A Walk in an Irish Garden : for Flute and Piano

This collection of songs were written and arranged for Sir James Galway as concert pieces by David Overton, his longtime arranger. They are all based to some extent on traditional Irish Melodies. The first three are contrasting tunes: “Spinning Song,” the beautiful slow melody “She moved through the fair,” and the more up-tempo “Star of the County Down.” These were so successful in the original flute and piano version, as printed here, that Overton was requested to write versions for strings and for orchestra, which were equally successful and have formed a regular part of Galway's concert repertoire. “Badinereelerie” is more light-hearted work, first written for Sir JamesGalway in 1984. Since then, he has played it countless times as printed here, and in a version for flute and orchestra. The surprising mixture of Bach (and Handel and others) with reels and Irish traditional tunes, and even a few English traditional tunes thrown in for good measure, has delighted audiences all over the world. The piece's rousing conclusion includes an optional switch to penny whistle, a practice that Galway writes, “I have always taken advantage of.”

The duet version of Fantasypiece for violoncello and double bass was composed in 2001, an arrangement for chamber orchestra was completed in 2002. The title has multiple meanings. The musical language, what I regard as free tonality, is one that I had always wanted to employ but never found occasion to use. By free, I mean employing unusual dissonances in a controlled manner within a tonal framework. The discourse of Fantasypiece involves the presentation of musical passages which set up a polemic between chromatically colored harmonies and tonal ones. The piece opens with a brooding theme featuring the tritone interval, followed by an interlude leading to a liricotheme. Chromatic, transposed variations on that interlude return throughout the piece to frustrate the attempts of increasingly tonal music to prevail over chromatically colored music. One even hears a cantando Neo-Classical sequence with running sixteenth notes a couple of times over the course of the work, as well as a set of ornate, Baroque-like variations on the lirico theme. Near the end of the piece, an extended recapitulation occurs which is utterly devoid of chromatically colored harmonies, making it seem as though that sort of music will prevail: a passionate, celebratory Tango ensues. All of this is to no avail for, in the end, the chromatic harmonies return and the piece ends on the ambiguous interval of the tritone with which it begins.

The story centres on the English princess Caroline Mathilde (1751-1775), sister of George III, who at the age of 15 was sent to Denmark to marry the 17-year-old eccentric and schizophrenic Danish King, Christian VII. The ballet portrays her unhappy marriage, the King's growing madness and her fatal love-affair with Struensee, the King's influential physician, which leads to their arrest, his execution and her exile, at the age of 20, separated from her two young children.This suite begins with the act's opening number: a boisterous, stamping dance to which the people rudely mock Queen Caroline Mathilde and her lover Struensee. After this comes a dark Adagio, The Conspiracy, in which the theme passes like persuasion from mouth to mouth, its variations suggesting the different attitudes of the conspirators, firmly controlled by the brass-driven gestures of the Queen Dowager. The conspiracy then works itself out at a court masked ball, from which the suite includes two dances: a gavotte, and a slow, lubricious passacaglia that is a pas de deux for Caroline Mathilde and Struensee. The Arrest comes with a gathering rush of music that envelops the King, the Queen and Struensee, leading to a vociferous climax in which they are held apart. In The Execution, slow white music for wordless female voices, harp and low strings is interrupted by pathetic, alienated outbursts from the King. The suite ends, as does the ballet, with a quiet adagio lament for clarinets and alto flute as the Queen goes into exile.Score. Duration c. 33mins.
