Holmboe's melodic writing is modelled upon the motivic and thematic developments that are highly characteristic of Haydn's melodic constructions, lending the work a timeless air.

Christian Lauba: Study No. 11, "Stan", for Baritone Saxophone and Prerecorded Synthesizer or Piano

Born in Tunisia in 1952, Christian Lauba has been a prominent contemporary composer, winning many prizes since his graduation from the Conservatory of Bordeaux during the mid-1980s. Lauba is particularly noted for his compositions for the Saxophone, such as Study No. 11 for Baritone Saxophone and Prerecorded Synthesizer and Piano. Premiered in 2002, Study No. 11, "Stan" was commissioned by Pierre Choffé for the Bordeaux Opera. The work is highly virtuosic and modern, including multiphonic Saxophone sounds and other advanced technical features. The score of Study No. 11 also comes accompanied with a CD of the Prerecorded Synthesizer part. With a typical performance lasting around eight minutes, this Lauba study, nicknamed "Stan" is described as a 'study in virtuosity for well-tempered and well-quantized instruments'. For all advanced Baritone saxophonists, Study No. 11 provides an alternative, modern work, essential to a varied repertoire.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Clarinet Trios B flat major op. 11 and E flat major op. 38 for Piano, Clarinet (or Violin) and Violoncello

Beethoven composed his Clarinet Trios op. 11 and 38 in 1798 and 1802/03. The op. 11 was given the nickname “Gassenhauer Trio” because its third movement is a set of variations on a theme from Joseph Weigl’s opera L’amor marinaro (“Gassenhauer” means a “popular song”). Playing with many possibilities in these nine variations, Beethoven sometimes lets the piano appear alone, and sometimes has it rest. In places the mood is that of a sort of funeral march, and there are harmonic and rhythmic surprises throughout. The op. 38 “Grand Trio”, the later of the two, was a reworking by Beethoven himself of his op. 20 Septet. He provided as also in the case of op. 11 an alternativeviolin part, in order to give the work broader distribution and thus greater popularity. The violin parts are likewise included with our Urtext edition, which just as back then- makes it doubly valuable.

Volume 23, the penultimate volume in Series II of the complete edition contains free arrangements by Liszt dating from between 1859 and 1861. The best-known among these are the three Verdi opera fantasias: the Miserere du Trovatore, Ernani and Rigoletto, together with the two Wagner transcriptions: the Spinnerlied aus Der fliegende Holländer and the Fantasiestück über Motive aus Rienzi. The volume also contains two transcriptions each from Berlioz and Lassen, and one each from Bach, Meyerbeer and Dietsch.
