Flow in Sports - Susan Jackson - Bog - Human Kinetics Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The experience of flow is still one of the least understood phenomena in sport. And yet it is one of the richest, most memorable experiences an athlete will ever know. Some call it a natural high. Others refer to it as being in a zone. Whatever it''s called, flow is an elusive and very sought-after psychological state that athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists have tried to understand, harness, and employ to their benefit since Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi first coined the term back in the early 1970s. Now, in the first book devoted exclusively to flow in sports, the pioneering legend Csikszentmihalyi and sport psychology researcher Susan Jackson attempt not only to explain the phenomenon but also to identify the key conditions associated with its occurrence. The book begins with a description of what flow is and is not. Flow is defined as a person''s total absorption into an activity. While it is always a peak, satisfying experience, it is not necessarily associated with peak performance on every occasion. Most of the book delves deeply into the key factors leading up to and accompanying the flow experience. The authors also recommend certain actions on the part of the athlete or coach to optimize the conditions in training and performance that allow flow to occur. The book is full of vivid examples, captivating quotes, and revealing research findings that enhance the authors'' clear and insightful text. The sport setting is rife with opportunities to experience flow-be it in pick-up games or the Olympics. But until now, flow has been an infrequent, accidental, and even mysterious phenomenon to most athletes. With Flow in Sports , this optimal experience becomes both more familiar and more achievable. Get to know flow, and get into it. Find out what you''ve been missing.

Flow - Mitchell (assistant Professor Of Music Theory Ohriner - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

From its dynamic start at dance parties in the South Bronx in the late 1970s, hip hop and rap music have exploded into a dominant style of popular music in the United States and a force for activism and expression all over the world. So, too, has scholarship on hip hop and rap music grown. Yet much of this scholarship, employing methods drawn from sociology and literature, leaves unaddressed the expressive musical choices made by hip hop artists. Fundamental among these choices is the rhythm of the rapping voice, termed "flow." Flow presents unique theoretical and analytical challenges. It is rhythmic in the same way other music is rhythmic, but also in the way speech and poetry are rhythmic. For the first time, Mitchell Ohriner''s Flow: The Rhythmic Voice in Rap Music reconciles approaches to key concepts of rhythm, such as meter, periodicity, patterning, and accent, treated independently across other branches of scholarship. Ohriner theorizes flow by weaving between the methods of computational music analysis and humanistic close reading. Through the analysis of large collections of verses and individual tracks, the book addresses theories of rhythm, meter, and groove in the unique ecology of rap music. In a series of case studies in the second half, the work of Eminem clarifies how flow can relate to text, the work of Black Thought of The Roots clarifies how flow can relate to other instrumental streams, and the work of Talib Kweli clarifies how flow can relate to rap''s persistent meter. While Ohriner focuses on rap music throughout the book, the methods he introduces will be useful for other musical genres that feature the voice freely interacting with a more rigid metric framework.

Flow at Work - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Flow can be defined as the experience of being fully engaged with the task at hand, unburdened by outside concerns or worries. Flow is an enjoyable state of effortless attention, complete absorption, and focussed energy. The pivotal role of flow in fostering good performance and high productivity led psychologists to study the features and outcomes of this experience in the workplace, in order to ascertain the impact of flow on individual and organizational well-being, and to identify strategies to increase the workers’ opportunities for flow in job tasks. This ground-breaking new collection is the first book to provide a comprehensive understanding of flow in the workplace that includes a contribution from the founding father of flow research, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. On a conceptual level, this book clarifies the features and structure of flow experience; and provides research-based evidence of how flow can be measured in the workplace on an empirical level, as well as exploring how it impacts on motivation, productivity, and well-being. By virtue of its rigorous but also practical approach, the book represents a useful tool for both scientists and practitioners. The collection addresses a number of key issues, including: - - Core components of how the idea of flow differs from experience in the work context - - - Organizational and task-related conditions fostering flow at work - - - How flow can be measured in the workplace - - - The organizational and personal implications of flow - - - The relationship between task features and flow opportunities at work - Featuring contributions from some of the most active researchers in the field, Flow at Work: Measurement and Implications is an important book in an emerging field of study. The concept of flow has enormous implications for organizations as well as the individual, and this volume will be of interest to all students and researchers in organizational/occupational psychology and positive psychology, as well as practitioners and consultants with an interest in employee motivation and well-being.

Compressible Flow - Nuggenhalli S. Nandagopal - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book focuses on the foundations of compressible flow, illustrating the use of principles of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics in the development of compressible flow equations. It presents the topics in an organized manner facilitating natural, logical flow of the subject matter. All the relevant equations are derived rigorously using basic mathematics and mass, momentum, and energy conservation principles; that is, continuity, momentum and energy equations. The applications of compressible flow equations are illustrated using numerous example and practice problems. The topics covered include Mach number, isentropic flow, stagnation-static relationships, compressible flow tables for air, compressible flow measurements, Pitot Tube, Pitot Static Tube, Rayleigh-Pitot Equation, compressible flow with area changes, sonic flow, sonic area, sonic relationships, shock waves, shock wave relationships, normal shock waves in nozzles, moving shock waves with applications to sudden opening and closing of valves, oblique shock waves and Prandtl-Meyer expansion waves, compressible flow through ducts and pipes, adiabatic compressible flow with friction loss, Fanno Flow, compressible flow with heat transfer, Rayleigh Flow, and isothermal compressible flow through pipelines. A unique feature of this book is that it presents novel methods to solve compressible flow problems through extensive use of spreadsheets. The spreadsheet-based solution methods presented in this book eliminates the need for cumbersome trial and error procedures and they can be used in solving a great variety of problems just by suitably changing the required inputs. This book also presents a ground-breaking, rigorous approach to solving gas flow problems in pipelines through the use of appropriate generalized compressibility factors and friction factors, dispelling the wide range of results that one can possibly obtain from approaches such as Weymouth and Panhandle equations. Includes 85+ Illustrative example problems and 40+ practice problems, both with detailed solutions (in both S I and US Customary units)Presents rigorous derivations of all relevant equations using fundamental mathematics and relevant physical principlesExplains concepts in an accessible and thorough manner with practical applications that readers can easily understandExtensive use of spreadsheets in solving compressible flow problems
