Three Songs was expertly composed by Nico Muhly . There is a two-note drone that sounds throughout this piece?s 15-minute duration. In the first part of the songs, the Tenor and the Violin exchange lyrical and declamatory statements. The second part is a song without words: a sort of dance for solo Violin. The third part has the Violin intoning a pair of notes while the tenor sings, in essence, a list. The work was commissioned by violinist Tatiana Berman on French surrealist poems of her choosing, and was premiered at the Constella Festival in Cincinnati in 2012.

Nico Muhly: Four Studies

Nico Muhly 's Four Studies for two Violins and Drone. ' Four Studies was written for Angela and Jennifer Chun in 2014. Each movement has a drone which lasts for the duration of the movement. The first bar of movements 1 and 4 can be quite long. The drone should remain loosely indifferent to the other part, avoiding any overly-dramatic commentary. That having been said, the droning player should feel free to subtly and constantly change the nature of the sound. Rests are meant to be played freely, expanding and contracting as the spirit moves the soloists, but the notes should be played in relatively even time. The genesis of those developments lies principally in the techniques popularized by the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers on their recordings that featured the use of the flat pick instead of a thumb pick, use of left hand embellishments including adjacent string drone usage, development of “hot licks” based on chromatic passing note sequences and syncopations, and the popularity of licks played on the higher pitched tenor guitar.

The slow movement is a very slow passacaglia, with, I hope, unexpected lyrical melodies in the violin. After an extended Organ toccata built over a drone, a brief slow movement creates a natural midpoint. The violin, aggressively plucking, builds up to form a canon with a clarinet, and after a loud outburst from the organ, the piece ends quietly. Moving Parts, written in 2012, is dedicated to Benjamin and the Los Angeles Dance Project.

For a piece with such a strong electronic component, 'It Goes Without Saying' is surprisingly organic. While the electronics include chillier, metallic noises—samples ranging from a kitchen whisk to a unique set of tiny bells—most prominent are the warm, woody sounds of a harmonium and of clicking clarinet-keys, sounds that share a certain sonic DNA with the live components of the performance.The piece also develops according to organic principles. Over the initial drone of the harmonium, the rhythm track and the clarinets build the material of the piece up from small, replicating cells into a lively and elaborate texture. The minutely wrought surface is stretched over the simplest possible formal contour, the drone undergirding the piece progressing from C to F and back again. When the slowly building dissonance of the underlying harmonium chord finally reaches its tipping point, the resolution corresponds to a dramatic timbral shock: a shocking burst of industrial noise, dominating rather than complementing its acoustic surroundings. Finally, the machine noises die away and the harmonies return home, the texture warms once again—now leavened by the gentle sound of the celesta. – Program Notes © 2007 Daniel Johnson Performance Notes: The clarinet should be placed in the center of the stage. Nico Muhly: Diacritical Marks (Score/Parts)

Diacritical Marks was written for the Chiara Quartet in 2011, and is in eight short movements. I have a huge anxiety about string quartets; they are normally meant to be giant expressions of a composer?s emotional life. Here, I focused on details: a tiny dot above a letter, a tiny swivel of the bow. The first and last movements are energetic and driving, and the middle movements are more lyrical, rhapsodic, and/or floating. The quartet is bound together by a piece of drone music, found in movements 3, 5, and 7, in which the second violin and the viola play an interlocking repeating pattern ad infinitum, while the cello and first violin spin very long, outrageous lines on top. From the pen of the composer of the ever-popular Miroir comes this attractive, 3½-minute transcription of a TGV, which was written for The Busy Drone, a beautiful mechanical dance organ now standing in Het Orgelpark, Amsterdam. The piece will delight audiences, yet the depiction of a train rushing on its journey places considerable demands on the performer as it proceeds through numerous keys and rhythmic combinations within the 5/4 metre. This is a real test of the player’s coordination given that there are up to five simultaneous but separate parts, including much rhythmically independent double pedalling. Although an instrument of three manuals and pedals is required, theregistration is delicate and colourful, not bombastic and overwhelming as the title might suggest. Suitable for advanced standard performers.

Duet No.1: Chorale Pointing Downwards is a work by contemporary composer Nico Muhly for Viola and Cello. The piece received its premiere at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York in February 2004. Muhly  himself writes of the work that it's the first in a series of short string pieces that serve simultaneous purposes as harmonic and technical studies for both composer and performers. Duet No.1  is constructed around a cycle of fourteen chords repeated almost without cessation. This drone-like cycle is subject to a few rhythmic alterations, as well as two interruptions, keeping things dynamic and exciting. The middle of the piece becomes, in Muhly 's words, "a sort of fervent perpetual-motion perseverance", in an attempt to combine harmonic beauty with what sounds like a musical exercise.
