and relevance to art in the 21st century. The volume also delves into her unrealized plans for a spiral-shaped temple in which to display her art—a wish that finds a fortuitous answer in the Guggenheim Museum''s rotunda, the site of the exhibition. Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) is now regarded as a pioneer of abstract art. Though her paintings were not seen publicly until 1987, her work from the early 20th century predates the first purely abstract paintings by Kandinsky, Mondrian and Malevich.

A highly anticipated biography of the enigmatic and popular Swedish painter. The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was 44 years old when she broke with the academic tradition in which she had been trained. While her naturalistic landscapes and botanicals were shown during her lifetime, her body of radical, abstract works never received the same attention. Today, it is widely accepted that af Klint produced the earliest abstract paintings by a trained European artist. But this is only part of her story. Not only was she a successful woman artist, but she was also an avowed clairvoyant and mystic. Like many of the artists at the turn of the twentieth century who developed some version of abstract painting, af Klint studied Theosophy, which holds that science, art, and religion are all reflections of an underlying life-form that can be harnessed through meditation, study, and experimentation. Well before Kandinsky, Mondrian and Malevich declared themselves the inventors of abstraction, af Klint was working in a non-representational mode, producing a powerful visual language that continues to speak to audiences today. The exhibition of her work in 2018 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City attracted more than 600,000 visitors, making it the most-attended show in the history of the museum/institution. Despite her enormous popularity, there has not yet been a biography of af Klint-until now. Inspired by her first encounter with the artist's work in 2008, Julia Voss set out to learn Swedish and research af Klint's life-not only who the artist was but what drove and inspired her. The result is a fascinating biography of an artist who is as great as she is enigmatic.

Until We Knew - Elisabet O Klint - Bog - Eyewear Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Until We Knew is a poignant self-depiction of one woman''s dilemma in love and grief. The husband of Elisabet O Klint was not yet sixty when he was diagnosed with ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). This notebook, a retrospective diary, is about the year they fought against his illnesses and lived with this sorrow. In her autobiographical story, Klint allows us to accompany her through life as it happened, with the aid of notes jotted down retrospectively in her diary. Her words grip the reader as she brings to life the struggle that developed when her husband faced two life-threatening diseases with no cure. She hoped to be able to understand these illnesses and the suffering of her husband. More than that, she hopes the one who is facing a similar situation can get comforted and helped. "I felt supported by many but unnecessarily lonely too. My husband was not yet sixty when diagnosed with ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Both of which we knew nothing about before the slow and challenging path towards diagnoses. I dream that I am speaking for both of us and that we are listening together to the story that I am telling. I watch him smiling, laughing, and gesticulating to show his feelings. Could I have made him any happier, more comfortable, or more secure? Or was he happy perhaps, and even thankful deep inside that I was there for him the entire time? Which of his actions were really his own, and which resulted from his illnesses? I took care of him and the increasing needs as the diseases progressed. These are terminal illnesses with expected and unexpected developments. A day-to-day roller coaster. Each day full of emotions, some conflicting. A continues battle for someone who disappears. By sharing our story, I hope to contribute and raise awareness of FTD and ALS. I wish these pages can somehow educate. I''m convinced that certain areas in healthcare could improve by much with small changes. "
